How Is Timex Nowadays?

When talking about chronographs under $1,000 the three options I always see are the Seiko Prospex Speedtimer, the Bulova Lunar Pilot, and the Seagull.

I’m looking for some feedback and opinions on these two Timex pieces.

I root for them, an iconic brand with loads of heritage, but I get the impression they are still making watches for people who are not that interested in watches. There seems to be a ceiling on how good the quality is, and it's often style over substance. Could get better though, who knows. This is just the impression I get from what they put out.

I don’t think you can go wrong at that price point and the reverse panda looks good, just never gonna be a fan of a tilted day window. I don’t believe they are in the market to compete with watches around 500 or even 1000 $

I don't think they're bad at all and I'm a Timex fan, but check out the Glycine Quartz options as a comparison before you buy.

·

I got retail parts for a Seiko vk63 build for around 60 bucks. It's cheap and easy to build.

The only thing left to do is re-align the chrono hand back a second.

Timex, as of late, have been coming out with some great watches (and reissues).

I have two chronos from Timex. The Q chrono and the Timex x Pan Am chrono (which is the Waterbury model).

Both are very nice but I would give the nod to the Q. The action of the pushers is definitely more satisfying/responsive (for a quartz) on the Q as opposed to Pan Am and the overall finishing on the Q seems a bit better.

The Pan Am (Waterbury) is a flyback while the Q sweeps on the reset. The Panda version Q can be hard to read at times so the reverse panda may provide better legibility.

I don’t have the Marlin chrono but I do have a Marlin 40mm automatic and it gives a nice retro vibe.

I do like the look of the Marlin chrono (on a jubilee) over the Q.

The other watches you mentioned are all solid candidates too.

In the sub-$1000, the Lunar Pilot may be the best of the bunch with 43mm panda getting the nod.

And the Seiko Speedtimer gets high marks as well for its Seitona vibe and 39mm case (although the date window is useless).

Either of the two watches you’ve selected are smart-looking, reliable watches.

Enjoy and thanks for reminding that I don’t have a Seagull….. yet. 🤪

I have to admit to being a bit of a Timex fanboy, but the new Bulova 43mm LP has caught my interest at the moment

·

As a kid growing up in the 70s they were regarded as cheap and nasty watches. Everyone wanted Casio and Sekonda digital watches.

The latest releases look really good.

I've been a life-long Timex owner and currently own this of your two options:

The Q is a fantastic watch! Would love to eventually own the Marlin Chrono as well ... it's lovely!

Another excellent chronograph that you can purchase for cheaper than either of the two Timex models is the Pagani Design PD1701v3; available on Aliexpress for approx. $100 USD (or less). It's equipped with a Seiko VK63 meca-quartz movement, which is dead reliable and VERY accurate! 👍

I’d check out the Stratton Speciale as well. Vintage vibes and bad ass as well.
