I really appreciate this “rant”. I keep repeating (and I’ll keep shouting from the rooftops) that the Pelagos 39 is the modern iteration of what the Sub was initially intended to be: a mechanical “tool” watch that was, yes, expensive but attainable. As Rolex continues to market to higher echelons of “luxury” they are well aware that their sister brand is buttressing from the rear. That’s an understatement. It seems pretty obvious it’s coordinated. Watch them both continue to rise in price and you’ll see more evidence that Tudor is taking the baton from Rolex and continuing on its trajectory of making fine tool watches while the crown pushes into another stratosphere. I’m happy to own some neo-vintage pieces of Rolex’s because the new references just don’t resonate with me. There’s something so pleasing to be wearing a direct descendant of watches I love from decades ago. Something I keep saying is thoroughly modern that makes its own way. I also love the attention it gets from other enthusiasts. I’m happy to go without the flex on normal folks.
