Sinn 556A vs 856

Can you tell the difference? There isn't much separating the 556A and the 856 (non-UTC version).

  • The 856 is slighly larger (40mm vs 38.5mm)

  • The movement in the 856 is better (SW300 vs SW200), but it ditches the display case back.

  • The 856 is fully Tegimented for super toughness. This gives the steel a slightly darker hue.

And of course, there's the price. The 556A is currently 1250 euros on the bracelet, and the 856 is 2100 euros.

I know a lot of folks have the 556A or 556I. Would you pay the extra 850 euros for the upgrade, or is the 556 good enough? How do you think this improved version holds up against other watches in the same price range (Longines Spirit, Vertex, etc...)?

Personally, the 856 being tegimented is the only selling point for me.

I suppose it depends on how much scratches bother you...

I went a slightly different route, and bought a DS30. You get hardened U-boat steel, but the price is lower than the 556. I bought the bracelet for my DS30, but I never use it, I prefer wearing mine on a MN strap.

Damasko continues to interest me. I've heard a few times that it's cheaper than a Sinn, but the 556 with a leather strap is listed at 1040 euros where the DS30 on a similar strap is 1210 euros on their site. Are certain ADs selling the Damasko for cheaper?

To me, the 556 is the way to go because the top hat crown is so pronounced in the larger version. Why must their crowns be so massive? I have a 104 and it never bothered me until I noticed it.

It's less expensive in Canada to get a Damasko on leather, but each country might vary.

They both have a blemish at the 4-4:30 position. It might just be a pixelated artifact in the photo. I can’t be sure.

I have a 556 A but love the 856 too. I think they wear quite differently due to that small size increase on the 856, so try before you buy if possible?

These are both excellent piece's and the 856 certainly has the harder Tegimented coating which does work, as It does on my 857utc.

You'll be happy with either , unless you have a huge wrist then go with the 856.

The 856 apart fron the Tegiment has the additional magnetic resistance and dehumidifying technology (the divot you see above 6). In simple terms, it is more of a professional series compared to the 556a. If you care about the extra stuffs, then €850 difference makes sense. For many the 556a would still be better option for day to day use. Also, the difference between SW-200 and SW-300 is not day and night apart from the 4 hours power reserve increase.

If you are spending $2000, then the Longines Spirit 37mn is a much better option plus you can try that on at an AD and get is for a good price plus it comes with a chronometer movement.

The 556A is more than enough watch for my taste and needs. My days of needing super duper tough guy specs are long gone. There's a definite point of diminishing returns and ROI I apply to my hobbies of watches, astronomy, musical instruments, knives, and shooting. A lot of the fun for me is researching the best bang for the buck I can find for my budget.

Excellent point. Those features are probably well beyond what I actually need.

Being from Canada, that's good to hear.

You can't repent if you don't Sinn.

...😕, I will see myself out.

Sinn‘s tegimented steel is a present from heaven. I’m playing with the thought of buying a Sinn EZM3 which also has a tegimented case. My local Sinn AD gave me a hardened screwdriver and wanted me to scratch his personal tegimented Sinn watch. I wasn’t able to, it’s crazy.

Though, I wouldn’t buy the 856 over the 556, because of the larger size and the missing see-through case back.

I was researching these watches a while back. The big take away I discovered was that allegedly the 556 wears bigger than you might think because of it being an aviation/pilot watch for the dial. I forget who it was but they said that depending on your wrist size you might want to consider the 556 if you have small to medium wrists because of this.

I own the 556. I don't know if the scratch resistance makes the 856 worth the extra $1000. I know it hurts when you get scratches on a brand new watch, but once you have owned it for a few years you don't mind them so much.
