"True GMT"

What do you guys think about the new JM? Same exact movement as on the series 8 but at a lot less money. Sure the citizen has its reputation as a solid reliable brand and even though it has an msrp of almost $700 more, you can find them discounted to save a few hundred dollars. Some folks may not be into that integrated bracelet look. The jm is 40mm and the citizen is 41mm so a slight difference there. But would you be willing to buy the jm for $999? I remember when spinnaker first came out and they had those quartz sailing type colorful watches. I actually liked those pieces but I never got one. Now they've upped their lineup as is Vaer. Do you see Jack Mason as an affordable "fashion brand" or does their new strat changed your mind? 🤔

Jack Mason have certainly stepped up in the past 2-3 years, although I think some of their prices are a bit high for what you get. On looks alone, I prefer the Jack Mason to the Citizen. I am not a fan of the dial on the Citizen. Is that supposed to be a carbon fiber texture?

·

Personally I think I would spend the extra on the Citizen but that just my opinion seal.

·

as far as i know the citizen movement is a bit different, its no miyota 9075 but thats just what i heard and i dont know the difference tbh 😅

·

I have bought couple JMs one I gifted to a family member. They definitely have come a long way, I agree with @caktaylor they can get a lil pricey for what you get but if I had to choose between the 2 I would go for JM.

·

Personal preference but I’d go JM on looks

It's funny that you asked this question, as I just went through this exact situation. I ended up picking the JM Strat O Timer over the Series 8. My reasoning is that 1) the JM looks better in my opinion 2) I own multiple Citizens and the JM is by far the most comfortable watch I own 3) the movements are essentially the same, however Citizen has tweeked theirs. From what I've researched, Citizen's is a Miyota 9054 vs the JM 9075, the 9054 has a higher power reserve and higher anti- magnetic rating. But, JM claims to regulate the 9075 to +/- 5 sec a day, which beats the 9054.

I do believe that the JM is a bit overpriced, but yet I still bought it. No regrets on my end and I'm very happy with my decision.

As long as you're happy with it that's what counts, I think it looks better myself

Thanks for the link

The Jack Mason looks like another Rolex/Seiko homage. It's a 'one of many' watch. It does not stand out and looks a bit boring.

The Cirizen is a unique design and has a far superior presence.

The Citizen easily wins this comparison.

They're definitely very nice looking

I Think it is

I love my dark night Strat-o-timer. It's a great watch!

·

The only problem with your proposition is that Citizen developed a new beefed up movement, the 9054, which is a development of the Miyota 9075 used in the JM as well as several Bulovas. The Citizen 9054 that also has enhanced anti magnetic properties. The Citizen is also better regulated I believe.

Only you can determine if this justifies the additional cost of the Citizen.

·

Id like to support the little guy and JM seems like a great company but Citizen is one of my favorite watch manufacturers so I'd be torn. I am not fond of the dial on the Series 8 to be honest. The normal series 8 dials look better. JM takes it here for me.

I have the Jack Mason x WatchCrunch Strato-O-Timer and I am very happy with it. I think they are a brand on the rise.

Thanks for that interesting post, as I'm actually quite attracted by the Citizen.

But actually they are using different movements.

Citizen: Miyota 9054 (developed exclusive for the Series 8 GMT)

JM: Miyota 9075 (based on 9015)

Although both movements appears similar, but the 9054 has much more magnetic resitance, more Power Reserve and higher accuracy.

The 9075 is in germany already known because of Zeppelins Atlantic GMT 84683.

Price: 500 € (but easy to find for 400)

Citizen could had made it easy to simply use the 9075. Bu I actually love that Citizen goes that extra mile to developed an exclusive movement for the more expensive new watch and the aspiration to offer the customer an special product (I'm looking at you IWC Ingenieur).

But back to your question: No. I'm actually not that attracted by the JM.

But fair enough to say if a 9075 would make you happy, here's another great alternative:

The new Wise ADAMASCUS ADX120 True GMT for 720$ as Pre-Order.

Oof...they've gone to $720 now? When I ordered my Wise it was $680 and I still got another $80 off the price for early orders.

Never heard of Wise before. That watch is impressive but loses me at the polished center links. The Jack Mason Dark Knight is on my list of watches to get. I'd take either the JM or Wise ahead of the Citizen, adjustable clasps for the win.

Both are actually quite fair prices as long the quality is given.

According to their website they want to start shipping in April. Please share some images of yours when you get yours.

Which color did you ordered?

the Series 8 looks really cool, but I'd wonder if it'd wear too big (it's 41mm and has an integrated bracelet design, which always seems to wear bigger that its dimensions). And it's quite expensive. That dial though; it's fantastic!

Can't speak for JM, but they look great from what I've seen on the Youtubes. I did pick up the Vaer Meridian G5 GMT in 39mm with the Miyota 9075 on a whim. It's really nice and the bracelet is great!! It is a little on the tall side, however. You don't notice it as much on-wrist, but I don't know why they made it so tall (it's like 15mm in height, counting the sapphire crystal).

I bought the green one. It was $684 then and I get an $84 further discount for... I forgot the reason they used. Probably super early bird special? *Shrug*

Looks like that, I went with the green GMT hand. Bought this one because I missed Jack Mason's WatchCrunch collaboration.

That was really a great deal. Fot 600 you can't go wrong and I actually think it is an esthetical better looking watch than the JM in my opinion.

FlashF1R3

I’m a citizen fan but $700 is a huge difference in price so maybe I’d go JM on this one.

There are JDM sites listing the Citizen for less than $1,000.

·

I have mixed feelings about both watches citizen is creating good time pieces I think, don’t know about the other brand

·
JerodR

I clearly stated that the Citizen uses a 9054

Not debating that.

The JM is a Miyota movement.

What I was pointing out is that the Miyota 9057 used in the JM is an inferior to the 9054 used in the Citizen.

Seems you think otherwise.

Also, I hope you understand that Miyota is to Citizen as ETA is to Swatch. The main difference is that Miyota movements are easier to acquire than ETA, which has limited distribution outside the Swatch group. Both a”Miyota and ETA are vertically integrated within their respective corporations.

·

Stevie, maybe you miss read or I wasn't clear enough in my writing, my apologies. Yes, I understand that the Miyota 9054 is superior to the Miyota 9075. Which is why I wrote it has a higher anti magnetic rating and higher power reserve. The only thing that I wrote is that JM supposedly regulates the 9075 they use to +/- 5 sec, which beats the 9054's +/- ~10-20sec.

·

i would go with the JM but i am biased
