SNK observation

(Picture for attention)

The Seiko SNK is a gateway legend in the watch community, I believe we can all recognize this. It's not perfect, with the non-hacking, non-handwinding 7S26 movement, easily scratched hardlex crystal, and for some, pretty diminutive dimension. People also seem to complain about the stock strap. Yes, it's not smooth seatbelt NATO comfortable, but I have a different take.

The stock strap on the SNK field watch line is a rugged strap, perfect for the intended use of this little piece. And with some regular wear, I think it softens up pretty nicely.

Now here, in my opinion, is where it shines. Recalling the somewhat compact dimension of the SNK, the strap is actually nice and long enough for guys with bigger wrists to have a comfortable fit. Most watch straps that are under 20 mm are embarrassingly short for anyone over a 7.25" wrist size.

So what I'm saying (partially in jest) is if anyone has a stock SNK 803 or 807 strap, and want to get rid of it, send it my way. I'll be happy to pay postage 😂😂😂😂

Also, for my fellow SNK owners, mine hacks and handwinds...😛

I love my SNK803 ... which rocks the black SNK809 strap! Great combination IMHO 👍

On the 803, honestly, if I could get a long enough brown leather, that would be my cuppa.

I had an 803, but the white dial, to me, with Caucasian skin, seems to look much smaller than my 807

I'm a white dude too (you blame my English/Norman French ancestors! LOL!!), but I have small wrists, so the beige dial of the 803 doesn't likely have the same effect 😉

My wrists are pretty large. That's probably a combination of heredity and working in factories, warehouses, and now for the last coming up on 16 years as a massage therapist.

yeah, that'd contribute to having larger wrists alright! 😎

The WC Community helped me rediscovered my love the for SNK. It was wallowing in the overflow junk drawer until folks here were so passionate about their love the it. I have the 805 (green) variant so I can't help you, just that I too, swapped out the stock strap as it was literally rubbing me the wrong way.

Hey, I'd take the green one too, for other watches!

·

If only they did a no date version. 😞

SNK: pretty much the only field or pilot watch I like, which is why I have a cream and black one from back when they were $50.

·

I paid $60.00 for mine.

I'd send you my old beat up strap if I still had it.

Wearing today. It was my first mechanical, and I loved the look of the canvas strap, but it is not the most comfortable. A great piece for learning things I do and do not like in a watch as a new collector.

That would go against the Seiko 5 list of attributes (not that they haven't done it before), but you could always swap the dial for a Flieger B no date.

·

Am looking forward to getting mine 😍 bought it but it has to be shipped across the ponds ... Still waiting on it 😊 very exited though

just put it on leather and be done with it!

Just when I think I want to get rid of my SNK I put it on and voila! Magic. This is my favorite pic:

The stock strap I actually plan to use on another watch. I agree it's not actually bad.

They're never long enough

I wore the cream dial SNK for about 4-5 years back when I was a one-watch-person and didn’t have this watch collecting disease so badly! Like you, I wore and loved the stock strap, but it eventually wore out - bought a couple leather straps and it really dresses up! Looks great on this olive green leather strap IMO!

I didn't mind the stock black nylon strap on my 809 but it was too much black for my liking and I planned on a leather strap for some retro-ish amusement.

I have a bunch of different straps for it now but it tends to spend most of its time on a dark brown croc.

Just a few examples:

You would need some quite grippy fingernails to handwind one of these, or maybe a special tool.

I just run my finger along the ridges of the crown. Probably not the best for the stem, but it works. I don't do it that often.

My SNK809 sits on a comfy $0.59 rubber deployant strap, perfect for the gym

Still rock mine, as notoriously "easy" the hardlex is to scratch haven't done it yet, knock on 🪵!

Here is another SNK, if you want one with a MACV-SOG vibes.

That's not one of the SNK 800 series. What's MACV-SOG?

·

Yes it's snk381 not the 800 series. MACV-SOC - Military Assistance Command, Vietnam – Studies and Observations Group. The soldiers used several series of seiko 5s when deployed in Vietnam. This snk381 looks the most similar to those used in Vietnam. https://www.watchesofespionage.com/blogs/woe-dispatch/vietnam-macv-sog-seikos-setting-the-record-straight

SNK 80x line is great. I have the sand, blue, and black iterations from when you could pay sixty or so for them on Amazon. Strap monsters! Highly recommend. The red dialed Amazon exclusive one is hard to come by. Straps do break in after time. The 809 with the 805 green strap looks great, classic field watch look.
