Patek Philippe vs. Casio

At Watches & Wonders 2024, Patek Philippe released its new 5236P-010 In-Line Perpetual Calendar. The watch shows the day, date and month on one line, seen through a single dial aperture. It also shows the time and moon phase. It’s waterproof to 30M. Its price is $141,405.

Alternatively, Casio sells the Tide Graph Moon Phase Men's Sports Watch w/Illuminator (Model WS-1300H-1AV Black) for $25.50. It also shows the day, date, month, time and moon phase. It’s waterproof to 100M. It’s also approximately 10x more accurate. Because it’s a quartz watch.

The two watches are functionally equivalent. The Casio is 3X more waterproof and 10X more accurate.

The Patek Philippe costs 5,545X more than the Casio.

Which one will you choose?

You’re comparing entirely different animals.

·

I would rather have an adults watch as compared to a kids watch so I chose A.

·

Nobody on the planet is cross shopping those models.

If you can afford the Patek, you have an assistant to keep you on time.

·

I mean…. I suppose when I get too drunk and drive my Ferrari off road I’d want the Casio when I stumble out of the drivers seat onto the dirt so that I wouldn’t scratch my Patek. So I choose the Casio for sure! Easy pick.

·

Really dislike both!

If push came to shove I'd go Casio in this instance (value aside) as it's the least repugnant.

Repugnant? Really?

Usually I agree with you. Well, that just goes to show! 😄

That seems to be the point.

The Casio is a utilitarian watch, not a kids watch.

·

Well I don’t have 141 thousand to spend on a watch, I guess that decides it for me 😂

That seems to be the point.

To what end? What point? Everyone knows that a cheap quartz watch is more accurate until it breaks, and is likely to be much more waterproof.

How can the comparison with a hand-made high horology masterpiece of mechanical mastery have any value? 😒

The Patek is a utilitarian watch controlled by Itty bitty gears, jewels and springs that were whittled by hand to the precision and almost as precise as a computer chip. To put these 2 watches in the same category and compare them is like comparing an adult watch to a toy watch in my opinion. Hence my comment.

Ask him.

Everything works untill it breaks. I would figure that the overly complex movement is more susceptible to damage than the quartz movement.

Both watches serve the same function with the same complications. You call it "hand-made high horology masterpiece", I call it overpriced jewlery.

The value? I can take value out of this comparison.

Arent you underselling the complexity of quartz a bit? Dont tell me that the PP isnt a toy, it is just for rich kids instead normal ones.

A quartz Patek compared to the quartz Casio is a fair analysis or a manual/automatic Patek compared to a manual/automatic Casio is a fair analysis. The 2 compared here are like comparing a baseball to a wiffleball. Better analogy for you? 😂

Not sure if its better, but it would be more fair.

When in doubt, get both

·

Neither sings to me. If fishing were my life that Casio would be a great tool.

·

The Casio doesn't get wrist time from me even if it's the only watch available after the apocalypse. It's got the styling of an 80s Panasonic ghetto blaster. 🤢

Really don't like the colour.

If it was black, blue or silver then that'd be my choice. 😉👍🏻

·

The Patek looks good, the Casio will get you anywhere

You’re comparing entirely different animals.

On the one hand, you’re completely correct. These watches shouldn’t be compared to one another.

On the other hand, feature by feature, these watches are functionally equivalent to each other. A moon phase complication is a moon phase complication.

The greater question here is what are the non-equivalent factors that cause one watch to be so much more expensive than the other.

I appreciate, respect, and own Swiss mechanical watches. I can justify to myself spending between $1,500 to $15,000 for an excellent watch from Omega, Tudor, or Rolex.

But $150,000 for a Swiss watch? There are other factors at play here beyond quality and precious metals.

Why is the brand of Patek Philippe worth 5,000X+ more than the Casio for a functionally equivalent watch?

It’s clearly worth more, but that much more?

Well, this changes the debate. The Patek is certainly worth a truckload of money. But how much of a truckload? They employ the most talented watchmakers and movement designers they can find. That costs. Hand finishing costs a lot. Fine materials such as gold, platinum etc., costs a lot.

But do they need to charge that much?

No, I don’t think so. But their market will bear it.

Still an issue for those of us who stargaze at such beauty!

Anyone else get some Tissot Heritage 1938 vibes from the Patek?? Definitely plenty different, but if I squint hard enough, I can just convince myself otherwise 😂
