Mini photoshoot

I started to take photos (with a camera, not my phone) in May and I quite like it, but I pretty much only shot birds and other wildlife. Yesterday, I decided to try and take a few pictures of somes of my watches in a park near my home to practice my skills and have a bit of fun. There's still work to do on the technique and composition, but I did have fun and wanted to share my favorites with you!

Share yours in the comments as well, I love to see nice photos!

Looks good! You’re getting the watch sharply focused, which beginners often miss.

On the shots with deep backgrounds (pics 1-3), open your aperture a bit to blur some of that out. It’ll bring the watch out more and keep the eye from being distracted by what’s in the background.

I like that Timex.

Great start! Here’s 2 tips to bring those to the next level!

You can get a small reflector to light up your watches with the natural light. You can buy one on Amazon/eBay or make one with a white sheet of paper or some aluminum foil. Gold ones make a warmer light fyi!

If you want to remove reflections, you can get a polarizing filter. It’ll make them magically disappear and enhance the sky overall.

As others said, open up that aperture if you can! Those seem fine though. If you don’t have a fast lens, you can always use a longer one (zoom more) and keep your subject closer. It’ll blur the background more.

Thanks for the tip, I'll keep that in mind!

I love the Timex, it's rugged, super comfy, and halfway between a field watch and pilot's watch dial, it's just a shame the movement is on the cheap side, but you get what you pay for! Still a keeper anyway!

Great tips, thank you! I don't know if I can get a polarizing filter for my camera as it's a bridge, but I'll look into it, as well as a reflector!

what's your camera? 😄

here's a few reflectors on Amazon, I'd get the cheapest one on there: https://www.amazon.ca/s?k=photo+reflector

My camera is a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ300.

Great camera! It seems like it's just a normal screw-on 52mm sized lens. Any 52mm filter should fit on there. Get a circular polarizing filter if you can, it enables you to adjust the "strength" of the polarizing effect.

Here's a bunch of filters for it: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/accessories/Filters-for-the-Panasonic-DMC-FZ300/1162645-REG-48198?from=detail

Good entry point: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/56631-REG/Tiffen_52CP_52mm_Circular_Polarizing.html

Wow! Very nice shots! It's nice to meet another watch/coffee/photo enthusiast. That green Seiko on the last picture is quite something. Cheers! 🍻

Thank you! At the beginning, my average was 7-8 bad shots for every 1 acceptable shot. With constant practice, lots of trial and error, trying and noting all sorts of settings, I'm currently down to 2-3 not so good shots for every 1 nice shot.

Your shots are cool too. I like the cover photo of the Timex on a rock. Nice composition. You should join the Weekly Photo Challenge hosted by @Deeperblue. She posts the runners up every Sunday, including the guest judge for the coming week who decides the new theme.

Thanks, it's encouraging! I do follow the photography challenge, but haven't taken the time to participate yet. I definitely will, though!

Go for it! The themes are fun. They push me to creatively think of ways to compose the shot, and try new camera settings needed. Most of the time, I contribute shots. Sometimes, I don't. So, no pressure.

You're right! I do have some spare time this summer, I should take some to get creative!
