GS Spring Drive

Can’t decide between the 3 Spring Drive beauties. Which one would you go for and why?

blue one with the leather strap. i think white dial with bracelet feel very bland. middle one is beautiful, but i dont like power reserve indicator on the dial

·

The left one in the pic.

And my why is a negative reason; that bloody power reserve indicator on the front that makes everything asymmetrical.

·

The white birch spring drive is what I would choose (which is what I think is in that photo). It's a more prestigious model than the other two and better wrist feel. The Winter is titanium and I don't like how it feels on the wrist nor do I like the muted tones of the watch. The skyflake is awesome, but I prefer my watches on bracelets as I can always put a strap on it. With the skyflake, the opposite isn't possible that I know of.

·

The middle because I don’t have that dial color.

·

There is no perfect watch I guess. Out of the three, I like the dial in the middle one the most. It also has the best case shape with bezel-less design. But I don’t like the color of titanium and the power indicator.

The white birch feels a lot more substantial because of its steel case. But the silver dial is too blingy. interesting, the dial of white birch spring drive is more muted compared to its hi-beat counterpart.

the sky flake feels dressier than the other 2. But I hate how the power indicator has a darker blue background than than the rest of the dial.

perhaps I should just wait? 🤷🏻‍♂️

That’s one of the biggest reasons I prefer the grey dial

Usually when I’m torn between which watches to buy, I usually buy all of them but!! I have matured in the recent weeks 😆…I now just walk away and think about it more and if a day or two passes then approach again and which one really hits me like ”oh man!! Def. this one!” But if still can’t decide walk away again… we’ll that’s the plan anyways… listen to your ”Inner flex!!” 😵‍💫😉

If you’re not sure: wait! Just let it rest for now and one morning you wake up and know what to do. Give your subconscious a chance to do the ‘thinking’. It’s way more powerful than your cognitive skills which can’t help you in making this decision. Just sleep over it!

·

Depends what you already have in your collection.    The white birch and 415 can work as an everyday with the 100m water.   The 007 Omiwatri, I prefer the smaller case size but it's a dressier piece with less water resistance.

Also, comparing the White Birch and the 415 winter ... might be better to say would you rather have the white birch or for example, the 415 as well as a black bay 58.

Ignoring price and in isolation that this would be my one and only everyday ... White Birch spring drive.

I agree and I am glad I let myself walk away after trying them on

here’s what I currently have. I want to look for something that is different from what I already have.

The middle one -- I prefer bracelets, but the links on the one on the left are too wide for the case.  The blue dial is nice but not on a bracelet.  The middle one is the Goldilocks of the group, but the blue dial is my favorite colorway of the three.

·

No wrong choice but I'd go with the blue dial. Looks different but stays versatile

·

All 3 are fantastic, but totally different watches.

  1.  SLGA009:  Pros - a) Evolution 9 case design is incredibly comfortable on wrist, b) 5-day power reserve, if PR is important to you
  2.  SBGA415:  Pros - a) Titanium, if you like titanium, b) power meter on dial, if you like power meter on dial - which I do
  3.  SBGA407:  Pros - a) Stainless steel, if you prefer SS to titanium, b) power meter on dial, if you like power meter on dial - which I do

I say roll a die!

GS is known for all the angles, so one of the two on the left it is for me.

·

Middle . winter dial 👌

You can and it looks great!  I got my bracelet for my Skyflake from my AD.

·

I’m biased as my first luxury purchase was the SBGA407.  But I also think it is super versatile and just down right beautiful.  See the evidence below:

Look good on metal, leather, and suede!!

For me it would be the SLGA009 all the way for the amazing 5 day thermo compensated Spring Drive. I prefer the 009’s case and bracelet to that of the SBGA415 as well but that’s just personal preference.

Oh nice! How much is the bracelet? What does the clasp look like?

you’ve come up with 3 great choices for your next purchase! In my experience when i got the Winter, i thought i’ll regret it when I finally get to try the White Birch.. but i was more satisfied with my decision to pursue the Winter after comparing both side by side.

the WB felt abit too big with the 22mm bracelet design. i feel this is due to the fact it has rectangular mid-links instead of the squarish design of the Winter. I Even felt my tudor fxd wore smaller too Because of this.

Image

I also felt the head was too small for its bracelet so eventually i feel that most of the evolution 9 series designs felt weird for my 6.5 inch wrist. Of course YMMV.

for the skyflake, i feel that there are more better designs in blue within the brand and outside of it. Take the SBGH297 Ginza for example Or you can consider Chopard’s Alpine Eagle within the same price range as the WB.

of course if you would like a watch with provenance, i’d go for the original hi beat WB which won the GPHG award instead of the spring drive Version. Its is also more sparklier, which I like and you may not.

the power reserve, imo, is the best complication on a watch. It tells the user when to wind or Not, preventing unnecessary disturbance of the movement. the design of the PR is well done on the winter. its even more better in the spring drive WB. but if you were looking towards a sportier design, PR on dial makes it so, plus it makes sense on such a muted design on the Winter

lume? Don’t need it. I sleep with blackout curtains and with a flick of a wrist, the hands and indices sparkle to let me know the time. Of course not as easy as watches with Lume, but its still able to let you know the time in night time settings

As per everyone, you’ve made a few great choices for yourself and won’t do any wrong. So good luck and have fun. Hope you report back with your NWA :)

It was $600 from my AD. It’s the standard GS bracelet.

If you aren't sure, just wait. GS will release more models.

It’s an awesome timepiece. I highly recommend it for sure.

For me, the SBGA415. I have the SBGA413, which is my ultimate everyday almost-beater watch. I'm not keen on the Spring Drive White Birch. The dial on the mechanical one is bolder and sharper, more attractive to my eye, and at that price I would want the dual impulse escapement. Spring Drive with more power reserve is less exciting. I'm also not excited by the Skyflake. To my surprise, I was frankly underwhelmed by the Snowflake, and making it blue didn't make it more exciting. Also, for me a leather strap is less versatile; you have to worry about getting it wet.

·

I'd choose the SBGA415 Winter from those three.

The bezel-less 62GS case is the best case GS makes. The titanium wears like a dream. And this combination of handset and power reserve is quintessential Grand Seiko, even though I know it's not for everyone. But it is distinctive, and not something you'll find from another brand.

I have the similar SBGA413 Spring, and I love it.

Nice dial! The power meter is not as prominent on this one vs Sky flake. Also love the touch of gold on the GS logo.

Admittedly Springs are among the best watches on the planet but they simply do speak to me compared to the more rugged iconic offerings for eg. The Willard reissue SBP151 and 1965 62MAS SPB143J1. Although they have inferior finishing and calibres, the excite me as a watch lover more than the GS offering’s
