4:30 date windows are good

There shouldn't be any "controversy" or polarization about placing a date window at 4:30. The only real criticism is that it unbalances the dial, but that can only be alleviated by eliminating the date entirely or by placing it at 6 or 12. The common 3 o'clock placement still unbalances the dial, and it interferes with the lume at the 3 o'clock position, which is now required by the ISO standard for divers. If you put the date at 6, you run into the same problem with interfering with the lume. So, for divers at least, the 4:30 placement is best.

I disagree with your assessment completely! The 4:30 placement is, to my eye, grotesquely flawed. It unbalances the dial and looks idiotic to me.

But that’s me. I have a strong opinion, but it’s not so dogmatic as to naysay somebody else’s views.

Choice. It’s the enthusiast’s joy!

See, above the 6 would look better and give the date a practical size.

·

I don't dive... so my OCD says no date or at the 6... but it can't create an awkward bit of a number chopped off. That makes me crazy. My "water watch" has a day/date at the 3 spot and that's why I only wear in the pool. Everyday that would make me nuts. In the pool, with a beverage... I don't care so much.

But then no room for the MOD broad arrow...🤏🏻😉.

If they are at 4:30-ish, it's better to me, better still go be on the same plane as the rest of the dial...

IF there "has" to be a date.

The MOD arrow is just a bit of fantasy.

But I’m with you about dates…😃

Maybe on some.

For this particular variant of Holton Elliot Brown they jumped through the hoops for it. Hence why it was quartz, dual textured bezel, shock protected, etc.

Unit issue/collab for SBS. Don't know if it's still being used, but was when released.

Also dont know how easy/hard it is to officially get to use it, seeing as a lot of Chinese brands throw it on their stuff too.

Know Bremont, CWC, EB, and Vertex can use it "officially".

Sorry, but the arrow just seems gratuitous on a modern watch. Just me. 🤷🏼‍♂️

It's the same with other issued watches from Marathon, et al.

Unless one requests a "sterile" dial it's gonna have official verbage.

Hence the US Government stamps on the dial.

You can also purchase those stamped dials too.

Marketing? Prolly.

Personally I don't mind the arrow. Especially since it's black. Big white US GOVT, not so much.

I do get it. And sometimes it feels right. On the watch illustrated it seems inauthentic to me. I suppose it’s a philosophical thing.

Trust me, I’m not sneering or denigrating, even if I use ‘strong’ words. I firmly believe in ‘to each their own’.

Yup, 4:30 may be the worst placement

Didn't think that at all. Trust me, my skin is thick. Like concrete apocalypse bunker thick lol.

I greatly enjoy the vibe on WC, and have even stepped in to nip/shut up inappropriate peeps, but strong discourse and discussion is what should be happening.

Look up @Aurelian or @Porthole 😂

It's not everyone's cup of tea. Fine with me.

I really like the Holton Pro due to it being one of the few special issue watches that doesn't exist behind a luxury pay wall AND isn't exclusive to being in that unit, and is in stock.

It's just a solid, rugged, tool.

Of course it doesn't hurt that Elliot Brown proved the Holton Pro could tank some plastic high explosives via Alford Technologies, which adds style points for me, seeing as I've been known to break, burn, and blow things up professionally. (One could say long before my professional days too...👀🤏🏻😉)

They also sent one to the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico.

Both watches were off the shelf variants, not specially picked.

And that extreme torture testing is prolly why EB wants that arrow on the dial. Proof, pudding, and all that.

I love date window variety. 6:00 is my fave but 4:30 is great. I want to see a watch with it at some strange place, tho.

You have awoken me from a particularly good dream…

I find watches with “ghost” date positions far more offensive, as do I find skeleton watches with all the dates visible. If it has a date mechanism the window could go anywhere it pleases, it’s just a hole.

Symmetrical designs are more pleasing to the eye/brain... but symmetry doesn't equate with beauty and can be rather sterile/boring. The Japanese have an aesthetic principle called fukinsei which is all about asymmetry and irregularity.

My advice would be, if you don't like watches with the date at 4:30, don't buy watches with the date at 4:30. 😁

#just-fukinsei-ing

·

@solidyetti said my name three times into the mirror and I have appeared.

Nope. Don't care. Put them anywhere that they are legible.

Bilateral symmetry is supposedly one of the subconscious factors by which we judge beauty in other humans. It does not translate (supposing that it is true) to architecture or manufactured items in exactly the same way.

100% agree, if the argument is symmetry, well the date at 3 is no better

·

I also like a good 4:30 date!

Image

It's there when I need it, and I barely notice it when I don't. For me a watch is mostly function over form, so legibility and functionality will almost always trump design.

·

I agree!

My preference is no date > 6 > 4:30 > 3

As a preference I like a date window at 6 but IMO it kind of depends how it is executed. The date on the Sinn 556 is at 3 but it’s so discrete it not an issue to me.
