2 schools of thought…

After being on this app for a few weeks, I have observed that there are 2 distinct schools of thought on here (for the average collector). Camp 1 - buy 60 “homage” pieces (bunch of “sports models” that look like the Submariner or Royal Oak). Camp 2 - the person who bought those one or two watches which they saved up for by not buying multiple watches. Not saying one is right and one is wrong. It’s just an interesting observation. I have to admit, I may be a hybrid of these 2 (which I guess is a third category)

Camp 3. (Who are you calling camp?) I bought a Seiko SKX years ago. I've since bought some other Seiko divers. 😀 👍

·

I'm camp 2 with more than one or two.

·

You haven't been here long enough.

You're missing about 100 other "camps'

·

I'm in both camps, I've two homage pieces in my 12 collection. One a homage to the AP Royal Oak and the other being an IWC Ingenieur homage. I wanted to see if the IWC would be a good fit.

·

I'm somewhere in between. Sure, I probably have 20 homage watches, and 30 other random watches, but I also have a couple nice ones. I get enjoyment out of each philosophy.

·

I definitely get your observation but those camps seem more like ends of a spectrum. I’m in the middle ground here. A couple Seikos and micro brands with interesting style. I can spot the influence of iconic watches in other designs. That doesn’t necessarily make them homages.

·

I'd agree, to an extent. Because there's a big third category that doesn't include homages or the "real" thing. My Mr Jones isn't trying to be anything other than what it is. My Spinnaker Boettger isn't trying to be a Submariner. My Longines Master Collection takes inspiration only from the Longines back catalogue.

It's not that I'm anti homage, it's that I like a style of watch that isn't often reproduced.

Do you have the quartz or auto “Beam me up?” Thinking of getting the auto due to larger case size. Thanks!

Quartz. I'm tempted to swap to the mechanical, it would be a much better site for me, but realistically it's expenditure I could throw on something else. I like setting my mechanicals to the second and with the mechanical Beam Me Up that wouldn't be possible.

Camp 5 - vintage bargain hunters who come out in hives at anything made after 1997…

Camp 6 - buys anything, anywhere…

Camp 1' Camp 2 🤔

I’d like to remain Campless 😁

·

Camp 2 for me. I only buy a watch every 18-24 months and I usually sell 2-3 in between. My collection continues to dwindle.

·

I agree 👍🏽 and also joined recently. I'm also between the two. I own "expensive" watches but I also own cheaper watches that l really like. However these cheaper watches are most of the time known brands like Seiko, Casio or Swatch. I enjoy discovering microbrands from this site.

Wow!!! This is an incredible collection of pocket watches!

I have a few ‘cheaper’ micro brands like Helm and Marloe and a couple of expensive ones: two Rolex and nothing in between! I saved for my GMT Master and purchased it about 8 years ago. I loved it so much it was my only watch for years. Then I looked into some micro brands-I wasn’t in the position to purchase another luxury watch-so have bought some less expensive pieces(which I enjoy just as much as my Rolex’s)

Camp 3: buy something different. The herd and hype watches leave me feeling hollow, be they homages or hyper-pricey.

I buy unfashionable vintage stuff. Small dress watches. Yellow gold. Jewelry and department store brand watches housing top quality Swiss movements. Pocket watches. Watches with technologically interesting movements - bumper automatics, micro rotors, bidirectional winding, early waterproof cases. Garish 70s stuff. Two tone 80s neo-vintage etc. Nice watches with interesting inscriptions - weddings, birthdays, retirements.

When I first started collecting, I decided that I'd never spend more than $150 on a watch. Personally, I cannot justify spending more than that on a hobby. Yes I could probably sell all my watches and buy 1 high dollar 'grail' watch but that wouldn't satisfy the itch to collect.

When I see a watch that catches my attention, I research the hell out of it. If I can't stop thinking about it, I then start saving up to buy it.

I admittedly own an obscene amount of watches. Each one has a story or some detail/design that makes it stand apart from the others. Maybe one day I'll get over this obsession and close out this hobby. Until then I will I stand proudly waving the flag for Camp 15.

Also, I refuse to buy a Seiko. Don't kill me lol

What makes you refuse seiko?

What makes you refuse seiko?

In my opinion, with Seiko, your really just paying for that name on the watch. Also.....there must be a villain in every story lol

·

There’s a camp out here 1 or 2 with fakes! No surprise we got them all here.

This is funny because…it’s true.

The homage pieces (takes a piece of something else and tries to make it their own), I have no problem with. But, the pure copies. SMH.

True,once upon a time the seiko name meant something,reliability at a good price.Now I don’t think they’re that great.
