Fashion Watches and Influencers!

So…..I’ve been watch collecting all my life.

But, ever since getting really into it over the past 4 years, I’ve noticed that there’s a part of me that has been thinking of liquidating my fashion watches and only buying “real brand” watches.

I never had that thought before, but the more I get into watches, the more I get influenced by all these reviews over a plethora of platforms.

So what do you all think?

Do you all look “down” on fashion watches?

The problem with liquidating "fashion" watches is that, unless you gift or donate them, there's not much of a market for them.

The Armani isn't a bad looking watch and the Movado, although a "fashiony" watch, has serious provenance and the Museum design is iconic. I'd hang onto those 2.

Gifting them to the next generation of watch collectors might be a good option here

Unfortunately I do. But might be related to owners thinking they have a great watch. ( maybe they do!)

Emporio Armani looks OK.

Well look, they're watches, made to a certain degree od quality to tell time. Yes, they will perform their task, but for me the main thing is personality, not just the looks ( yeah, I'm that type of guy 🤣). These watches feel alive to me, they don't have this charisma and charm. I also like me a good story and quirkyness plays a role too.

Since you already paid for those watches, hang on to them or give them as a gift to a non-watch person. You are not going to loose any more money if you have them, and you are not going to make any serious money if you sell them. They look fine and you'll wear them, maybe, once in a while. Just know, in the future, that fashion watches are not great and you need to do you research before acquiring a watch.

On the other hand, if you want to piss-off a watch geek, give it to him.

Yep! Most fashion watches are made by Fossil. They are ‘real watches’ in that they fulfil their function. However, they are not made by a watch company like say Seiko, Hamilton, Rolex and so on. Fashion watches appeal more to guys in their 20s in my opinion. As you get older you want better things from a watch!

I don't look down on them. I still own the ones that pushed me where I am today. I don't wear them and likely will give them away at some point. I'm in a position where I can afford and prefer better quality watches from respected brands that are horology focused.

My older daughter is a wonderful individual who famously could not qualify for a second interview as a barista at a Starbucks when she was still studying in university but she taught swim lessons, worked evenings as a lifeguard at a nearby community centre, always had her own stash of dollars for items which her mom and I refused to pay for including her weakness for blingy fashion watches when she was younger. Thinking back the watches were her independence notes to her watch enthusiast dad who lectured too much about everything. I have nothing against fashion watches.

·

I personally don’t like fashion watches, but if you do that’s all that matters - plenty of non-watch nerds gladly wear them! Resale can be a bit of an issue, so it’s probably just worth keeping them

This perry ellis is a diver 200 meters by directional bezel and a date window. I like it very much.

I have a few "fashion brands" I mainly bought them because I liked the look, a certain color, a design. While I still wear them, if they break I'm not gonna bother getting them fixed.

I had an MVMT from my early twenties like someone mentioned above, and hadn’t worn it for years and didn’t want to replace the battery.

Listed and sold for $20 on Facebook marketplace in a couple days. Put it on my porch in the morning, get the $20 from under the mat in the afternoon.

Not that $20 is going to get me to retire early, but now someone else enjoying it and I’m not feeling guilty looking at it in my watch case anymore

A watch is only bad value in context of the price, once you've paid for it that becomes irrelevant, its yours. If you like em keep em, if not dont. Cartier is a jeweler but everyone loves their watches. Do

They've been making watches for a long time now and tbh, the value isn't much worse than what seiko offers nowadays. There's no such thing as a 'real brand' don't let others dictate your opinions
