One for the Golfist Crunchers

I am doing some golf driving on the weekend. I don’t golf but I got to thinking about the sport and watches. Lots of golf sponsorship by the big brands but you don’t see pros wearing watches in play. I have read that the forces generated can damage the mechanisms inside mechanical watches, I have also read that the risk of this in modern watches is negligible, that it is more of a comfort issue, or fear of scratching the case when getting clubs in and out of the bag.

So, any golf types, do you wear a watch on the course or at the range? Have you ever mangled your mechanisms whilst swinging?

Incidentally, I’m not worried about my own watches this weekend, insofar as I don’t think I could generate any force which would trouble my watches, although I may do a comical 720 degree spin and end up in a heap on the floor, so may put the G-Shock on for that!

I’ve worn an Apple Watch before and shot my best with an Orient Mako diver. Being the superstitious type, I’ve continued wearing for a few rounds now, with mixed results. I’m not worried about either watch but YMMV, depending on your risk aversion.

·

Ahh golfing, I used to play but it affected my mental health as after a few holes I would be flinging clubs and swearing like a docker. It's true you don't see many of the Pros wearing watches, I can't see why not but perhaps there is a reason why, and someone can enlighten us.

·

My watchmaker has apparently had to rebuild the shock protection on several Rolexes after they were worn when playing golf. I think it's probably best not to wear a Mechanical watch when playing

·

As a non-golfist it surprises me no one has thought to take the clubs out of the bag with the non watch bearing arm?

I have played hundreds of rounds and hit tens of thousands of balls and not once have I taken a watch off. Rolex, Seiko, Citizen, Luminox, MoonSwatch. They’ve all survived just fine.

As far as pros go: it’s just personal preference and what’s comfortable. Even if it did damage the movement, I think Tiger and Rory can afford the repair bill.

·

I would wear a watch whilst golfing, just not a watch of any value especially if the watch has a bracelet.

I know that carrying your own bag round 18 holes isn’t common for many but in Scotland many of us do exactly that. It’s virtually impossible not to scratch or ding your watch/bracelet if you’re doing this.

I use my garmin golf watch when playing - it keeps track of my swings, distances, and it maps out the course. Not sure why anyone would use a mechanical watch when you can use a garmin.

Wait a minute, did I just say a digital watch is better than a mechanical watch 🫣

I wear a Garmin, golf specific watch, when I play. Helps we keep an “accurate” score and love the data with Garmin Connect. No issue with comfort. I find wearing a watch actually helps me keep the club face closed at impact!!!

I’ve worn other watches when playing too. I guess it’s all personal preference. I wouldn’t wear one I was worried about getting unnecessary damage though.

Hit em straight! 🍻

well of course they can - they dont pay for the watches they are seen wearing.

Anyhoo, no sponsor would admit to one failing on the job now would they!?

I play many sports and golf is definitely one of them. I will not play with any type of jewelry or any gadgets like earbuds listening to music. This is all about FOCUS and kill'n my competition LOL! Therefore, no watches when playing golf period! Stay Thirsty My Man 👊🏽🍻

·

Yes I wear a watch, but now it’s a Garmin as it measures to the yard 🎯(doesn’t help my game much)

I used wear my IWC GST 3727 titanium all the time and the Chono-hand fell off due repetition and impact… mostly impact!

Enjoy golfing it’s a lovely sport.

I play golf regularly but never wear a watch for two main reasons:

  1. Comfort - it doesn’t feel comfortable particularly on a hot day.

  2. Swing balance - probably nothing but the very few times that I have swung with a 120g plus watch on it feels unbalanced relative to my normal swing. Now with practice I am sure I could get used to it but there’s no need.

I do have a Garmin golf watch that uses satellite triangulation to give me decent distances on the golf course but I don’t wear it on my wrist I strap it to my golf bag, but the time is there if I need it.

Most of my golf buddies just wear a golf watch like a Garmin or a smart watch with a golf app - I’m probably the odd one out strapping it to my bag.

I've got it drilled into my head from safety drills to ditch all jewelry, even my wedding ring and watch, before hitting the gym or playing sports. No jewelry, no worries like "WHAT'S THAT? DOWN TO THE FLOOR! 10,000 PUSH UPS, NOW 📢!"

·

I wear all my watches golfing. 🍻

When I played golf I typically removed my watch, more as a matter of comfort than anything else. My $0.02

·

Sometimes I'd wear a watch, sometimes not depending on the round. Over the past few years my G-Shock GAB2100 has been my go-to.

·

I am terrible at golf & wore my G-Shock last time I played this summer. Don't feel comfortable risking my automatics/mechanicals.

·

I wouldn't wear a mechanical watch playing golf as I'd be scared of damaging the movement. I usually wear a G-Shock or Casio calculator watch because it's so thin and unobtrusive.

·

I only use an Apple Watch (and before, a Garmin) while golfing. I'm sure many people will say they use it and "it's fine", but especially on iron/wedge shot the impact of the club face into the ground is quite strong and cause lots of vibrations.

·

Wear ShotScope whilst golfing (that’s the tool for this particular job) but I’m sure its possible wear a mechanical/quartz watch too.

Can’t think of many pro golfers that wear watches when they play apart from the obvious ones - Bubba Watson and is Richard Mille / Phil Mickelson and his Rolex Cellini

·

Coming from a family of golfists, a strong memory of mine from a very young age is my Dad taking off his watch before a round and putting it in his bag. It almost seemed like ritual, so I naturally adopted it too. Didn't realise at the time it might have been something to do with not damaging the watch. Needless to say it didn't benefit my golf game at all! He is still bloody good at it whilst I am average at best! But I couldn't play with a watch on now, it would feel so strange.

Also in the Shotscope camp, until they released their fob variant, even wore the watch type.

Now I'm back to whatever the watch of the day is. Usually on a strap due to weather. Don't like steel in cold, or hot.

Golf is so much of a feel and swing mechanics type of sport, it's no surprise the pros don't. Especially if they didn't start playing with one as a child.

With modern autos, less concerned about shock damage. Especially with a properly fitted clubs/shaft combo.

·

I wear my Casio on the golf course. That way I don’t have to worry about ruining my mechanical watches if I chunk it or hit a goose or something.

does nothing for my game though
