My Three Watch Collection - SOTC

In the past I have always kept myself to a five piece watch collection. But recently I noticed how this was still too many for me to actually get full enjoyment out of all of them. So I consolidated a few pieces into a Tudor Pelagos FXD and now finally have my ideal 3 watch collection.

Image

Tudor Pelagos FXD: The ultimate dive watch. I was lucky enough to find the desirable MN21 and am extremely happy I decided to go for it. It’s the watch I’ll wear while getting dive certified next year and on my desert road trip through Namibia! Wears a lot smaller than you’d expect.

Image

IWC Mark XV: My favourite out of the Mark series with its 38mm case and RAF style hands. The perfect GADA and about as dressy a watch I’ll ever need when put on a leather strap.

Image

IWC Pilot’s Chronograph Spitfire: Purchased on my birthday while on a trip in South Africa, it’s my most sentimental watch. These chronographs by IWC are the reason I fell in love with the brand.

Very happy to answer any questions regarding the watches!

What’s your ideal watch collection size? And which models would/does it consist of?

Lovely collection.

Thanks a lot!

Beautiful and classy collection. Which of these do you consider your "knock around watch"? Id rock ALL of those often, but would be scared to wear them in some of my more rough activities!

Very, very, very nice 👍

Thank you! The Mark XV on a nato can basically take anything you throw at it, the size helps it not to get in the way.

Might be the perfect 3 watch collection.

Might be the perfect 3 watch collection.

Took me a few years and many watches to get to this point. But currently for me this is the perfect 3 watch collection!

·

Super nice trio, love how you collect!👍

·

Nice, enjoy your watches!

·

Beautiful collection!

·

That’s an awesome collection in my opinion having a five plus collection is still excellent.

·

I love that you got your collection down to 3. I'm a big fan of IWC and especially the chrono. That is an outstanding watch. Is big but it wears so well. Congrats. Wear them all with a smile.

·

Appreciate the #iwc love!

·

I desperately wish IWC would go back to 38mm for their mark series.

·

Nice collection! You definitely have a "style". Now, for your next watch, can you get a watch without a triangle at 12?? 😅

IWC is probably my favourite watch brand, the chronos wear better than I had expected.

Thanks! I’m afraid that’s never an option for me haha.

I'm going to have to get one. I just need to figure out if I'm going the Portuguese or the Portofino.

What an amazing collection congratulations dude 👏🏽 Btw what’s your wrist size? The Pelagos FXD looks right on spot.

If I could only have 3 watches I would go with GS SLGA015G, IWC Spitfire and Longines Spirit

That is one classy collection!

My ideal collection is also a 3 piece with two GADAs and a solar quartz beater. I currently own a Nomos Ahoi Date, but hoping to add a Tudor North Flag and a JDM G-Shock in the near future.

That sounds like a very solid 3 piece collection!

Thanks a lot man! I have about a 6,7inch - 170cm flat wrist. The FXD wears a lot better than you'd think. I think anyone with a 6,5inch wrist and up could wear it quite easily.

Sound like we have similar taste, I used to own a Spirit and it was such a great watch.

I love the collection! And great spade too! WOE! My question is have you felt the IWC quality has matched the price? The Mark and Chrono series are amazing but they seem $1,000 overpriced. What do you think?

The Mark XV is definitely worth it when you get it on the bracelet.

As for the Spitfire Chronograph at full retail I’d agree it’s pushing it right now. The finishing is amazing and you have to have them in hand to realise the actual quality.

That being said I got mine about 1,5 years ago from a retailer at a 20% discount before the big price hikes. At that price it was fully worth it. Would I pay the full retail price for it right now? Probably not.

Thanks for the input! And how do you feel the XV has held up? I was looking at the Marks for my first luxury watch but am unsure about an older watch for the purchase.

There's been a few articles on how 90's - early 2000's IWC is excellent value and I'd 100% agree with that. My Mark XV has held up wonderfully and has pretty much ran consistently at +1/2 seconds a day for the past 1,5 years of ownership. I used to own a Mark XVIII before the XV and while the Mark XVIII finishing was slightly finer and more detailed, the build quality feels pretty much the same. I also prefer the ETA based movement as it's well proven and can be maintained quite cheaply and easily.

My search for an everyday watch went as follows over the years: Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical -> Seiko Baby Alpinist -> Longines Spirit -> IWC Mark XVIII -> IWC Mark XV.

While all the others left me wanting more after a few months, the Mark XV has felt perfect for me from day one and I have never felt to urge to replace it or add another everyday watch to the collection since.

The more I see that spitfire…. The more I’m tempted to buy it. It’s a beautiful piece.

·

Super trio - coming from a fellow IWC enthusiast tempted by the FXD! The earlier Mk series really are great, my Mk XVI with the same movement has proved to be utterly reliable despite being heavily used over many years - never considered the bracelet for it though…

Perfection

I like the Tudor, divers have always been favorite type of watch, but that is, of course just my taste yours however is excellent. All three watch's are fine examples of great looking, and very reliable time pieces. Enjoy

I know this post is 6 months old but I came across it since I have an FXD (‘23) and looking at an IWC Spitfire Chronograph (IW3706 tribute). The IWC for me would be more of a daily wear. I have 7.5” wrists.

For your collection, I could see a Santos Medium white dial with strap choices as a formal piece that’s flexible for various occasions. Your Mark XV would still be a great daily, but a santos would close the core collection for you of 4 watches. Anything else is complimentary, or a beater.
