My Watch Regrets and why..........

Hello watch friends!

At a loose end this lunch time I thought I’d add a little segment about REGRET!

I’ve had the obsession for well over 20 years I’d say, here are a few that got away (due to money woes, I had to sell)! ☹

The Omega Seamaster 300m 2004 edition x 2 (absolutely adored these) £1050 I PAID BRAND NEW, sold for a lot less ☹ this was my first luxury timepiece. The second one I got from eBay for around £800 but alas had to sell again.

Image

Omega Planet Ocean 600m 45.5m (loved this watch) £2560 I PAID BRAND NEW, sold for a lot less ☹ I really struggled to let this go, but I had to! I literally held onto it as the pawn broker tried to grab it, my face must have shown real regret.

Image

UBOAT – 53mm only cost me around £250 at the time, sold it for around £400, I wasn’t as bothered about this one, although looking back, it would make a cool piece in the collection now.

Image

Tag Heuer Connect FIRST EDITION - £1100 manage to sell for £950, the style was great, the technology wasn’t quite there. Plenty of people asked about it when I first had it.

Image

Frederique Constant Classics GMT Auto Steel 42 mm bought for £300 and sold for £650 a few months later. So all in all looking at my current collection, if these beauties were added to it, I’d have a very tidy collection so far, “but things happen for a reason”

Image

In time I'd like to add the 2 Omega's back into my collection, they are the ones I miss the most.

Thank you Ben

As you aptly put it, “things happen for a reason”…I’m sure you will add even more beautiful pieces to your collection.

A few weeks ago I had my birthday. And around a month before that I had the possibility to buy a Zelos Hammerhead burned orange. I didn't buy it because it was not my birthday then. And when it was the watch was already sold.

gutted, I know the feeling, it's a real shame, one day you will buy such a watch 🙏

the burnt orange is a real stunner!

I ended up buying a green San Martin SN0107-G3, which I like a lot.

But still.

I don't really have significant regrets. Sure, I have bought and resold at a loss a few time pieces over the past 10 years, but that was the cost of learning. If it doesn't bite, you'll keep making the same mistakes

Maybe selling my Omega SeaMaster 300, because I did not feel 100 % comfortable owning a watch with that price tag, is something I should not have done

·

I started with a huge Bell and Ross as a newcommer to a hobby a year ago, and recently started downsizing to 36mm!

Sold my SRPE51 and bought a chinese watch (San Martin) to try out. It looks great but the movement is rubbish.

Watch stops overnight after wearing for the entire day, worries about winding, and a very wobbly rotor. (which I tried to tighten but something must be out if alignment)

Never again getting another chinese watch.

I was comfortable with the watch and the price, I just needed a quick injection of cash, and the watch was the one thing I knew I could sell for the money I needed, just wish I'd got more for it 🥺

Seiko SRPD37J1 had a chance to buy this bad boy about 3 years ago then said "uh no al buy it when its a bit cheaper moving forward".... it was 9k and the exchange rate was 1usd = 14egp at the time.... now 1usd=37.5egp and it standa at 29K ATM

For reference my current salary is 3~4K (I make eliquid, as a side hustle and looking for a job as a chemical engineer)

on my radar is the SRPE51, I've never felt 100% about Bell & Ross, although I've never held one, my opinion might change, i also know what you mean about cheaper Chinese watches, we pay for what we get, if we pay good money, it'll be a very good watch, I'm still dubious about some of the AliExpress watches i look at, I've got a steeldive (fantastic) and a Pagani which i need to wear and try out.

I put a watch up for sale and had 2 interested parties. One offered me £5.5k and I was waiting for the other to make an offer. I was flying away so just decided to take the first offer and get it over with.

A week or so later whilst on holiday, the other person emailed me offering £6.1k 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

Early 2022, after getting my bonus I wanted a Ball Marvelight Caring edition. They had a 43mm and a 40mm version from an Online AD. I didn’t have a taste in sizes yet and thought why not go bigger. I bought the 43. When it arrived I was so excited I didn’t take my time before and immediately sized it to my wrist. About an hour later I was really disliking how big it was and wished I got the 40mm. I had instant regret and since I sized it I couldn’t return it. The AD did offer to buy it back to make things right but it was a lost so I decided to keep it for another year hoping I would change my feeling for it. Never happened and I sold it this year for an even bigger lost.

