Can someone buy that watch! Please!

I don’t need another watch. Still I find myself go through my listings sorted from the cheapast to the most expensive on Chrono24. Most of the times nothing happens. But once in a while something pops up. A stunning watch that hits me. Now the thrilling, but painful, process starts again. There is a couple of possible scenarios. First, the initial interest fades off quite quickly.  That is the most common scenario. Now and then it doesn’t go away. My lust over this watch continue to itch.

Most of the times I find the the asking price too high. Apparently others are thinking the same and the watch is unsold. To help me pull the trigger C24 has a couple of demons installed. One is that I can mark an object so I very easy can go back to the add and remind myself of the beautiful watch. Another is the mail from C24 saying that this particular watch now is gaining a lot of attention and might soon be gone.

I know for sure that I don’t need another watch. Except maybe this one. It is too expensive for sure. In my head I start to process a number, a price, I consider justified. If offered this price I would add another watch to the collection. Have I got this far I know what will happen. If I can’t get the watch out of my mind I’ll wait. I wait long enough to sence that the seller might be ready for an offer. If the gap between the asking price and my figure is wide I have to wait longer. But I know now that I will contact the seller with a nice mail and present my offer. Surprisingly often there is an agreement. Or the watch simply disappears from the listings. Some enthusiast found the asking price fair, or they was just quicker to present an offer. And thank God for that! The watch is gone and you can’t do anything about. Disappointment but also great relief. Did I say I don’t need another watch. In a couple of weeks, or month, there is another watch creating that itch again.

The struggle is real.

Sometimes it's nice to dream about watches. I know the difference between when I'm really serious about wanting a watch vs a temporary infatuation.

Try not to get swayed too much by the app's nudges - it's designed to give you fomo. Who cares if people are looking at the same watch. Unless you're looking for a super rare piece, it's okay to let that one go.

·

Probably the correct way to handle it. But WC is not a safe harbour. A fellow cruncher show their fantastic piece and suddenly you have a new made searchlist on C24.

No my pieces is not rare. Just iterations of common watches that I like and fall for. And there are plenty of of the out there. For the demons it’s probably just my own searches that generates them.

Good luck fighting lady temptation. (As an aside, old sayings frequently seem a bit sexist in hindsight). Sorry to any ladies out there. I tried to strike it out, but can't on mobile.

Vintage watch collecting was too intense frustrating for me, actually was a sizeable roadblock to being a proper husband and dad to my two young daughters. For me the shift to modern watches saved me and allowed a pacific experience with my hobby that bothers no one especially me. I still have dark memories about a deeply curved Gruen Curvex watch that created strained relationship with a friend, mentor but fellow vintage watch collector also. My Curvex watch had an untampered black dial that was much favoured but I refused to sell a watch that I liked but not adored.

·

Ah the old irrestible urge just to have a look, then the irrestible urge to research it, then the irrestible urge to moon about it, then the irrestible urge to make the offer (please someone else buy it and put me out of my misery) then the irrestible urge to actually buy it.... you know the cure. But it's just so irrestible (feel your pain).

Aah, then you might release me from this temptation on this one👍

Oh, that seems too serious. It should be just fun. I also find new watches more age appropriate. With those you could plan and take it slow.

No but in the single hunt you are a lone ranger.

·

Yea, total crap probably aka bad tier.

The only way to get rid of temptation is to yield to it. Or the desire will fester and taint your joy. Or something to that effect. Oscar Wilde must have been a watch collector.

Apparently that is my go to approach🤓

I do it all the time

·

I go back to the collection and try to find all the ways the object of my desire is superfluous given what I already have. I mean, it doesn't always work, but I give it the ol' college try...

Me too, but I can always find a unique usp promoting the next one👍

And to think I was gonna reach out to you for some advice on how to get started on my first vintage piece.

I think you may actually need help not another watch. You have it all, show some selfcontrol!!

What’s that C24 item code for that omega? 😂

I saw a Zodiac super seawolf for $800cad on Facebook marketplace and passing that deal up was so damn difficult lol. But was probably the right thing to do

That's pretty cheap, haha. But, the right decision is the right decision.

·

I know this exact feeling! I do wish that chrono24 did keep the sales post open after the sale for the sake of having the information available.

Yeah... but the seller was also being weird and was pressuring me into impulse buying it basically. It was way too suspicious.

Man, I have this problem myself. I just get into marketplace, open search bar, type "vintage" and then it's a hour long session of practicing temperance.

One dude is selling Polerouter. The watch was on a listing for a couple of months now. He also listed it on a local auction site but never ever someone bid more than a reserve price. I know that the more we wait, the reserve is gonna be less and less. The price is fair now, but nobody's willing to jump on it. And so I thought to myself - right, next month I'm taking my pay check and making an offer. I'm ready, yeah, whatever.

My buyer rating was too low to make an offer. THANK GOD.

It’s quite a thrilling waiting game. A real chicken race without anybody getting real hurt.
