Soliciting Negative Opinions on Longines

Sometimes I feel WC can be an echo chamber, reinforcing one’s positive opinion on specific watches and brands. Well, I am fan of Longines and would love to hear from Crunchers with a different viewpoint. Below is a picture of a Longines chronograph I tried on today. Feel free to comment on the brand and / or this model. Thanks.

Longines was a brand I didn’t really care much for until this year. They’ve put out some fantastic pieces over the past few months; causing me to really take notice.

I would like to see them do something with the crystal. Not sure if it’s a lack of AR coating, but the models Ive seen, can be difficult on the eyes due to some glaring. I talked in depth with the SA and she mentioned a few owners brought that to her attention.

·

The Spirit Zulu Time definitely has my attention. I also saw one the other day it has a inner rotating bezel, can’t remember the name

·

Their lug to lug distance is too long. Same thing I feel about Hamilton and Nomos.

·

I’ve always liked and respected Longines for their history and their place in the market. They always seemed like a solid bet for someone looking to step into what some people refer to as “entry level luxury.” Like @DH_NYC, they weren’t really on my radar until a few years ago, though. Now I’m paying attention. They’ve had a whole slew of fantastic releases lately. One after another. I think it’s time for me to go get one. 😆

·

I had heard of Longines but until the past couple of months I never paid attention to any their watches. I stumbled across the Longines Spirit and I started looking into them as a brand. I was surprised they were not nearly as expensive as I expected. I found a local jewelry store that is a Longines dealer so sometime next year I am going to check them out in person. They are still expensive to me but as I research them more I think I would like to own 1 or 2.

Magstime I think that watch looks great.

That is one beautiful dial!

·

I dock them points for chasing trends - maybe including imitating others - and beating me down with their storied legacy. I think there’s a shortage of freshness in the catalog - with a few exceptions. And what is with the color palette lately?? 🤮 The one you’ve pictured looks fine. Their blue Big Eye chronograph is super nice.

·

I Will buy their zulu gmt 39 green bezel or hydrconquest gmt. Not interested in other model

·

Same as others have said above-newer to me, and now they’re putting out some smaller case and lug2lug dimensions that are much more reasonable. I really like the new GMT and the Legend Diver with the internal bezel. Smaller chronos are nice, too. Definitely on my potentials list.

I’m not a fan of the dial on the chronograph above, though.

No hate, just have a hard time pronouncing the brand 🤣

Long jeans?

·

They are very good watches, but don’t buy new. They lose a lot of value

·

Long jeans?

Lawn gene?

·

Isn't it pronounced Long-gyn-es? 🤔😆

I think that Heritage Classic looks great.

·

They make great watches and ones I really enjoy. When I have expressed how much I like their watches I only receive push back from

People who haven’t experienced thier pieces in the last few years. I’ve said this in the past “ Longines is pricing themselves like the old

omega to box toe to toe with Tudor and Omega is pricing themselves closer to Rolex to claw at the crown”.

I don´t think I can say something negative about Longines as a whole. Some of their watches I like, some I don´t. I was considering the Spirit, but it was a little bit too much on the dressy side for its toolish origins.

Sorry dude re-read my comment and realized I sounded like a dick, deleted it before I was able to see yours. Happy Sunday 🥸

No worries, happy Sunday! 🥳

I was an AD for the brand for many years until I left the industry in 2009.

We couldn’t give away their watches. The only time one sold was when an Asian businessman needed to pick up a gift leaving SeaTac airport. We sold maybe five a year.

At that time people would rather spend similar money on our entry level Omegas. Raymond Weil got more love than Longines. Even the local Longines rep didn’t wear the brand when he came into the store. 😆

The pieces available today aren’t really any different than those around 15 years ago. Longines and the Swatch Group are just better at marketing the brand now.

Thanks, Craig. I appreciate you for sharing your experiences. Oddly enough, Raymond Weil and Baume seem to have been pushed aside in favor of Longines. Marketing, although dismissed, is key to introducing us consumers to great products. In my opinion, late 70s’ Longines was dung and it took decades to recover. Glad the brand has been course corrected.

This is lovely. Is it 40 or 42mm?

Hi Tom, it’s 40mm.

·

Hi Tom, it’s 40mm.

I like it more now!

·

I love Longines, and would argue they have recently stepped up with new enthusiasm too. 👍

Legend Diver; just released in 39mm as well.

Yes Legend diver is the name, thank you.

·

I think they have had a similar brand resurrection similar to Tudor, They are still underrated by most of the buying public which along with the brand positioning is keeping prices lower. With the quilitay and the massive back history of designs they can use as a base if allowed they are only going to gain in popularity, would like them to push the ceiling again and complete fairly with Omega on some lines.

·

They do have some great watches. I particularly like the legend diver with its retro vibes. The big eye is another favorite.

However, as much as I wanted to like their pilot range like the spirit, there is just something really bland about the styling. Something between the font and the tacky 5 stars above the word chronograph and their logo that reminds me of the Chrysler car logo doesn't feel interesting. Would much rather go IWC or Sinn for those types of watches (albeit at slightly different price points)

Same goes with the hydroconquest line. Something about the proportions, font choices, and use of space just feels a bit generic, as if they were doing their best to imitate more classic divers without outright copying them. Again, I'd go Omega, Rolex, or oris instead of that range.

Don't let all that sway you from buying a Longines though! My gripes are mostly to do with style. As I said at the top, I think they have some excellent models and even if I don't agree with the styling choices, their finish quality is great and I can't argue with the value for money in any of their range.

Thanks for the great write up. I tend to agree on the spirit and hydroconquest. Those have never piqued my interest. I am a fan of the master and heritage models for the most part. One of the brand’s more interesting releases was the UltraChron, which doesn’t get enough airtime imo.
