Behind the Brilliance: The Rolex Approach to Selecting Timeless Diamonds

Perhaps I've been struck by Goldgious Fever again, as I find myself unable to part with this watch! There's something undeniably special about Rolex's Everose gold—it has a unique ability to shimmer and captivate, even under the dull light of an overcast sky. The hour markers radiate with a beauty that only diamonds can achieve, enhancing the watch's allure with their brilliant sparkle.

Image

I've never been particularly drawn to diamonds, considering myself a novice in this field. Typically, my knowledge was limited to the basics of color, cut, and clarity, without a deep understanding of each grade's significance. That changed yesterday during a visit to my local authorized dealer, where I had the opportunity to examine a large 5-carat natural diamond under a loupe for the first time. It was an eye-opening experience to see the myriad inclusions that natural diamonds contain, which are only absent in the highest grades of internally flawless or flawless diamonds.

Image

As someone who values perfection and tends to avoid imperfections in expensive, shiny objects, one might assume I'd naturally lean towards the higher grades, like very slightly included (VSI) to very, very slightly included (VVSI), or even internally flawless to flawless diamonds. Observing the imperfections in an SI1 or SI2 graded diamond made me initially dismissive, thinking, 'I definitely don't want that quality of diamond.' However, the realization that even a diamond I considered 'lesser' could command a price of $60,000 was astonishing. This experience significantly broadened my understanding and appreciation of natural diamonds. I'm currently weighing the benefits of upgrading to an internally flawless or even a VVSI grade diamond. The dramatic increase in price associated with these higher grades has me questioning the value of such an “investment”.

Then, my sales associate introduced a four-carat, lab-grown diamond, graded as VSI, which appeared practically flawless-only a couple small inclusions. Yet, its price was a mere $6,000!!—a stark contrast to its natural counterparts. This disparity in cost was eye-opening, highlighting that one could end up paying at least ten times more for a natural diamond with similar color and clarity. In fact, for a natural diamond of equivalent clarity, the price could well exceed tenfold. This revelation truly underscored the significant price difference between natural and lab-grown diamonds.

Image

Rolex is renowned for its uncompromising commitment to quality, which extends to every aspect of their timepieces, especially the diamonds they select. The brand exclusively uses diamonds that are of exceptional quality, focusing on those that are graded IF or internally flawless to ensure there are no visible inclusions, even under 10x magnification. This level of clarity ensures that each gemstone reflects light beautifully, contributing to the watch’s overall brilliance and allure.

In terms of color, Rolex selects diamonds that fall within the 4 highest grades. Diamonds used in Rolex watches are typically rated D (colorless), E, F and G (nearly colorless), according to the Gemological Institute of America’s color scale. This narrow selection criteria ensures that the diamonds exhibit a stunning, bright white appearance, enhancing the luxury and aesthetic appeal of the timepiece.

Image

One might wonder why Rolex doesn't exclusively use the absolutely colorless diamonds, specifically those graded D. The reason lies in the fact that to the untrained eye, diamonds graded D, E, and F appear virtually identical, with differences only discernible by professional gemologists upon close inspection. Moreover, diamonds inherently reflect surrounding colors, so a G-grade diamond set in a yellow gold Rolex watch won't perceptibly alter the diamond's color to the observer. It's reasonable to speculate, however, that for their white gold and platinum timepieces, Rolex likely opts for D-grade diamonds to maximize the brilliance and ice-like clarity, ensuring these watches display the utmost in sparkle and elegance.

Over the years, the Daytona has undergone numerous enhancements and refinements, culminating in the latest iteration that shaves approximately 0.5mm off its case thickness. This subtle yet significant adjustment further enhances the watch's wearability, cementing its status as one of the most comfortable mass-market mechanical chronographs available. The achievement of making its already robust automatic chronograph movement thinner underscores the Daytona's position at the pinnacle of wearable luxury chronographs.

Image

The most impactful enhancement Rolex could introduce to this model, especially with its full bracelet, is the integration of their Glidelock extension system within the clasp. While the existing Easylink feature is adequate, offering a 5 mm extension, it sometimes proves too extensive. The Glidelock system, with its 2 mm incremental adjustments, offers a more precise and comfortable fit, addressing situations where a more nuanced adjustment is preferred. This improvement would significantly enhance the watch's wearability, making it an even more adaptable and user-friendly timepiece.

To summarize, my journey through the dazzling world of Rolex, from its captivating Everose gold to the intricate selection of diamonds, has deepened my appreciation for the meticulous craftsmanship and innovation that define the brand. The exploration into the realms of natural and lab-grown diamonds not only expanded my understanding but also highlighted the nuanced choices behind each Rolex timepiece. With each refinement, like the slimming of the Daytona's case or the potential for a more adaptable Glidelock system, Rolex continues to set the standard for luxury watches. These enhancements not only contribute to the watch's elegance and functionality but also affirm Rolex's commitment to excellence. As I ponder the value of upgrading to higher-grade diamonds, the experiences shared here reflect a broader appreciation for the art of watchmaking—a testament to Rolex's enduring legacy and its unparalleled ability to blend beauty, precision, and sophistication in every timepiece.

That’s all for today fellow Crunchers! I hope you enjoy! Please feel free to comment any thoughts you may have below. Cheers WC Fam!

A holy grailpiece, truly beautiful my friend.

Thanks a lot, Scott. I share your sentiment—this Daytona is indeed a grail-level Rolex. The delivery was the high point of my 2023, and perhaps the best day I’ve had in recent memory. It was made all the more special because it came as a complete surprise.

Until they led me into the private Rolex delivery room, I was oblivious to the surprise that awaited me—a brand new Daytona, elegantly presented in its box on the table. That moment was truly unforgettable.

That is a moment that will no doubt stick with you. There is always one piece that means the world to you and I am sure it will be the Daytona. My special piece and first luxury watch was an Omega Speedmaster from my wife as a birthday surprise. Like you, I was taken aback and ever since that watch is just special. Wear that beautiful piece in good health my friend and fellow watch addict!

The only thing that could've topped the day I received my Daytona would have been if it had been a gift—instead of me shelling out an unexpected $50k. As much as I jest about the shock to my wallet, I'm genuinely thankful for being in a financial position to make such a spur-of-the-moment purchase. It's a bit amusing when you think about it—feeling excited and grateful for the opportunity to spend such a hefty sum. Who knew spending $50,000 could make someone so happy? 😂 Daytona Delivery Day

Excellent write up Paul! I enjoyed learning about the grades of diamonds that Rolex uses for their different colors of metals. I am finishing up my diamond days today. I know that the quality of my diamonds could be leftovers swept up off of the Rolex factory floor. It doesn't matter to me. I like a nice diamond watch when it's done tastefully. Your Daytona, pure taste my friend. I don't see a need to upgrade the diamonds. Rolex has already chosen the perfect ones for it.
