What makes you choose your watch?

Hello watch friends! 🙏

What makes you choose a brand? And do some of you stick to THAT brand.

Is it advertising, a brand ambassador, family influences, something else.

I’ve just watched Interstellar and the #hamilton brand are heavily used. I absolutely love the 38mm Murph. That watch is on my HIT LIST. But not because of the film, I’d seen this watch a long time before the film.

For me choosing a brand the advertising and brand ambassadors haven’t played a part at all, example F1 and the #tag Monaco blue dial ONLY (the one I want 🙏) I’ve loved that watch for years and it wasn’t anything to do with F1, same with the #tudor brand and the new brand ambassador David Beckham, love him or hate him (I love him) he’s been a big part of my life for 20+ years watching football and following his fashion and hairstyles. I bought a Tudor FXD, but not because of him.

What’s your thoughts? Subliminal text, subconsciously see something but don’t think about it. But then buy it and think Why?

So is it down to taste, seeing the watch in a window of a shop and thinking “I WANT THAT!” For me I can’t quite put my finger on it fully. 🤯

Thank you Ben

For me design, history and accuracy. Not influenced by ambassadors.

But the first expensive watch I bought, when I really knew nothing about watches, was a Tag. And that would have been due to decades old marketing, as I was aware that Tag was a "good" watch.

Something that shows you how influential that can be is that I also thought Omega was nothing special- an enthusiast told me that they had tried to enter the mid market a long time ago, and that had evidently stuck in my mind. A quick visit to the boutique and the prices showed me how wrong I was!

Now I know better of course, and I choose carefully. No repeats so far. Maybe a second IWC at some point as I really love their designs. Then again, maybe a second Laco as ditto...

Brand ambassadors put me off mostly. Maybe coz I'm old I don't want to be associated with most of them. I'm an Omega fan, so James Bond is ok, but Eddie Redmayne .. 😟

Sports sponsorship the same - if I don't like the sport , then the sponsor is not on the list - eg I dislike both F1 and Rolex, but love the Olympics

For me history and heritage are a big pull, which is why microbrands do very little for me.

The watch world is wide enough rather than sticking to one brand. I used to have a few Seikos but now only down to one. The space that Seiko used to occupy is now filled with micros. No ambassadors or ads. Just like them for what they are.

I discovered Breitling oddly when I purchased an AP RO Perpetual and eventually a few Brequet watches from the same agent many years ago. Over the years, I have investigated many different brands but did decide to remain outside of Rolex despite the fact that I still own quite a large number of vintage bubble backs.

History, design and to be honest ambassadors 😅 but only for the Omega SMP300 aka the 90s James Bond watch ;)

·

I choose my watch because I set up a few perimeters and bought the first watch that met all of them 😃

They included

  • Size

  • Crystal

  • Movement

  • Bracelet

  • Dial

  • Date position

  • WR

And a few others 😄

Got a calc Casio in 95, still works! Then I went to gshock for solar and mb6, and then Seiko and timex! I may get a citizen but nothing I like with their busy dials ! I do perfect accuracy and functionality above glitz and bling or brand!!!

Anything that takes my fancy 🤷‍♂️

I go by dial, design, case diameter, history and movement. I am not influenced by Brand Ambassadors, however I might be influenced by a watch reviewer.
