Would you consider a grand seiko

How could you not? And the threshold is only “consider” …

You're implying that Grand Seiko only make spring drive movements, and not 'traditional' mechanical movements

I just pulled the trigger on a (discontinued) SBGN003 to see how good these things really are, and if it might be a cheap means to scratch an obvious and much more expensive orange handed GMT itch..

My initial thoughts are not surprising - as they're mentioned in pretty much every review ever:

  1. They truly are incredibly well made - with fit and finish equal to Rolex.

  2. They are very, very polished - especially the applied indices which sparkle at every angle. This isn't something I love, personally, but will persevere with.

  3. The case shape / lugs weren't much of a consideration during my selection process, but they are really nicely designed.

  4. Though very well executed, the bracelets really need on the fly microadjustment. (Hurry up #steelreef !)

  5. I can imagine moving to spring drive / hi-beat internals would elevate the feel of wearing a GS to at least that which I get from wearing my Rolex. What you lose in brand caché, you gain in incredible movements and aesthetics.

But, I really wish GS made more wearable, low key, spring drive tool watches. With more lume, and less polish.

I think I would rather consider one of Citizen's Chronomasters in this price range and in this category of watches.

·

Maybe the auto or quartz - I would like the spring drive but without the power meter which I personally don’t like

·

Yes. I Love their Automatic watches!

·

Don't have anything against GS, just haven't found a piece that calls to me. GS is known for their high polished dress watches and I am more of a non flashy tool watch kind of guy.

·

I consider GS for Spring Drive quite often - yet have never found a model I liked enough to warrant the price.

·

But it is more than just Spring Drive.

·

Grand Seiko also make real mechanical watches, such as the one in the image you have posted!

Bought one but then sold it a month later. I absolutely despise the crummy bracelets with no microadjust. As a bracelet only guy, if the bracelet stinks then the watch won’t stay.

I also don’t understand the hype on the polishing technique. Cute story on how they do it but honestly doesn’t make it look much better than watches in the same price segment.

No regrets on selling and don’t plan to get another in the future.
