I LOVE GOLD (in Goldmember’s voice)

I have an interesting topic to discuss. What are your opinions on imitation gold watches or exploring alternatives like bronze (before it tarnishes)?

I'm intrigued by the concept of a gold sports watch paired with a short-sleeve shirt during summer. However, I admit I'm not in a position to afford a genuine one. I considered imitation gold watches (prx) and found them appealing, although they lack authenticity. While I admire the pristine appearance of the Oris initially, I dislike how it ages and becomes tarnished over time.

As I contemplate retirement plans for the next 30 years, I'm curious about others' experiences with imitation gold and bronze watches. Additionally, I'm interested in hearing about genuine gold watches that are affordable alternatives.

Gold Prx is a go for the summer. Icy

What about a nice Citizen Tsuyosa?

Jeans, white t-shirt, sneakers, gold watch - perfect. 🎯

Go big! get the 2 watches literally no one else will ever get 😁

The Oris should be excluded from this, because it’s bronze.

I don’t mind goldplated watches under $1000, but after that point it becomes not as OK

Wise made this. My hubby has been eying it.

Does gold plating count as imitation or real?

Go for it….

Shits and giggles...

Most watches you see that are gold are probably not even gold plated.

You have example and price that’s plated?

Damn man. Just looked at your page. Your style is fly! Love the collection.

I love vintage gold plated watches. The plating was much thicker in those days (I've seen some as high as eighty microns) so they can be polished a little more than their modern counterparts. Imitation gold or gold plating/filling does wonders for us, as so many watches are gold plated these days that one can feel a lot more secure walking around with some solid gold pieces on wrist.

I’m not cool enough to wear that. So sick tho

I bought a golden Casio A700 because I thought it was fun and tacky. It has picked up so many micro scratches but who cares.

·

I wouldn't wear either . Both are trying too hard to flash money that you either have or don't in people's faces . Plus I don't think wearing gold is masculine . Also my religion doesn't allow men to put on gold jewelry.

·

I only love some gold colored watches and really don’t care if it’s real gold, plated or gold PVD.. looks the same to me. I feel like to me it’s more about the style they achieve and not the material they’re worth..

But sometimes they tend to look a little grandpa-ish to me from time to time. But paired with a cool dial like my brew it can look amazing!

Gold-tone or gold-platted watches are just fine with me. Obviously, I prefer fully gold watches with fully gold bracelets, but I'm open to them all - including bronze and gold/bronze.

Let's look at a few for fun...

I cannot find (or afford) this one in its original 18k gold state with the 18k gold bracelet...but I did not hesitate a beat to pick up the gold-tone version with the gold-tone bracelet...just gorgeous...

Image

There are some excellent mid-century 1950s/60s watches in gold-tone or gold-plated...here is a fine one...

Image

Even modern inexpensive examples, like this Timex, look fantastic in gold-tone...

Image

...or the Tissot "Banana" in gold-tone...

Image

So, in conclusion, while I definitely enjoy wearing these...

...I'm also fine wearing gold-tone or gold-plated...

...because I love gold!

Imitation gold watches are, to me, akin to fake Chinese Rolex watches. The gold coating will eventually wear off or tarnish and then they just look like what they are...fake gold. Not a fan.

But that's just ME! If you like 'em, rock 'em! The only person who has to like (or LOVE) your watch is YOU!

Bronze is cool, but you’d be “resetting it” often.

I have real gold, bronze, and vintage plated gold. In a sports watch I think the PRX and rubber combo is the best modern style you’ll get. The plated or rolled vintage stuff looks pretty good, but even it tarnishes. There genuinely is no direct replacement for a solid gold piece regarding looks or feel.

If you want the look and fit without the premium price or associated risk and softer metal concern or even weight of a gold sports watch, def something like the PRX will suit you better and you won’t consistently be cleaning it or polishing it.

The gold tone of bronze is enough for me in a lot of settings though, even two tone is nice or just some gold colored hour markers and hands, all personal about the style and vibe you like and are going for. Plenty of options these days.

I will say my bronze has plateaued and not tarnishing much more and it’s been in fresh and salt water, on the wrist for soccer practice, days at Disney with the kids and to work and on hunting trips. I’ll wear it before my “good sports watch” due to the other being a tad more delicate.

Gold PRX is 👍👍

Gold is awesome, definitely give it a go. The vintage market has some real stunners. First picture is a GP Seiko Lord Matic, circa early 1970

Thank you for the amazing info. What’s the ref on that Rolex?

Yes to the color gold.

The gold PRX is the only PRX I like.

I forget the exact ref#, I’ll check the lugs later, it’s a 31mm quickset sapphire believe it or not from late 80s/early 90s. It wa any grandfather’s gifted to me for college graduation by him.
