My first timepiece - Hamilton Khaki Field

Many years ago, I decided to treat myself to a birthday gift that would last a lifetime: my first timepiece. After much research and consideration, I ultimately chose the Hamilton Khaki Field.

As a tech enthusiast, I had been following the rise of smart watches and considered purchasing an Apple Watch. However, after weighing the pros and cons of a mechanical timepiece versus a modern smart wear device, I ultimately decided that a traditional timepiece would be a better fit for me.

One of the main reasons I chose a mechanical timepiece is its history and timelessness. The Hamilton Khaki Field is a classic watch that has been around for decades and will continue to be relevant for many years to come. It is a timepiece that tells a story and has a sense of utility that a smart watch could never replicate.

Additionally, a mechanical timepiece requires no charging and has no dependencies on software or batteries. It is a watch that will always keep time as long as you own it, and that is something that I find very appealing.

Another important factor in my decision was the aesthetic appeal of a mechanical timepiece. The Hamilton Khaki Field is a beautiful watch with a simple yet elegant design that can be worn in any situation. The watch has a timeless look that will always be in style.

In conclusion, I made the decision to purchase a mechanical timepiece, The Hamilton Khaki Field, as my first timepiece, and I have never looked back. It is a watch that I will treasure for years to come, and I am confident that it will remain a valuable possession for the rest of my life. It is a reminder of the importance of tradition, history, and timelessness in our fast-paced world.

Great choice, and welcome to the hobby. One thing I would suggest; as you have an automatic watch, try to refer to it as an automatic watch. While an automatic watch is a mechanical watch, people tend to use mechanical to largely refer to hand-winding watches, and automatic for watches with rotors that self wind (some of which can also hand wind, just to be confusing!) Again, saying you have a mechanical watch isn't wrong, but some people will assume you are saying it's a hand-winding unit if you use the term :)

Thank you for the clarification, I've been using mechanical to refer to both manual and automatic watches. I greatly appreciate the lesson :)

All good man. Coincidentally you'll see it a lot in the Hamilton catalogue itself, as they do some great mechanical and automatic (mechanical) models within the same ranges, like the Khaki Field watches.

Excellent watch. Tremendous value for money in the watch world.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts so artfully.

Excellent choice for a first timepiece! Now you just have to curb the desire for more timepieces 😉

Though good intentions, it's too late for me. I have since then purchased, the Khaki Aviation X-Wind Auto Chrono, Rolex Explorer, Omega Speedmaster Professional,  Cartier Tank Must (for the wife) and Jaegar-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin. The last four I acquired during the course of last year (2022).

Congrats! All excellent choices.

That’s a great first watch, well done. I first got into mechanical watches because I loved the idea that I wouldn’t have to change batteries…it would just run as long as I did.

Bingo-you saved me some time!

Congrats 🍾

·

It could have been a one and done watch?! But I guess not since I find you here?

·

Same first mechanical watch as me. You have great taste, sir. 😆👍🏻

·

A well-written post detailing your deeply-held sentiments of your Hamilton. Your simmering passion is the personification of why we congregate here. Indeed…it is a grand place to be.

·

Solid choice. I’m thinking of buying it for my son on his upcoming birthday.

·

I could say all sorts of things about the Khaki Field, but you’ve summed it up perfectly. Well done! 🎯 💯

I still love my Khaki, and it will be my 'forever' watch probably, but I realised it can't be my one-watch-collection watch - it just doesn't work well with bracelets. Leather straps are cool and all, but you wouldn't swim in them, wouldn't you? For me it's a case of rain and sweat (given the designated use of the watch) - I don't want to replace straps after every mountain hike :)

Excellent choice and very nice the way it is telling. I see you've advanced the hobby with more great picks. I also have the Hamilton Khaki Field, my favorite watch!

I have, but I fear I may have to take a breather this year. Let‘s see how that goes, as my wife has made her request for her next timepiece as an anniversary gift 😆
