What is brand? What is a watch? Seiko vs Money…

I’ve experienced many “high brands” and can afford to buy them but as a logical, stylish and tasteful man who loves watches, I seem to always gravitate to Seiko. I admit I live in Japan so am biased but in the end I can’t warrant spending thousands of dollars on watches when the same feeling of engineering and style is present in a watch of 500-2000 bucks. I tried to fall for the brand which promises me women, status and self satisfaction, but it seems I’m doing just fine in all those areas and also satisfying myself and my lust for exquisite timepieces in Seiko. What do you all think?

I kinda agree, my collection is majority Seiko’s but I love variety so I dabble on the Swiss and German end BUT no one promised me women!! And prestige!! 😂 I do gravitate to Seiko more often than most brands it’s maybe because it’s available and they’re good reliable brand…also nice watch I have the same one 😝

in the end just enjoy what you love, since it is your own money. also who the f tell you some watchbrand can get us a girl? 😂😂.

I think it boils down to the fact that regardless of what tier you are collecting in, Seiko has a great variety of really good looking watches to choose, coupled with a brand with a proven track record and rich heritage. I tend to collect at the budget and entry level and also have good number of Seiko watches in my collection that all look great on the wrist. Here are four of my favorites; one dress/everyday, one diver's, one field, and one pilot.

Each of these has a sharp look that is almost instantly identifiable as a Seiko beyond the presence of the logo.

I am definitely the same.  I just tell myself, who cares what others thinks, if you love the watch, get it.

I learned a lesson a long time ago, and it has served me well. "Never project your wallet on others.". I am a huge Grand Seiko fan, and I love and own brands like Omega, JLC, UN etc as well because they offer products that are value for money. I am also constantly chasing after independent brands, and there are several from Japan like Kurono ( Hagime Asaoka) etc which I love. Unfortunately some other independents from Japan are JDM only. I am definitely not in a financial position to afford a Patek, but many of my friends won't wear anything but a Patek, DB, VC etc. If they can afford a 50k watch and don't hurt financially good for them.

I love Seiko, especially vintage ones. They are more addictive than crystal meth. And the watch has yet to be created that can help me with my women, status and self satisfaction problems.

·

for the brand which promises me women, status and self satisfaction

That is a pretty bold brand statement, which brand is that?

·

I don't think price & quality/function/feature has linear relationship (i.e. watch that's twice expensive is not always twice better built and/or has twice the functions, etc...) but I can see that higher end watches do have higher quality finishing and better quality control. This is even true within Seiko lineups. So, at the end of the day, I personally consider the price-to-satisfaction (not always Value) as the key factor, and this applies to everything I buy.

·

The biggest difference must be in CQ. A Seiko can punch way above it's weight if you get at good piece and regulate it a bit.

·

Seiko is one of my favorite brands.

I do have a couple of Omega’s and they are great, but i do gravitate to Seiko. (That maybe why i have 6 of them)

I agree with the sentiment, even though I have no love for Seiko.

I have come to the conclusion that spending more money on watches will not bring me any more happiness from watches. A $1000 CW will actually make me more happy than a $5000 Tudor, because with the CW I have a great watch, and $4000 to spend on other hobbies/interests.

I don’t let logic impact my watch decisions. I’m in this hobby for the joy I get from owning and interacting with these amazing little pieces of functional jewelry. If I let logic steer the ship, I would have trouble justifying anything beyond a G Shock square. So enjoy your Seikos and whatever else you like.

In my own personal battle of Seiko vs money, money often loses (and when it does, I win!)

·

where did you bought the strap of your turtle?

·

Wise decision. Regardless of the funds, can’t deny the greatness of Seiko!

Right? Logic seems like a misplaced factor in watch collecting. If I only apply logic to my buying decisions I won’t even get 1 watch, let alone 10s of them.

"I don't let logic impact my watch decisions." Thread winner!

I have four quartz Seikos with the SGE prefix. Each one cost $95 or less. They have sapphire, 100m WR, very accurate 7N42 movements and sensational dials. I would put them up against anything.
