Can’t decide on a dive watch

Hi fellow watch lovers!

I’m looking to add a dive watch to my collection. Their look and feel really appeal to me, even though I am not a diver. Now I’m torn between two options;

This orient kamasu and this citizen promaster diver.

I feel like my heart wants the citizen, but my head wants the orient. I love the red dial on the orient, it has a sapphire crystal and is an automatic. On paper it seems like the better watch and one I would enjoy for years to come.

I also really like the blue citizen dial, seems a bit more fitting for a diver too, and the promaster diver is just a proper dive watch. For some unexplainable reason it just speaks to me. However, I have no experience with citizen or the eco drive movements, and the snob in me leans towards automatic watches.

I’m leaning towards the citizen, but I thought I would see if anyone on watch crunch would have something to add to weigh in on my decision, like personal experience, insights, etc.

Have a great day!

That red dial does look gorgeous when the light hits it especially! I’m still very torn between the two.. thanks for the insight!

Buy what you love the most. You really cant go wrong here. Both are outstanding watches. If you are really split 50/50 on making a choice I'd say this... You see Citizen watches everywhere. They can be and are found in every department store in every mall and in many jewelry store. They are ubiquitous and you will see them on people's wrists everywhere. The Orient Kamasu however is just the opposite. If you see one of them in the wild there is a VERY GOOD chance the owner is a fellow enthusiast. I kind of like that.

I own alot of Orient and just as many Citizen though so either way, enjoy!

·

Both are excellent. I own a Promaster Diver and the build quality is awesome as an ISO diver.

The Orient is a watch I always look at and question why I don’t own one yet.

·

If you plan to wear it in rotation with your other watches, do yourself a favour and buy the Citizen. The convenience of quartz, and reliability of Eco-Drive would likely make the Citizen your grab-and-go watch.

I am very much split 50/50. I’ll probably eventually end up owning both. I think the department store side of citizen is what is holding me back slightly, but then is that just enthusiast snobbery.. what a great problem to have though! Thanks for your insight!

I think this summarizes it pretty well. I feel like I’m slightly leaning towards the citizen, but then I feel like ill still always look at the orient and ask myself why I don’t own that watch..

I appreciate your comment!

Ian very curious about the eco drive. I have a casioak and it has quickly become my go to for daily wear just because of the convenience, so you have a good point there! Thanks for the insight!!

Buy both in the long term but get the Kamasu first. As others have said it is the enthusiasts watch which makes it cooler. I have three orient divers and several citizen eco drives ( not divers) and both makes are great and reliable.

Love my Kamasu!

I feel like it is definitely a which one should I get now, I’ll get the other one at a later date.

The red dial on the kamasu might be too hard to pass on, red I my favorite color.

Thanks for the comment!

Just to reiterate, I've bought citizens...in Macy's! There is no shame in it. I'm just pointing out if you buy the Orient, you go the road less travelled.

I have the teal kamasu but I think the red is even nicer to be fair!

If you want an automatic, get the Orient. The red dial version looks beautiful and it is a great value for the price. Good movement, sapphire crystal and the dimensions are more nicer with the Kamasu.

Citizen promaster if you want a quartz in your collection. Eco-drive solar movement is great, reliable and nothing to worry. Citizen dive watches are on the larger side so just make sure the dimensions fit you. You loose out out on the sapphire crystal but the stock bracelet on the citizen is quite good compared to the Orient.

This is my 20+ year old Citizen Aqualand that has served me nearly flawlessy for all that time. I did replace the capacitor a few months ago, but that only cost me about $20.00 so I think that is a pretty good record. You can't go wrong with most Citizens.

·

I would say Orient but then again as an owner of 4 orients you could say I’m biased, the citizen looks a lovely watch. HOWEVER just to throw a spanner in the works….. have you considered the Casio Duro wonderful diver for the money.

·

There is no wrong answer as both will do the job. Most here are biased towards mechs but enjoy the electric squirrel cages too.

·

If it was me then my thinking would run as follows … for all the reasons you describe the Orient is a great choice and, among the Orient catalogue, it is probably the most compelling reason to add an Orient to your collection (unless you are a dress watch fan in which case the Bambino comes into play). There will - down the road - be many other good reasons to add a Citizen to your collection (e.g. tough field watch - in blue if you like, radio controlled, Navihawk, chronograph, etc., etc.).

In terms of red watches too, there aren’t many that make a compelling case for themselves but that Orient is right up there in terms of rocking a red dial.

Orient Pros: It’s more wearable due to smaller dimensions, sapphire crystal and a better date complication. Plus it’s automatic.

Orient Cons: The bracelet could stand to be better but easily replaceable.

Citizen Pros: ISO certified and it’s eco-drive

Citizen Cons: It’s size and its quartz.

Full disclosure, I have that exact Promaster and while it’s nice, I’m actually looking to sell it.

Thanks for the insight! What are your reasons for the sale if you don’t mind me asking?

I’ll probably end up just getting the duro instead as I can’t make my mind up😂

Not at all! I just find it too big for my 6.5” wrist. If it was 41mm or less it would be significantly better.

Stylistically, it’s also more modern than my current tastes like. I’m more of a fan of the retro-inspired dive watches like the Baltic and the SPB143

Fair enough, my wrist is a bit bigger so might be a better fit! Thanks for the info!

That Orient is pretty fantabulous.

That’s the great thing about the duro, you can just get them all😂

·

I lean toward the Citizen but the Orient's value and looks are amazing

·

I think that both are good my advise is what do you prefer quartz or mechanical watch I love mechanical watch so I'll go for the orient as for it's the best value for having a good automatic watch (full in-house movement)
