Am I in the Minority??

Now I know the speedy is an iconic watch. I get that, it’s brilliantly made, fantastic movement and beautifully finished, and if you pay a premium you can have snoopy with a rocket up his ass sending him to the moon, but is it all just a bit, well, Meh!

I gotta be honest it doesn’t really do anything for me! I almost find it’s perfection a bit of a turn off, it makes it a bit sterile and lacking in character. If I had speedy money I wouldn’t buy a speedy.

However turn the clock back around 20years and you do find speedys with character. Take the second watch photographed. This is known as the broad arrow due the hands. This is an absolute stunner in my eyes with that silver bezel. Throw a leather strap on it and you’ve got a really beauty there, yes you don’t have the new movement, but visually it’s a far betting looking watch and price wise you got money left over to buy a second hand black bay or go for something British and get something from Fears!

But what are your thoughts? Over hyped watch or should be given it’s respect?? Or perhaps both!

I fully agree. I would buy the second watch for sure... The first one does not speak to me... However I do respect the Speedy a lot, but would not buy the current version...

·

To me it's just OK, nothing special even the snoopy with a rocket up it's clacker. Like the Tudor BB for me. Does nothing.

·

I'm boring and like the sterile, utilitarian design combined with solid quality and robustness. That said, I wouldn't buy one, I don't think. I just don't think I can spend that much on a watch with pushers I could damage. If I was absurdly rich, I'd enjoy having one.

·

It's the ultimate wristwatch imho, purely because of it's history and achievements. Nowt comes close.

I agree the broad arrow looks nicer, but as a tool the slender hands are far more practical.

I'm sure I'll end up with one one day, but I'm not in a hurry!

·

There are just too many for me to make a decision on what to buy. I think the "moon" thing is also a little milked out. Just a bit.

Love the "Classic" Speedmaster, and also think that the "Broad Arrow" version is a STUNNER!!

Pagani Design need to do an "Homage" of this one for us "poor" folk! ... hear that Pagani? 👍

EDIT!

looks like they do ... kinda! 😮 LOL!!

I assumed this was an American boomer thing, like Corvettes or Harley-Davidson, with a smattering of history nerds. But there are people outside the demographic that claim to like, love, the thing. I thoroughly don't understand it. The bizarre cult status is rivaled only by the Reverso and Santos.

·

I absolutely fee the same way. Although I’m a huge space enthusiast and I love the whole story of the moon watch I would never buy, simply because I think it looks utterly boring…this and the increasing price.

·

I would buy the current white dial one that was newly released... but I really REALLY need to save money now 😅

·

Broad Arrow Speedies are my favourite speedies!

That also being said, the 3861 is an absolutely phenomenal watch. Pick one up lightly used on the secondary market and spend two weeks wearing it. You’ll likely change your mind. I think with all watches, you cannot really comment unless you have had some long term experience.

Speedmaster’s for some reason made absolutely no sense at all to me until I bought my first a few years ago now; and since then I’ve been through a few to end up with the three I have left left.

Grab the broad arrow and see where it takes you. If it doesn’t work out you won’t lose money selling it on as long as you buy at the right price.

Just be sure there is no patina/ any sign of rust on the applied logo, some of the not as well cared for broad arrows have signs of water ingress, often seen as almost rust in that area.

Your right the old ones do have a look about them that doesn't exist in the newer ones.

·

I own the hesalite model. It’s great looking imo and wears well. I bought it lightly preowned and the cost savings made it a compelling deal. The moon stuff is overhyped by the brand and YTs. Teddy has to sell him some Omegas. Then again, I haven’t met a single person who said I bought the watch because it went to the moon.

·

I have the broad arrow, it's my forever speedy

It’s suppose to be boring and sterile. It’s not a trendy watch. It’s supposed to look good in its basic form on a person going to the moon in the 60s and 70s and a person going to mars 20 years from now. It’s supposed to (and is) an all time classic design

I'd agree with you here. Much like how "boring" the Sub is, or Tudors, Sieko divers, etc.

Simple, legible watches, that were used for very specific purposes before dive computers, flight programmers/computers, and flight path modeling.

Whether someone likes the design, wants to wear an iconic piece of nostalgia, doesn't really matter.

I know of an EOD TL, who wears the Hesalite variant, on a ridiculously long NASA spec Velcro strap. He does this to better be able to wear on the outside of the bomb suit (provided the situation is safe enough to handle introduction of a watch movement to the chosen environment).

Why? For no other reason than he likes to help track soak times and positive actions manually down range, without having to walk back up range for a time hack each time, etc.

Could he use a digital variant, or his P2? Yes. But Rule No. 1* ALWAYS applies 😂.

And if you can follow Rule No. 1 AND have functionality/practicality, why not?

*Always Look Cool 😎

Yeah owned a fois for bored with it

I absolutely love Speedys, but I know how you feel because I feel that way about Rolex Submariners.

·

I am generally in agreement with you here. To me the Speedmaster feels and looks like a toy. I much rather prefer the heft of my Carrera. I love the feel of the column wheel more than that of the pushers on the Speedmaster and the brilliance of the polished steel hands and indices makes me feel comfortable wearing it in any event from sporting to business to black tie. I don't get that from the Speedmaster.

I was in the “don’t get it camp” but I now own three, and maybe a fourth (the all white dial that was released this year)

The speedy is a classic and iconic watch for sure, and many on WC. I am sure many a proud owner but they do nothing for me and never have really. Not knocking the watch, we are all different and like different stuff. Every time I see a speedy post on WC I skip TBH, including the swatch variants.

It is so nice that we all have opinions...LOL Enjoy the hobby

There's the Speedy Pro, which seems to be the one you're talking about, and then a metric boat load of non-Pro (Speedy Amateur? 😅) which cover all kinds of bases in terms of colour, finishes, styles, sizes etc. But the Pro is what it is and will likely never undergo any drastic styling changes, so if it's not your bag it probably never will be 🙂

That’s what it’s all about right lol. Opinions, loves and hates! You shouldnt knock a person for their choice but that shouldn’t stop you saying if you don’t like what they’ve chosen!

Yeah like I said, it’s a design that doesn’t really do it for me but that’s what this watch collecting lark is all about. If we all liked the same thing it would be f**king boring haha.

I had a Speedy but, it didn’t move me. I hardly wore it and eventually sold it to someone who’d appreciate it more.
