Audemars Piguet X 1017 Alyx 9SM

I've never been the world's biggest AP fan, but these are just brutal, right? MVMT-style unmarked chronograph registers? 🤮

Good to hear I'm not alone. @IceCreamMan is in for one, though. ;-)

·

Compared to a watch I would wear, this is a mess. But I do like it much more than most Royals Oak. I mean it beats that bathroom floor tile dial.

·

Maybe you can’t afford to appreciate it, or is it that the rich have no taste? When I see a really expensive watch I think would I buy a watch that looked like that for 100 pounds. If the answer is no then it’s a terrible looking watch. And I wouldn’t buy that for 50 quid let alone 100😂

I can’t decide if I prefer the original or not:

Ugh it sucks so much.

·

I still prefer the Historiques 222! 🤷🏽‍♂️😜

·

I'd rather have leprosy than that AP.

'cuz it's not terrible? And maybe actually good? I'll bite! 😉

·

Well, ..., I mean, ... I can easily follow the concept of doing away the indices.

I wrote about the discussions and articles in journals and magazines in my teens and twens, why the «Alpha Male» should not wear watches at all or why «he» should at least not be a slave to the ticking beat by doing without indices. I have had my share of that body of thought in my youth.

So I can not condem or dislike this approach of AP. Indeed it feels like the perfect fallout of that past and thinking. A watch that states with every bit «I am the master, not the slave of time 💪.»

Yet, as a chronograph it is somehow contradicting the same idea 🤔. ... Or, just maybe, it is the absolute hight of this, because it displays the perfection of uselessness of time controllers 🤔.

Speaking of bathroom floors, the PRX looks like it was designed after a truck stop bathroom.

Missing indices are fine. Missing markers on the chronograph hours and minutes registers is not.

I’ll be the lone one to say I like it lol, idk why but I just like the industrial look

But I mean $72-110k? Yeahh, okay 👎

·

Homage to a Spaghetti Scametti.

·

Never have I seen a watch brand throw almost 150 years of heritage down the toilet just to beat Gerald Genta’s corpse into dust. Audemars Piguet are one of the most pathetic companies in existence.

·

For a split second, I thought a new Spaghetti Scameti just dropped.

·

This has got to be one of the funniest and worst watches ever produced by AP. Between this and the Marvel collabs they’ve produced… all I can say is wow. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

The Marvel editions are really impressive, I think they're designed to elicit a reaction and in that they succeed, now do I like the design? A cubic no. Can I pull off such a design on my wrist? Definitely not, I would melt like butter under the sun, I was diagnosed by my family general practitioner a long time ago (the physician basically), and according to his science, I'm acutely and clinically boring (I have come to terms with this fact of my life, I accept my fate). Can I afford any of these beauties? Neither. At least the new stuff is a bit toned down.

·

If you can't afford to buy one or two of these, AP doesn't care about your take on "heritage", or "holy trinity"...

It's a line of fashion watches for people who have "f#$k you" money.

You’re in good company as we are both fated to be extremely boring. Raise your plain black dial watch with pride! 😂

I am sure in terms of actual watch making and finishing the Marvel editions are impressive. However, I think the collab/partnership was odd to begin with. It screams of something Invicta would do and has done. And no offense to Invicta but that’s not the same company I’d prefer to share.

That said, I’d think we’d all be willing to look pass this if it simply out-executed Invicta by a fair margin and attempted something uniquely inspired with the design. Enter the Black Panther edition, where the best they could come up with is to put a literal Black Panther on the dial with the handset seemingly coming out of its crotch. If their goal was to elicit reactions on the spectrum of disappointment to eww, then they definitely succeeded.

I actually think the Black Panther edition could have been amazing - taking inspiration from the idea of Wakanda and celebrating the concept of afrofuturism that it represented. Oh well, these watches got more words from me than they deserve… imo, it’s just more toys for guys with more money than I can ever dream of. 😂

I think you've nailed their strategy. They really are doubling down hard on the new money aesthetic. I guess it's working for them. They don't even need to fire up the guiolloché lathe for this, so that makes life simple in the factory, but I bet the mark ups will be insane.

·

Honestly, I don't see the point.

·

All I’m seeing here is proof that money can’t buy class.

·

That’s hideous

·

I like it the watch, look very elegance, not the chrono. I dont like royal oak. I like formex essence 39 compare to royal oak

·

That looks just awful

·

After what they saw what happened with Omega and swatch they probably said let see if we can generate some hype and grab the attention of the younger generation. Hey man I’m not mad at them at the end of the day there a business and have to test the waters to continue to grow and survive. ✌️😉
