Essential strap materials for every collection

What’s essential in every watch collection?

So far I have calf, cordovan, perlon.

What else really adds variety and style?

Ostrich? Butero? Lizard? Stingray? Sailcloth? Etc

Pics will be great!

Maybe a Milanese strap? Super comfy.

Crocodile is a classic and can really elevate a watch. Of course, choosing colors that compliment each other is essential as well. Who doesn't like green and gold?

It sure is! That gold case is no slouch either. In the right lighting conditions they really pop. It's easily the flashiest watch in my collection and I've got some other pretty colorful pieces.

Tropic Style Rubber

Uncle Seiko/Zuludiver/Barton/CNS etc

And anything single pass/NATO from Blu Shark, Haveston, Crown and Buckle, or CNS Straps in general.

Crown and Buckle in pic.

I don't see it as "essential straps." I am extremely picky about my straps, as picky as I am about my watches. I buy straps to go with a particular watch and most are not interchangeable. Since I like variety in my collection, the straps I select for one seldom are suitable for another. Of course, there are occasions where a basic strap might cross over, but these are rare. To be honest, I never thought of a "essential strap" until I read the title of this thread.

That’s an interesting take.

I kinda wanna just have an assortment at 18/19/20mm and I try hard to think what can be used across several watches. Just to increase the utility of the straps.

Stop screwing around and switch over to expansion bands.

I kid, but it's more about the right pairing. I never cared for lizard but it's the best choice for me with a vintage dress watch. And Twist-O-Flex fits the role for a lower end plain daily watch. The artist formerly known as @Omeganaut had a watch band made of chicken foot. I want kangaroo skin.

Had to google TOF. didn’t even know those things existed. Last used them when I was a kid. Kept pinching the skin.

Step outside your comfort zone.

A Forstner or Bonklip bracelet is also an option.

For me I have essentials based on location. It gets rather warm here in Texas so I need something I can sweat into without ruining (and then wash in the sink) So for me a necessity is some kind of cloth or nylon strap. I have to have a couple ready to swap for those especially hot days. My steel bracelets work just fine but having a little color is nice too.

I doubt "essential" is the right term but some mesh can give a watch a lift. This Seiko SNK809 is just a bit less utilitarian as a result:

Where is @SurferJohn when we need him?

If you want something truly unique, get chicken foot leather, from @Jericho. He also does all the other regular stuff too, ha!

A shark took mesh would look more toolish.....the Milanese more dressy.

I'll throw in a few here...

First, and one of my all-time favorites, Stingray...

Image

Then, a classy alternative to calf leather, Ostrich...

Image

As others have said, this one is a must have, Alligator...

And lastly, you can't live without a...Rubber...

Fantastic combination!

Thanks! It's easily the most flamboyant watch in my collection, but I love it.

I find it tricky to pick out straps for my watches when you're buying online. I have to try and imagine what it'll look like, or if the colour match is any good. I've just ordered a green canvas strap for my Zulu Time (to go alongside the bracelet and pig leather I already have for it) and i'm hoping the green is the "right" one!
