Your thoughts on domed crystals?

Putting the kid to bed I was admiring how light distorts over the domed Cristal of my bgpd. People often lament lack of legibility with domed crystals, but from my own collection I find that it mostly helps with sideways legibility. The pics above showcase what I mean by that. But I only have sapphire crystals to look at so maybe that’s a bias to consider.

What are the thoughts of you crunchers on the topic? Pics from your own collection welcome!!

Agree with @FlatteryCamp here. Something cool about a dome, more so an acrylic one. Sure it might be harder to read at an extreme angle, but head on not as big a deal as well applied lume and distinct hand/indices.

·

Love a domed chrystal. The distorsion can awake the most boring dial.

·

Love 'em. Love the distortion!

Domed acrylic crystal, lovely

·

I love dome cristal too and if it is sapphire better

·

I admire domed Crystals. But good AR coating is a must for me in case of a domed Chrystal.

·

Does this count? Acrylic crystal on my Timex MK1 chronograph.

I like the look, but it is prone to scratches and bumps!

I’m going to get some Poly-watch before it gets too bad!

I believe that is called boxed crystal, and would be my preference: flat top, round edges. This full dome stuff where there is always a radius is not for me. It may be slightly better than the cheap drabness of flat crystals. Basically a flat crystal has exactly one position where it will offer glare. The domed crystal will always have glare.

Possibly the doming is less pronounced on watches that I consider to be too big. I wouldn't know.

I’m a big fan of boxed and domed crystals! One of my favorite features on a watch is how the crystal can distort if otherwise compliment the dial.

·

I love a domed crystal. Part of the reason that Oris is my grail watch. Here's my Dan Henry 1939

I’m not a big fan myself of domed crystals but when I tried that Oris that you are showing I was blown away. I guess it’s all about the execution. On that Oris? Amazing!

·

I really love how the domed crystal distorts the numbers when you look at the Oris BCPD at certain angles.😍

·

That Oris is very nice!

I don't mind a domed crystal.

·

Love my domed crystal on my Eddie Bauer, adds a bunch more personality! It also “flows” so well with the case

I always wondered what boxed meant, just too lazy to look it up. So does domed have to curve the entire way then technically? I know I should just Google it 😅

That's my understanding. I was hoping to Google up a better infographic, but I'm left with this from some sketch done by somebody for a Watchuseek threak.

Obviously the radius on the boxed is a bit stingy, but this finally makes sense of the term boxed to me, I think.

I think it’s beautiful and adds another layer of charm or appeal. I also love pointer dates.

Can't beat a diagram on a post it note. Glad I didn't Google it! Thanks 😁

For me, it all depends on if the dome adds to the overall look of the watch, for example if it’s on a vintage reissue, I don’t mind it
