What are somethings you hate about watch collecting.

I know we usually focus on the positives about collecting but what about the negatives?

I’ll start in no particular order as in the way I see the negatives in watch Collecting.

1) To many models to choose from one minute I want a diver the next a Dress Watch the cycle just repeats over and over again.

2) Different case sizes I don’t know rather to wear a midsize or an oversize watch half the time

3) Buying online vs at retail this for me is a hit or miss, I sometimes get better deals at an AD and sometimes online just depends on the model and seller.

4) Hype watches yes we’ve all bought a hype watch or thought of buying one. You finally get it to see what the “Hype” is then a week or two goes by and nothing.

5) Influencers we see someone on YouTube talking about a watch next thing you know someone’s at their AD or online buying said watch the influencer was talking about.

6) impulse buying I’ve probably done this more times I’m afraid to admit.

7) Price this is obviously subjective but to some a $50 Casio Duro is a lot while a $500 Seiko Tuna is considered a lot. I try to stay between that $100-500 price.

Well that’s my list of 7 things I hate about watch collecting.

Your spot on my guy. How about knowing the is never going to be a final watch deep down inside.

There is always going to be the next one just a matter of Time. There is no such thing as an exit watch out there.

For me it’s all the second guessing myself. Is this really what I want, or am I being driven by the hype? Finally, decided to stick to <$500 micro brands that stand out to me as distinctive. I don’t “need” any of the classic collectibles.

The gatekeepers. I loathe people telling others that they aren’t a collector or serious about watches if they don’t have X,Y,or Z brand. It’s maddening.

How about the idea you need dive, dress, sport and beater to have the perfect collection. Maybe I don’t like dress or sport watches. Maybe all I want is dive watches. Maybe I don’t need a beater. Who has the right to tell me what I need for my collection.

·

I hate when "normies" don't notice how awesome my watch is when I'm out in this short sleeve weather!

·

The embarrassment of hindsight, the shame of vanity, and the marketing algorithms and negative attention of others. If i just wanted the perfect break alarm and timer watch I probably should have bought 2 of the 5610 gshock or mb6 lineages or maybe some style variations. I guess you dont know until you know. I am still a big fan of all the things I enjoy about my sincere watch collection and the positiveness of many in this community and others, but that embarrassment, shame, exposure to others whim-guidance do all trouble me.

·

It's when the wife finds out you spent 1500.00 on 3 watches lol

·

Having to explain my watch collection choices only to have the person say their apple watch does more and cost less, or that they could spend $20 at Walmart and get a Casio that does just as much as my collections Casio Oceanus

·

The hype. But its all going to die down soon and the manufacturers will again have trouble selling watches at hyperinflated prices.. already seeing Breitling prices crashing with deep discounts of more than 50%

·

My silly little peeve rant:

I just hate the "three watch collection" .. building the perfect "three watch collection" ... for x amount

Some people have 8, some have 13, some have 25, some are happy with 100. There's no right answer and I'm so over watch forums, youtube, articles keep harping on about "three."

·

Getting motivated to list watches for sale that I either don’t wear anymore, am afraid to wear due to rarity or age, or have fallen out of love with. Hence why I’ve got 35 right now…

Man that lasted forever

Is this a Vostok ad? Couldn't watch it all the way to the end.

·

I hate it when you try to explain that your watch is mechanical and they feel sorry for you bc you can’t afford a “real” watch like a Fossil.

1) Crap about case size, 36 is too small followed immediately check out my vintage 34mm Omega ‘wow looks cool’

2) Hindsight and regret from the impulse purchase

3) Not having enough money to buy the watches you really want and coming to terms that you have compromised

4) Always looking for a bigger watch display case

5) my OCD pippin of trying to sync up all watches in my case 🥴

Oh, god . . . case size people. Some of y'all are no doubt shopping in the delicate boy section of the clothing store (hey, I am too) until you are browsing watches in which case you think you have the forearms of Dwayne Johnson or Jason Momoa or something. Most of you assuredly do not.

·

I only hate one thing: I don’t make enough money for this hobby.

·

I have collected a number of things in my time, and watch collecting is the only sphere I have experienced where even other collectors will tell you that you shouldn't buy too many* watches. There are endless discussions over the perfect 8 watch collection and as soon as anyone posts a picture of a collection of more than 20 watches, there is the inevitable comment of 'you could have bought one luxury piece for the cost of those'. If you enjoy a limit on your collecting - one box, 5 watches, one of each category, etc - then I am happy for you. I love a collection, a variety of watches, selecting what to wear that morning. Sure, I could have one Rolex instead of 25 watches, but honestly I feel that I get more joy from my collection that I would from wearing the same Rolex every day.... and I will buy a Rolex one day in the future as well. We don't have to choose.

·

The worst thing is that first you don't know what you want. Then you start to buy watches and after a while you find out you STILL don't know what you want but you also have too much watches to wear. And it never ends.

Other than that... yeah, it's fun 😊

·

Spot on! To add I hate it when im hunting for a watch and when I actually get it i go “meh…”. Only to realise after acquiring umpteen watches, we are sometimes more addicted to the hunt. 😅

·

Biggest negative… there’s always “Just one more watch” it never ends

yes. How I miss those days 10 years ago when Seikos were so cheap you could buy and roadtest a new one each month, when the watch media was far less professionnal and much more enthusiastic and $ 5k+ watches were still distant dreams.

Now, after having seen a Speedmaster, an Explorer and a few interesting others in my watchbox, some I kept some I sold, the watch addiction becomes less and less fun. I know the thrill of opening the next box is on a declining trend and still, I'm tempted to pull the trigger at least once a week, and then breathe deeply to regain control.

A wise decision would be to unsubscribe from most or all watch media, but I just can't.

·

I have never believed my watch habit was a problem, after a short period during my younger years of not being financially responsible, I managed to develop some maturity but I think that watch collecting can be similar to quite a number of regrettable events that carry unanticipated momentum. In the beginning an entry level luxury watch might appear expensive but as the enthusiast’s appetite for more compelling examples of horology expands, the cost also increases until spending an egregious amount becomes commonplace. I might offer my most recent purchase as a personal example, I am no fan of the Omega moon watch but have always liked and wanted the DSOM iteration, for a long time also did not feel the MSRP was coherent to the physical item. Recently watches have become even more expensive, I think in part due the massive growth in interest during recent years and also supply chain issues due to a global pandemic. That DSOM was a very inflated price when I decided to finally source my own, was an additional 2k cad mere months later when some arrived in my regular ad’s showroom. I was aghast but still pulled out my credit card to pay for the watch. I am trying very hard to develop a feeling of buyer’s remorse but up till the writing of this have failed.

For me - I can only wear one watch at a time! I have so many that I want to wear all the time. Annoying to have to pick one - but also a pleasure to chose “the one” for the day!

·

After being in this hobby for quite a few decades now, I’ve learned to embrace different things, being watch case sizes, materials used and designs. You have to learn to put yourself into that particular watch at that particular time. Some days I wear a very small 1920s watch and other days I wear a 44mm Panerai. Embrace all sizes, if you wrist can handle it.

That commercial was like buying a single SD card from Amazon and it comes in a three foot box full of packing peanuts. So MUCH padding for so little product.

This commercial is what happens when people start buying dive straps that cost as much as a watch.
