Water resistance?

Ok so a G-Shock has 20 atm water resistance. That's plenty to go swimming, and even diving it would seem (not that I plan to do so). What bugs me is that Casio tells us not to use the buttons under water in the manual. What's the point of being able to swim or dive with this watch if you can't even use the backlight under water to see the time or use the timer or stopwatch functions? Can someone enlighten me please?

The 200m WR is mostly about marketing, not practical use. The whole "thing" with G-Shocks is bragging rights about how super durable they are.

I'm sure Casio makes a version of the G-Shock that you can use the buttons underwater if it's actually a concern.

Caution of pressing the buttons underwater is common legal writing in most watches.

Even if water can get into the case, it will still work. It won't damage it. Salt water you might need to decontaminate the watch tho.

There are no shortage of hyrdo filled Casio watch to increase water resistants.

So don't worry about pressing the buttons on your g-shock underwater.

Still works after water got into case. Dw9052 used in the video. Cost $50 or less on Amazon.

Hydro filled watch. Theoretically unlimited water resistant because liquid can't be compressed. At least 1000 meter water resistant.

Yep. Nothing to get stressed over it. Life is better if you don't cling to things.

There are very few watches with pushers that can be operated under water. Most are very expensive.

The button caveat is common in most watches.

I’m not so sure about that. Hydro modding involves oil, and I’m not sure the electronics and battery would react the same way to water as to oil. It’s possible water won’t hurt a digital, but I’d like to see proof before I try it myself.

I’d say most people who are actually swimming with their watches will check the time go swimming and check it again when the are above water. Or that they will not be deep enough to not see it if they do glance at it underwater.

That will probably be my situation most of the time!

I was just snorkling in Hawaii on vacation and in my head I am much more agile in the water than I am in real life 😂 I’d love to learn to free dive or spear fish but I almost got a sea unrchin in my rear end snorkling jsut 30-40 ft off the coast

Hi there JP.

Hmmm do you REALLY need to see the light on a 5600 underwater?? Would you not just surface?

As I understand it, on the Frogmans, you can push the buttons underwater, but you almost need to re-mortgage the house to purchase one....

I don't think I ever will be in a position where I'll need to see the light on my watch in the water, except maybe in the swimming pool at night, but then again, I wouldn't check it underwater per say, just while the watch is wet. It was more a question about the incongruity of the specs vs the manual's recommendations. From what I gathered, it's not a problem to use the buttons underwater as they use a rubber gasket on the inside of the watch anyway.
