Coolest Combos for the Classics

What's the first word you think of when you hear the word "Classic"? For me, the first words that come to mind are music... literature / novels... art... architecture... design aesthetics... fashion. Most common among all these is the idea of innate beauty that can stand the test of time.

In the realm of watches, most will agree that the first word to come to mind is "vintage".

Image

Now, I'm no vintage watch expert, nor do I aspire to be one. I only have two vintage pieces in my collection: the lovely 1970 Seiko DX 6106C-8240 above from @GasWorks's masterful spa, and this Smiths pocket watch.

Image

Despite the obvious shortfall in the number of vintage watches in my collection, compared to seasoned collectors, I do have a fair sense of how to bring out the classic charm of "them old pieces".

Specifically, I have a good inkling as to which strap or bracelet will compliment, match, and accentuate its innate...

...and symmetry.

When this lovely piece from Gareth finally arrived last July 2023, I wasted no time looking for the straps and bracelets above. For me, these are classic straps and bracelets that bring out the intended and inherent beauty of my vintage Seiko DX.

When I acquire some more vintage timepieces in the future, I think I'll be able to find once more, the most suitable matches.

To all #vintage watch collectors, whether budding or seasoned conossieurs:

What are some examples of cool and classic straps and bracelets that you think any vintage collector should seriously consider having in their collection?

Many will surely appreciate your excellent and expert advice.

GREAT pics (as always) my dude! 👌🏻.

I'd say a good Forstner Komfit and/or Klip (or a Bonklip/bamboo) bracelet are good to have around.

I don't have any vintage Seiko's at the moment, but love the look of the Forstner's. Not too mention they are EXTREMELY comfortable and lightweight.

You're quite right, bro. That Forstner Komfit looks awesome on the Timex Q reissue. I agree as well, the Bonklip bracelet design is another one that will be period correct for certain vintage pieces. Image

Great pictures of your Seiko- it looks beautiful, you definitely have an eye for the tight strap / bracelet combo.

I’ve been thinking of buying vintage for some time but keep chickening out. I did however buy a modern vintage watch with some history recently. NG Super Antarctic. It fits the bill for now until I finally take the leap for full on vintage. Cheers.

Thanks, mate. And, that strap on your classy Omega Pie-Pan Constellation is an excellent match. By the way, The Screwtape Letters is a classic whose truths are timeless and relevant.

Thanks. Film still has a place. Love going to classical car shows with old cameras. Shooting go home and develop them over a glass of wine. Makes for a wonderful day. Cheers.

Awesome, mate! Film will always have its place. I just didn't advance that far in the photography hobby as it was too expensive already for me as a teenager. But, I could imagine the thrill and anticipation you probably have each time you develop your shots in your dark room.

Really a delightful post to read and your photos are smashing. It seems a very appropriate topic today...the classics. today happens to be to 200th anniversary of the premiere of Beethoven's 9th symphony in Vienna.

I was going to do a post about it, but as I have no Austrian or even German watches I didn't have any material to work with. great job today hakki !

This an older photo, but it shows one of the few times that I have truly tried to match an older watch with a period correct strap. There is a market of NOS straps, bands, and bracelets out there. They tend to run on the small end of the spectrum. I think that we have grown a little larger as a species in the past few decades. Vintage straps or bracelet can be just as inventive as their modern equivalents.

Image

This Kreisler mesh bracelet is light and comfortable. The slight curve of the end link and spring bars is a nice touch.

Image

This is another Kreisler that combines mesh and expandible elements. (The expandible part had it replaced by leather.) I have a hard time with the constant pressure of expandable bands, but I have a stainless steel Bellavance that is comfortable nevertheless. I wrote about expandable bands here.

(Edit: The Screwtape Letters is one of the few books that rewards re-reading.)

Beethoven’s 9th and Mahler’s 2nd. My favorites among so many.

It takes time to digest Mahler. But when ready he is grand. His 2nd is truly spectacular. The listening is an event.

Completely agree. One has to invest to reap the rewards. A good example of that is the 3rd symphony as well. Among my personal favorites are the 4th 2nd and most of all, Das Lied Von Der Erde

·

The 2nd is the most accessible in my opinion.

Wow, I never realized nor knew it's the 200th anniversary of the premiere of Beethoven's 9th symphony in Vienna. Thanks for sharing. Go ahead and still make a post. Perhaps you can write along the lines of "which watch would I wear if I attended the Vienna Philharmonic gala concert celebrating the 200th anniversary?" ;)

See @lightblueonetime, we learned something new again today. 🙂

Wonderful recommendations as always, good sir.

Vintage straps or bracelet can be just as inventive as their modern equivalents.

I agree. In fact, those curved end links and spring bars demonstrate such inventiveness. They should bring these back, pronto! They nicely complement and elevate the classy look of your gorgeous Eternamatic and Bulova.

Thanks also for sharing your article on expandable bracelets. I enjoy wearing them too, for its practicality and its looks. They are in a class all their own, and like you, should they return, I am more than ready.

Finally, 100% yes, The Screwtape Letters is a classic-- wisely written, stands the test of time, and uniquely rewarding each time it is read.

@yankthemike @abellia11214 Gents, because of you both, I will listen to Beethoven’s 9th and Mahler’s 2nd today. I'll also check out Beethoven's 3rd symphony and Mahler's Das Lied Von Der Erde.

My Dad and Mom always enjoyed classical music, and if they were still here, they'd surely appreciate it. Thanks for sharing.

Beethoven 6th and 7th are also amazing.

I listened to the 9th Symphony and majority of the Chorals are so familiar, especially Choral 4 because the main melody was adapted into the great Christian hymn "Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee'. I believe my parents had a CD of the 9th, and they'd play it either at home, or while in the car. Will listen to the 6th and 7th too. Thanks, mate!
