Watch recommendation

I’m thinking about getting seiko 5 gmt and longines Zulu time. Should I get the seiko 5 for the first watch and then later on getting Zulu time?

I’m new to watches and collection still finding out my style and what I like. I’m not sure if I get seiko 5 it will make it to be part of my collection.

The Longines’s is an awesome watch, but you are committing $2500 USD to try it out. If you are just starting and have the budget…cool, but otherwise might help to wait a little while until your taste settles. The other aspect is starting with a watch like the Spirit Zulu will set a high bar for others down the road.

Wow, there are a lot of questions here. What’s your budget? Like why are you deciding between watches with such differing prices? And what are you looking for with this purchase? Is this a work watch, for casual use?

My budget is around £2000-3000, but the thing is i have went through a lot of options like Tudor black bay and so on and settled on Zulu time which i actually I’m planning to buy but im just waiting a little bit before rushing out so in the mean time i was thinking to get seiko 5 which would be work, casual watch. Should I get it or not ? @AllTheWatches

·

I would go with Zulu first if you plan to get it anyway. That way, as they are similar, you aren't left with a Seiko you don't wear or only wear because you think you should.

I’d say get the Zulu Time, it looks. I owned a Seiko 5 GMT, it was a nice watch don’t get me wrong, but for me it just wasn’t hitting the spot. I never felt much when wearing it. I ended up selling the Seiko 5 GMT to buy myself a Lorier Hyperion GMT. The Zulu seems more like a GADA watch. But this all my take on it. Hope that helps and good luck on the next watch!!!

·

Would have to agree, get the Spirit Zulu, but find an AD that has other brands so you can try on various watches, but it is hard to go wrong with that model.

·

You need to compare apples to apples. These two are different levels, both good but the Longines is in a different league.

·

Longines

·

Slow down. . . . . Whats the hurry?

If these are your first two watches and you are very new to the hobby, your taste has a good chance of evolving and changing over time.

Look at some less expensive options and develope your taste before commiting 2.5 k

(Unless 2.5 k is small change to you, in which case fill your boots)

·

Once you get the pricer/higher quality watches, you never go back. My watch box is filled with cheap stuff from when I started out. Maybe that's unavoidable, but if I could go back in time I would definitely steer myself towards getting a couple higher end pieces, versus a lot of more affordable stuff. My point is, that when you get to the point where you have both watches, you'll never go back to the Seiko. Why would you? You're gonna put the best thing you've got on your wrist. My two cents.

I agree with this. When you start at upper bar, its almost impossible to go lower.

·

I have both. The Seiko is good for the price but the Longines is on another level by far. I’ll be selling the Seiko soon because it gets no wrist time.

You nailed it with this comment.

You won’t regret the Longines Spirit Zulu Time. Go for it

·

The zulu time is pure eye candy.

Get one watch . The new Seiko SPB383 . It will cover all your needs . Its a tough diver's watch with a gmt complication .

·

Let's be frankly.

I don't believe in "starter watches".

If there is a watch you might like, just go for it.

I see some people recommending to buy the Seiko first to try out before paying much more for the Longines which you might not like.

So spending 400 to 500 €/$ for a try out sou d actually much more expensive to me.

If it doesn't hurt you, go straight to Longines. There worlds between the quality of those watches.

If you need a second gmt watch for rough situations, you can purchase the Seiko afterwarts.

If not save that money for the Longines.

Uf you are unhappy with the Zulu...sell it. That will make no difference at the end like if you had payed for the Seiko. You might even save some money.

That's my personal opinion.

·

I believe that both watches can be part of a collection with no conflict. I own the skx and I love it, awesome watch for the price. I've read a few comments about you changing (or evolving) your watch taste, imo: TRUE, but still, this two watches are great and you will love them for a while. The only advice from me would be that buying two watches at the same time will not allow you to enjoy a proper "Honeymoon" with each watch... And they deserve it!!! Cheers and buy what you like

·

Hi E. I would go with the Longines GMT only because of its versatility. It is easier under the shirt or spring jacket cuffs and it is a smoother view when looking down your arm. I consider it more of a stated timepece while the Seiko GMT is more of a timing device on the wrist. I'm certain the bracelet of the Seiko GMT wears better, but bracelets are exchangeables for straps. Hope this helps, but more so congrats on the choices. Awesome :-)

·

I'd go for the Zulu Time, it is a beautiful watch

·

If you have the excess funds go immediately with Longines. There is world apart in those two watches ( as price reflects ) and if you want Longines no Seiko will suffice. Don't know why you would buy an interim watch.

If you don't have the funds available then save a bit more and buy Longines when ready.

·

I have the Seiko 5 GMT SSK001 and I absolutely love it. It is one of my favorite daily drivers in my collection. I think it will become a collectors item in the future because it was the first NR34 movement from Seiko. I believe it will eventually be the equivalent in our collections to the SKX. IâÂÂd say get it first.

No harm getting both IMHO. I’ve two GMTs in my watch box and interchange them frequently- and one of them is the Seiko SSK031K. Start with the Seiko, see how that goes

Buenas...

Get the longines, the 5 GMT just doesn't feel what it should for those who has/had the SKX.

Every journey is different

Sometimes you have to go through the cycle of being very excited about getting something just to have that purchase show you that's there are other directions

All this folks telling you, wait, what's the hurry, explore more before spending more, are trying to keep you from making mistakes we have made.

But if you don't make does same mistakes you won't learn from them

As long as you have the money and none of this is making you stretch, go for it

If you can handle the watches at an AD first

But yeah just follow your heart, feel free to make mistakes and learn from them

It's all part of the journey

From my personal (slightly painful) experience, getting the substitute or “tester” watch doesn’t work out. If budget permits, get the watch that you want. You have already mentioned you are not sure about whether the Seiko 5 is going to be worn … then why buy it?

Honestly I ended up buying it, and love it. Soon will get the Zulu time. I feel addicted to it.

If you don’t love it, don’t buy it. If you want the Zulu, no amount of Seiko’s will make you happy.
