Rolex GMT 6542 vs Tudor BB58 GMT

I initially didn’t understand the gilt on the Black Bay 58 GMT. After looking at tons of past references, it’s possibly a nod to the 6542. Yes that’s blue and red bezel but due to the Bakelite bezel, the blue sometimes get dark and looks almost black.

And just like that the gilt made sense!

Knowing Tudor tend to look into the past for inspiration, it’s a possibility.

What do you guys think?

I’ve literally just made that comparison to my wife!

Will stick with the Monta in this case.

The Monta’s bracelet wears better than my Tudor watches. I’ve been debating changing out the bracelets on my Tudors.

·

I don’t see the resemblance! ( 😉😆)

Would love to hear opinions on those who will absolutely lambast homages, then turn around and say, "Like OMG, it's sooo perfect, Orignal, ah the heritage, you can smell how awesome it is."..👀🤏🏻😂

Meanwhile Monta (amongst others) and a whole host of micros be like...

The handset on the Monta is SO much better, and about half the price doesn’t hurt, either

I really like the look of it I’m a total Tudor fan boy now 🙈🤣 I love my bb gmt I like the chunkiness of it it’s feels like a (real man’s) watch 💪💪 i would like to see it in person and feel how it wears and the up date in testing and accuracy is great i have to admit my Pelagos 42 and bb gmt keep great time from 0 to +2 seconds a day my royal day date is not as good about +5 seconds a day what is still really good for a none cosh movement

Here's a total noob question: The gilt color on the hands / indices of the Rolex are a result of aging, right? If you bought one of them new in the 1960's would it all have been white?

I'm just trying to wrap my head around the gilt craze of the past decade and whether it is a nod to the past or more of a grab at nostalgia (a thin line separating the two, I know)

·

I think Tudor honors the past and paves the future for its big brother.

I think this combo, while a nod to the past 6542 or gilt models is also telling that in the future we will see red and black somewhere else on a crown watch.

Tudor has used titanium and red text accents before only for it to show up on crown watches.

I say this as someone with a handful of Tudors I love, I wouldn’t trade my Monta for this new release.

·

Paint the damn GMT hand in a contrasting color! All that gilt is making my eyes bleed

·

It must be! Kinda wish they did a roulette date wheel.

·

I’m hopeful that we see some additional colorways in the nearish future (1-2 years). I’d really like an 6542 albino revival, and a white (or even better, opaline) version of the BB58 GMT would really hit the mark - even if I have to put an Uncle Straps jubilee ... er Executive ... bracelet on to truly get the look I want. I mean, a BB54 GMT in opaline would be even better, but if wishes were fishes ...

It’s a good thing I have the watches I do so I can wait 😄

I totally agree with this.

Rolex knows it position and cannot be seen to live on past successes, so its design has to push forward and be modern.

However, the watches in its past are beautiful. It relies on Tudor to expand on that aesthetic and make it available.

Homage, not copies.

In the new Tudor, the hands and indices are light green, what would seem to be the natural colour of lume, not patina like old watches.

·

Cool kind of tribute to that older GMT master 👍🏻I love the new Tudor gmt’s color 👌🏻

·

Seeing this just makes me wish for more…make that ANY…innovation from either brand and makes me feel kinda bad for the poor designers who can’t get an idea bolder than a bezel color change pushed through…
