Tools of Your Trade

Whichever trade you are engaged in, you definitely have a shortlist of tools that you'll need to have to get things done, be productive, and to succeed.

As a business man, I definitely need a calendar, a notebook of some kind, a smooth 0.5 gel pen or fountain pen, and a laptop.

Image

I also need a number of suits, long-sleeved shirts, ties, and dress shoes. I definitely need a mobile phone, a car to get around... and coffee. 😉

As watch enthusiasts, I'm guessing that when we practice our trade, we also select a watch that will most suit the type of work we do. For my various business meetings, startup consultations, and management consulting engagements, I wear any of these watches, whichever will help me best achieve a specific objective, and is the most appropriate to the situation/ occasion.

Trial notes (not exactly "the Trial of the Century").

I've worked in a STEM field for the past 42+ years; consulting engineering. The main tools of my trade now-a-days are a desktop PC ... used to be an actual drafting board (c/w T-square!) and a pocket calculator back in my early career LOL!!

Work attire is casual (jeans, sweater, button-up or tee), so I rotate whatever watch from my collection I'm in the mood for on any given day. Do wear one of my two beaters if I have to visit a job site though ...

Retired 6 years ago.

All I need now is coffee and beer to get the job done.

My tools of the trade consist of patience, apathy and a pc with a good internet connection.

I mostly wear boring beaters at work. I'm sure those looking through WRUW will see the same two watches daily.

But once in a while, I will use this for R&D and advertising.

As for the watch, it depends on the day.

For my job, a watch is not a necessity just something I like to wear. I mainly need a computer, listening ears, and my brain to help problem solve issues varying from behavioral health concerns to anything else my patients may bring to my attention.

Keep it steady, Counselor. 👍

My tools are all virtual, and so is my working environment. It's all in a virtual desktop session, largely for security reasons. I don't take physical notes, as I would have to secure/destroy them. Much of what I do gets purged after six months. This sounds like I can work from anywhere, which theoretically is true, but I can only work remotely for two days before I need to physically authenticate. The only physical item I can't do without is my smartphone. So there it is, my last remaining physical tool, a lowly Pixel 6a.

Hehe, I remember using a T-square during my high school Drafting class. Twas always fun drawing those straight lines. Which in your collection do you more often wear when working, if ever? And show us photos of any of your beaters!

Hehe, I never realized apathy brings success in motorsport. But, your Mazda Miata is cool. 😎

Ah yes, the classic tools of an important partner of parents-- a Pediatrician.🤝 You help allay many fears of parents. My son really appreciated the kind way his pediatrician treated him whenever we visited her clinic. He never feared going to his pediatrician, unlike other kids. Hats off to you for the work you do.

It's the first time I've seen your Skyhawk. Looks cool. The watches for your clinic days are spot on. I guess you use your unique Cartier outside work?

Thank you, hopefully I'll be like your son's pediatrician one day! As for the Cartier, I do wear it to clinic sometimes 🙂 On days I feel extra fancy I guess.

Thanks!! And those are great - you really captured those sunsets perfectly. Balancing the exposure on a scene like that is really tough TBH.

Also love Snapseed as well as Lightroom Mobile for mobile photography edits. It’s crazy what you can get from a phone these days.

😀🍻

Wow, thanks! Coming from you, man... greatly appreciate it. 🍻 Yeah, twas tough getting those shots. My success rate is usually 1 good shot out of 6-7 shots, testing the effects of aperture, speed, etc. 😜 Honestly, I find today's DSLR more complicated. Just too many variables to figure out. When changing settings, you have to go to the Q or Menu and fidget it there. You lose out on the experience of just being in the moment, and taking the shot.

Back in the day when I used a Canon AE-1, you buy your film (ASA100, 200, or 400, and your stuck with that), then just adjust the speed and aperture. Metering was done by the camera with the gauge on the left side of the viewfinder. Balance that up or down depending on the effect you want (slightly over or under exposed). Changing settings was simple and more ergonomic/ intuitive. Aperture change with your left hand while also adjusting focus, speed change with your right hand. Oh well...

You're right, phones these days can make a super amateur seem like a pro like you! Couple that with them using Snapseed or Lightroom... Now where's the fairness in that? Hehehe. 🤣 I've tried Lightroom in the past, and my lady also likes it. I find Snapseed easier to use, as I don't want to make too many edits on a shot. I enhance/edit based on what I remember the scene to have actually been in that moment, which the camera was limited in capturing. But of course, nothing beats the beauty we see with our naked eyes. 😉

Awesome looks! I think the good thing about the Cartier is that it's not popular enough for most people to realize it's Cartier 😅 A keeper for me for many different reasons.

Now about that SNKL... 😍

You're right about your Cartier. It can easily go under the radar. That's especially good as an anti-theft tactic. ;) Definitely a keeper, right?

What SNKL..? :P

I typically travel with a two / three watch set: a travel watch [such as a G-Shock], a diver [these two can be combined] and a dress watch [choice depends on the color of the leather shoes I'm packing - if both black and brown, then it could be two dress watches with different color straps as I dislike strap-changes when traveling].