·

No regrets, just lessons learned from mistakes.

Most of those mistakes come from that phase mid pandemic when I thought I could mod watches after watching a gazillion videos.

I learned that I shouldn’t do more than bracelet and bezel swaps.

At least the watches I trashed were sub $100 Seikos.

bloody hell, can you imagine sitting with both in your hands and thinking i cant decide, i think 43mm is fine on my wrist as I've had 45.5mm and also a 52mm which was slightly too big but managed to pull it off as it was a UBOAT! i think for most people 38-40mm is the perfect size. sorry to hear about this encounter, i hope it hasn't ruined the watch experience for you 🙏

I made some loss on stocks back in 2015 due to some reckless day trading. I then decided to buy myself a watch to remind myself to never make the same mistake again.

I bought this limited edition Speedmaster brand new at approximately 50% off from an AD's clearance sale. Since then, I went everywhere and did everything with that watch on.

Image

Fast forward to 2021, I somehow became aware of the second hand price of this watch and decided to put this up for sale. Eventually sold it for a 164% profit.

I miss that watch; I did not need to sell it for any particular purpose. I regret selling it.

proper mathematics there even adding the 164% profit into it 👍 great story

i need to see both the watch and the bike, wow what a crazy swap 👍

Swapped for

The bike was lovely, but a money pit & I got a brand new Triumph Speed Twin 1200 to replace it.

Watch runs pretty accurate and one of my favourites 😁👍

I'd love to ride a bike one day, maybe my 50th! lovely watch 😀

I sold a Sinn 836. I really want it back.

Bell & Ross in pics/on paper aren't particularly special, but in hand they are oh so nice. While their specs are similar to much cheaper watches, on wrist there is something about them that definitely feel high end. Hard to describe but worth checking out.

·

Not buying a 16570 back in 2016.

·

I have only one thing I regret to this day and that is selling my Favre-Leuba Mercury Big Date, the only watch I’ve ever sold. Still thinking about this one from time to time. I believe the chance to get one again is very slim.

I've sold a lot of watches, I don't really regret any of it. The only minor regret I have is that when I decided that the Hulk i owned wasn't for me, it only sold for a minor premium...if I had only gotten tired of it 6 months later, I could have doubled my money. 😜

My nephew arranged to buy a Hulk from a seller he met on line, probably at the height of the market. He never told me the price but Hulks in mint condition full set were priced at 37-40k cad two summers ago in Canada. Fortunately for my nephew the seller never showed up, the meeting was a cop shop front desk.

No regrets. Yes, I sold a few things in the past I probably should not have sold. If I really wanted those items back I could just do a search and repurchase them.

I don’t tend to sell, and that’s probably my biggest regret. Almost all my watches have a story that’s important to me. So my issue is good display space.

Ditto, lol!

·

I've regretted nearly everything I sold in my twenties from my PS2 to my BC Rich warlock. Rare samurai DVDs, comics, all my fiction, no one will take your ww2 books btw, you'll just die with them.

Don't think I could part with my collection, but I'm not in the deeper end of the pool so I can't really speculate when it comes to owning an omega. Just don't sell anything and you won't be filled with the dread.

·

My collection is fairly affordable at just over $1k. All the watches I own I love, and regret none of.

However, I do wish I'd taken more time to know each watch before the next purchase. I spent $200 (which to some is nothing) on 3 watches quite rapidly, to quickly get that 3 watch boxes ticked.

All three watches I got are great, so I regret the action not the outcome, if that makes sense

·

Buying lots of "cheaper" watches instead of saving for nicer watches. Also not putting much thought into my collection. Getting many watches that filled the same space because I "liked" them instead of being more thoughtful.

·

So far I’ve learned that tastes change as one evolves. Enjoy the ride. I have my own regrets but watches are a luxury and we’re in it for the fun.

·

second hand for the GMT, i wish i'd kept it!
