Would you?

If you had the means and/or opportunity ,whether it's your own money, backing from investors, or interest from your many social media influencer accounts (sometimes I feel like I'm the only one left without one), would you start your own watch brand?

I would not.

#1 Mostly because I feel like if I started my own watch brand, I would be limited to wearing my own watches. It's hard to convince people your watches are worth buying if you're not even wearing one.

#2 The quickest way to suck all the fun out of your hobby and ruin it, is to make it your job.

HOWEVER.... If I had enough celebrity I would happily do a collaboration with a watch company.

What do you think? If you could would you start your own watch label?

Nah, for the exact same reasons you state.

Though, I think watch enthusiasts would give a half pass on number 1

·

Probably I would not, but I would take watchmaking classes and try to design my own watch. I think the process of making a watch is fun.

·

Yeah I would if it was a quality product I believed in. And I would still happily and openly wear other watches in addition to my brand.

·

No interest whatsoever. I'm not creative and have no desire to tinker with designing watches. I let the experts do their thing.

I've seriously considered taking watch making classes (or YouTube do it yourself videos) to service a watch. Seems like a great extension of my hobby. But that's a lot different than owning a watch brand.

·

Nope but I have several "prototypes" 😉

I do like to tinker and design. But owning it is a whole different level.

Those prototypes are fire! When do they launch?

Maybe you could double wrists it. Your label on one wrist. A different brand on your other.

·

Does not take much to launch your own brand. Many brands launch with almost no capital and simply kickstart it and use a private label co.

Keep at it! Now I did enjoy a class I took where we tok apart a movement and then reassembled it. That was great but I would not service, modify or take apart watches I've bought.

That what AliX builds are for! 😁

I mean I guess technically I could start a Watch brand with a CC and AliExpress. But they wouldn't be the best watches.

Here is the reality, many brands with Swiss based private labels are not very good either. For less than $10K and a kickstarter launch, I could launch my own “Swiss made” brand. Like I said, does not take much.

Marc from Islander double wrists all kinds of stuff, sometimes Islanders, but also many other brands and it’s no big deal.

I hav a crazy idea to design a watch .. a watch without the screw crown.. a watch where the bezel can be rotate and act as a screw crown, where u can similarly pull it out to 1 and 2 position to adjust the date/day and the time … the watch gonna look more symmetrical with clean circular shape without the protruding crown !!! 😂😂👌 but I afraid u might hv to invent a new movement concept to interact with the bezel moves 😆

Similar concept is the Ulysse Nardin Freak. You set the time with the bezel.

I don't know anything about racing but it sounds cool. The racing watches part anyway. The legal gymnastics not so much.

Yup, I reckon 80s/70s style sport watches with automatic movements and old racing livery colour palettes and logos would look sick

I didnt know about this ! Thats cool

·

I dont know. I wanna get into the entrepreneurial mindset once i finish medschool and I’ve always thought that doing it in something I love would make it better

·

I would start my own brand but as a cnc engineer, I would have to make everything but the movement.

Yes and I did start my own company. Easy fix I had my watch modded to a left hand drive so now I double wrist. 😉

I took a look at your profile and website. Very impressive! Masonic watches seems a little niche but I'm excited to see the Datematic that's coming.

it’s like any other business , if you have the cash flow of your ambitions, understand the business and the market ( i meam really understand it ) , you can create a niche . doesn’t mean any business can succeed , I mean the right business with the right minds can create its place . That said wouldn’t be my first venture 😂

I honestly think I could do it! But my fear is watch burnout. I enjoy watches. It's all watches all the time. But it of choice. I worry if it was my job I might grow to resent watches after a while. I don't want to ruin my hobby 😁

But I like the crown! 😜 But I'm sure there is a market for it.

Sounds like your in the "Yes I would!" camp

I thought people who finished med school became doctors? 😜

You might be right. Starting a business in something you are excited about might take the edge off of going to work. Only one way to find out....

It is a little niche but I’m fairly certain I can sell my first run to friends and brothers and that helps fund the next run thus the datematic. It will use the same case with yet another historically inspired set up. We have at least 2 other versions mapped out this year one of which will have a different movt and function.

Wait.... Make everything yourself? Like actually be the boots on the ground, hands on, operating machinery? Sounds like a lot. But you would no concerns about quality control.

Yeah that’s obviously the main goal😂 but Investing on the side is also important. Maybe when i get older, have a bit more money and time I could go for investment in watches. Just dont know how yet
