I have the BB36 and really like it. I think it's an often overlooked piece in the Tudor catalog. In my mind, one's choice in this case would primarily depend on which dial appeals to you more, your preferred style, and in what situations you would be wearing it. The quality of build and the movement of both rate very high in my book. They wouldn't sway me one way or the other as much.
I have a BB36, and I really like it. The Ranger wasn't available when I purchased my BB36. I know the Ranger is a bit polarizing, but it would have been a difficult choice for me to make. I'm no help.
I have a real BB36 (blue), and a San Martin Ranger (black w/ faux lume)... I much prefer the dial and hands on the BB36.
I've said this in other threads, but I think the BB36 looks kinda boring in pictures, but great on the wrist. The 36mm Rolex Explorer is the opposite for me, that 369 looks awesome under macro but underwhelming in person.
I have the Ranger and love it. Extremely comfortable watch. I also prefer the all brushed look and feel. I can be care free when wearing it which matters to me. Also, the movement is really solids and preforms great. It has all the understated that I like.
David Beckham approves the Ranger. He is awesome... Helvetica is awesome... If you don't like fonts then it is a BB for you. That's Lady Gaga wearing a Black bay looking kick ass, but I can't go out wearing so much mascara so I can't honestly vote for a BB.
My opinion is that the ranger offers you more value then the BB 36 due to the upgrades on the bracelet. For me this would probably be the deciding factor. As for dail I like the 36 better but I think the ranger offers a different vibe then what I have in my collection of tudors.

BB36. I have it in black so I’m a little biased. I absolutely love it.

The Ranger is what I would go for.
Black Bay 36 in black is on my wrist almost every day. Love it! The lustrous black lacquer dial is just gorgeous.
