Every flieger is a pilot watch, but not every pilot watch is a flieger

I often see people referring to random pilot watches as fliegers, but in my opinion, unless it has a Type A or Type B dial, it shouldn’t be called a flieger. Some people might go so far as to say it also has to be made in Germany, but I’m willing to accept other countries of origin, as long as it has a Type A or Type B dial.

Any aviation watch can be a flieger.

is just a German word. Also the German army borrowed many designs from previous pilot watches:

I don‘t care 🙂. “Flieger” is just a casual German word for “pilot” or “airplane”.

I agree, probably not grammatically correct as it's a general word for "Flyer", but to me a "Flieger" has to be a very specific design, either type A or B.

The rest are "Pilots watches" as far as I'm concerned.

Fight me 😁🤣👍🏻

To me, a flieger is a type of pilot watch that has its roots in the FL 23883 used by the German air force during WWII. There’s no demand now for 55-mm chronometers with radium and straps long enough to use over a flight jacket, but the design language lives on. The quintessential flieger has these features:

-hacking movement for synchronization

-no complications to clutter the dial

-large case for visibility

-no polished surfaces

-smooth or coiled bezel

-unguarded onion crown usable with gloves

-lumed hands and dial

-leather strap

-the highly legible black flieger A or flieger B dial (left and right in photo) (bonus points for a sterile dial)

None of these are requirements, but the more of these it has, the more of a flieger it is. Of them, the dial is probably the most characteristic.

Nonsense. It says Flieger right on the dial.

I like your distinction between two different styles of aviator watches ... as is the styling say, between a Laco Type-B and an IWC Pilot Chrono
