This is a pretty great post. I think the other thing that people miss is associating one country of origin with one level of quality. On a recent watch release, I saw people in other places commenting on how a watch could be so expensive with a made in Hong Kong case. Setting aside many Swiss-made watches from big brands have their cases made in HK, people fail to realize that there are many levels of finishing and varying capabilities of HK suppliers.
Yes, if you want a "dirt cheap" case with the requisite low level of finishing made in HK, you can certainly do that. But you can also have very premium feeling cases made in HK with the requisite increase in price. Are these as expensive as having them made in Switzerland...of course not, but they aren't cheap either. There are also subtleties in polishing and brushing techniques that come at different levels of expense, that people don't necessarily appreciate or potentially have the experience/tools to do so. (noting that it's also hard to appreciate some things without going hands-on with them first.)
Of course, if you don't value some of this stuff, then the extra expenses will only stick out to you as unnecessary, but for those who can/do, we might not like paying extra or it may put something out of our price range, but we can at least understand where it comes from.
