Gifting a watch

My friend is venturing over seas to a family event, he doesn’t wear a watch however he frequently comments on mine, so I think he’s open to the idea.

So what I’m looking for is a versatile (preferably GMT) watch with at least 100m water resistance, it  has to be around 38 or below nothing over 40. I have a budget of €175.

It can be digital, analogue or what I’m thinking about is an ani digi. If anyone has any ideas there greatly appreciated.

Thanks

A Timex Expedition like this:

Image

Is perfect for travel and can be had for $50-75 CAD on Amazon.

-100M WR

-40mm

-Two time zones

-thin

-Indiglo

-large easy to read display

It also has the advantage of being a pretty subdued colour, so it doesn't draw unnecessary attention to itself.

Didn’t think about one of them, their a bit hard to find In Europe though.

They seem to come and go, but I have found them online regularly. I've been wearing a version of this model since the 90s, and absolutely love them.

What about this one?

I’m strongly considering one.

what is your friends destination?

What watches is he complimenting? I would try to align the pick with something he seems to like. Note, a watch can be a personal decision. If he likes your Tudor, you can get him the Invicta Pro Diver or an Orient.

Good list here

Ok - GMT under/around £200 is tricky but here goes (bear with me):

Image

Timex Q GMT reissue. Popular; Timex are on a roll.

Image

Geckota Sea Hunter GMT. Does have some other colours. Looks cool, I have to admit, but I am unfamiliar with them.

Image

Citizen have this more field watch orientated Eco Drive GMT on offer at lots of places for around £200. It’s a Citizen Eco Drive, it’s reliable and well made.

New Timex Waterbury GMT. This version is all steel, others have gold accents and crowns. Not sure I like this but Timex are popular again.

If you want to get an ani-digi in that price range why not a bluetooth casioak. You won’t be able to get a metal one but a GA-b2100 would land easily there. The bluetooth would also mean it would sync up to his phone ensuring constant accurate time.
Or if that’s a bit big maybe the fully digital GW-b5600. Same thing but in a smaller fully digital package.

What about a good old Casio Wave Ceptor. They have numerous models and vary in price depending on the model and the material used. I had one for the very same reason, to use a travel watch, solar powered, so no changing batteries, atomic sync and the list goes on. From $98 AUD to $98 USD in the limited search I made on eBay.

I owned the second in the list until my son got hold of it.

looks at everyone's recommendations

Yeah, if your friend likes analog I'd say go for the Timex. If not, go for the Casios or one of those multi-band/bluetooth quartz for accurate time.

If he don't mind fiddling the crown, go for one of Citizen's ec-drive.

Lots of Casio recommendations. The Casio GW-M5610U has world times, dual times, and all those things you want while travelling like alarm clocks and it's solar so you won't get where you're going and need a watch battery store, and it will set its time automatically via "radio time" in most places. Cheap too. I have one. It's great.

Never thought about a waveceptor. The G shocks would also be a good idea because he’s very active But it might be a bit to rugged. The timexes and edifice are both great ideas as well.

If anyone has any more recommendations let me know now. I’ll let you’s know what I pick.

The price point is the challenge. But....

I know, I know; "homage" is a four letter word. But it's a good looking watch

That being said, automatic watch with a GMT hand and a GMT bezel and 100m of water resistance. 40mm is at the high end of your range. But it's a decent looking watch and Pagani is a "respected" AliExpress watch, whatever that means. This one costs $110US, so, cheap. I think it looks great. If I was working with your budget it would be one to consider.

The Timex might be the best balance of style, price point, name recognition, and features.

Classic metal Casio? Gold or steel depending on skin tone?

Seiko SUR421 is an awesome watch. Comes with a sapphire crystal and 100m water resistance at 39.4mm diameter and super thin 7.9mm thickness. Also the lug width is 20mm which is pretty good for finding awesome after market straps or bracelets. List price is 199EUR but probably you can easily find one at your up-most budget. For example here in Amsterdam seiko shop they always make a great discount around 10-15%.

PS: It is also screw-down crown which also means that it is a completely swim-safe water resistant.

Consider this? It’s digital and has tough solar. Wears small on the wrist too. 200m WR and has world time. Tough and rugged.
