Sold luxury watches in my early 20s (including AP) and developed an interest in horology and mechanical watches. Over 20 years later, I have started to move up market from budget mechanicals.
A cheap Timex I'm sure. My first mechanical watch was a Maurice LaCroix Pontos Day/date. I still own it over 20 years later.
Q: Do you have a watch with a particularly interesting story behind it?
When I worked in St. Thomas in my early 20s selling luxury watches, I was fortunate enough to be able to get an employee discount. Unfortunately, I had very little money back then, but I wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to buy my first luxury (to me) mechanical watch. I eventually settled on a silver dial Maurice LaCroix Pontos Day/date. It cost me about a week's salary at the time ($425). I thought that was insanely expensive back then. It was selling luxury watches that first got me in to them. Whenever I put on that watch, I think about being able to try on APs whenever I wanted but I also think about being young again and living in the Caribbean, which was a dream come true for me back then. I still haven't been back to the Virgin Islands since I moved away over 20 years ago.
Q: What is one piece of advice you have for someone just getting into watches?
Take your time and try on before you buy.
Q: What is your grail watch and why?
Not entirely sure, but it would likely be a luxury hand wound thin dress watch with an exhibition case back and amazing finishing.
