It's Not All Gloom For The MoonSwatch

I imagine a number of us were somewhat underwhelmed by the release of the MoonSwatch Mission To Moonshine Gold. I know I was.

However, on the plus side my old man has managed to snag the Mission To The Sun & Mars as presents for my Step Mother. Now they can match when they go out.

I think it's great as they match their personalities, My dad with his speedy professional showing his more pragmatic and "logical mind" whilst the bright colours highlighting the more energetic, approachablness of my Step-Mum.

They are fun watches, I enjoy my Jupiter quite a bit.

I am completely uninterested in the “MoonSwatch”. If you want a Swatch, buy one. If you want an Omega, but one. I have no interest in a plastic copy of an Omega.

·

On the upside you do get a 4 jewel ETA quartz movement.

·

I think that’s the point, not much interest in Swatch these days, so make a plastic, ahem.. bio ceramic copy of the iconic Speed-master and you get people waiting in line for a Swatch.

Swatches are fun, playful watches whose best days are far behind them. But they are the reason the Hayek family and the Swatch Group are the horologic behemoths they are today. So if they want to make a plastic, I mean bio ceramic copy of an iconic watch from a brand they own, who are we to criticize. To be honest I’d like to see a bio ceramic Fifty Fathoms or a Breguet Tradition.

Some of the hate for these is starting to look a bit like neckbearded gate-keeping.

Very nice, unfortunately I am still yet to get one but I do want to pick one up at some point.

I suppose not everyone has the money to buy an Omega, especially a Speedy with their recent price hikes. I think it is a cool thing tbh. I agree with @JP142470 be that the execution has been poor and back peddling on the online release was frustrating. But I do like the concept.

Swatch/Omega is just preying on people's FOMO. As I've said before, it has the capacity to churn out a bazillion of each flavour and put them all online for anyone, anywhere to buy. The right thing to do. But it won't do that because a key part of its marketing is the perceived scarcity of the items, amping up people's FOMO, and causing them to do stupid things to get one. Even putting aside what I think of these plastic toys (which isn't much, believe me), I wouldn't get involved based on the marketing tactics alone.

Personally I think that the legacy of the Omega Speedmaster's connection to the history of space exploration is unmatched in the world of personal timepieces and completely understand why it resonates with certain people. I am one of those folk, having been totally caught up in the Apollo Moon Missions as a child during the 60's & early 70's. So, if I could justify the lofty cost of a Speedmaster, I would, if I could ... maybe I'll purchase a lucky ticket! LOL!

All that said, I have nothing against the MoonSwatches and rather like the Moon, Mercury and Pluto versions. BUT, there is a couple of things that kinda bug me. One is the price; as a plastic watch, I just don't think they're worth the sticker. Two is this fake "exclusivity" engineered by the overall marketing strategy. They should be available at all Swatch retailers or readily available online IMHO.

I disagree. I see this as nothing more than a cynical cash grab by the Swatch group. They could produce more Speedmasters and lower the price but instead they chose to produce a cheap plastic copy and overcharge for that.

It is a cash grab as that is what all businesses do, they're there to make money. They don't care about you or I. That's a fact, and this latest iteration of the MoonSwatch was lazy I don't disagree.

However, I still think it's fun! The watch world is so snobby and elitists. But this was (supposed) to be open and at a price point open to basically all. The issue is that like all "hype" pieces the resellers came in droves. I also think it was stupid to not sell them online as a swatch boutique experience isn't the same as a luxury one. Additionally, I've been to Edinburgh, Rome, Warsaw, and Bangkok, but still unable to get one but I don't harbour any ill will to it. It's just like the other hype brands. But that's just my opinion 🤷🏻‍♂️ and like you say if you're not a fan you hit them where it hurts, in their wallets and don't purchase them.

I'd love one, but the flippers have ruined it. Online only is feeding these parasites 🤬 ...I'm an Omega fan ( SM300 & AT) but because of this am developing a hatred for Swatch and their exclusionary sales techniques.... London is a cesspool (ask any indigenous Brit) and I wouldn't go there if they were giving them away free. Damn shame , we loose out & the scumbag flippers win. Just stupid marketing

Did you see the Adrian Barker video of the Mission to Moonshine? Some lads bought the watch and then tried to sell it to others in the que!

I just hate the fact that the only shops in the UK are at different ends of the country! So I do get annoyed because I cba to go to London or Edinburgh to a swatch shop as the staff are sick of it all now. Therefore, it's not a fun experience. But I am down in London in April so I will try.

Good luck, post a pic if you get one 👍🏻

I'd be fine with it if it was sold for what its worth, but there are so many better choices than a plastic toy in that range.

My local Swatch shop has them all the time. The flippers come in every morning for the more popular colors. I could have one simply by showing up. But I could get a better Speedy homage in Steel and sapphire (Probably with a Seiko movement) from China for less money.

Yeah, I got a lightly used Lunar Pilot for £300 😉👍🏻
