"...but I don't want to get it scratched!" (Advice needed)

So I just got this beautiful Nodus Sector Sport and I find myself feeling hesitant to wear it. This piece is my most expensive watch I own (to date). I've worn it just a handful of times and I've already gotten some hairline scratches on the case and bracelet. Nothing too Nodus-able(lol) but my OCD has me itching. I spend 70% of my time at work, and I have a job that lends many opportunities to accidentally bang up the case.

My questions for you Crunchers:

  1. Do you feel hesitant wearing an expensive watch at work?

  2. Does this phobic feeling subside over time?

  3. Do you just rock a beater to work?

Nice. 😏

I bought a Datejust 41 last month, it already have a few nano scratches on it. I can't tell from the picture but if that's not brushed then Cape Cod polishing wipes will take it right off. If it's brushed then you can get a wire wheel if you're careful, but I honestly wouldn't risk it.

Personally, I'd just live with the scratches. Watches are made to be worn, not sitting away collecting dust in a safe somewhere.

Amen, brother.

  1. No

  3. No

I wear whatever is on rotation that day. My beater is for DIY and gardening.

I’m very careful with my watches. I have some that I only wear if I know I’m in a relatively benign environment.

BUT… I have come to terms with dents, dings and scratchers. They add character and life to the watch, make it yours.

It's different for everyone, and even different for the same person depending on the watch being worn. The first scratch is almost always the hardest, but it's also a little liberating if you allow it to be. Personally, I say a scratched watch on the wrist is more enjoyable than a pristine watch in a box. If you're worried about wearing it for something dangerous to watches, a watch you can beat up or no watch at all makes a lot of sense. It's up to you.

Give this a go for a while to break yourself in….🤣

I think it's the ugly singular scratches that stand out and cause me to spend money overcoming these (big scratches on polished bracelets are the worst). However, once I get past the first scratch and into scratches, then I'm somewhat OK with it. I guess they call this patina???

great advice! I knew I could rely on this community. thanks.

I appreciate the perspective. I'm sure I'll feel ok with them sooner or later. I get used to them on my other watches. But you are right, the first one hurts the most.

Yes, yes and yes

I wouldn't wear white sneakers to go on a country walk though muddy fields.

It's fine to have different watches for different tasks.

Forget the "it's a tool bro" as most watches are not priced in line with the intended use these days.

If you don't want to bang up your best watch at work , get something more suited for your EDC 👍

That being said , even casual EDC will see the watch get scratched up over time.

My motto is I am a watch wearer, not collector. If I am hesitant to wear it, then I just won't buy it.

Wearer not a collector, words to live by!

My thoughts are:

Unless you've bought a very occasional dress watch, you're kidding yourself if you think you can live your life with a pristine watch - even sleeves, buttons and pockets will have their way with a perfectly polished surface over time.

IF you're job regularly involves scratchy manual labour - spannering, building, soldiering, etc, you're definitely going to mess up your watch quickly.

Image

If that's ok with you, more power to you - but if it was an expensive purchase for you, go buy yourself a second hand gshock for $50 and keep your nice watch for after hours leisure time.

Image

IF you're a soft handed desk-jockey like me, wear it all the time, accept it will pick up some nice patina and dings over the course of the next few decades. The first scratches are the worst, but over time, as the dings and swirls build up, it becomes your watch, your memories, your life laid engraved on the watch surface.

[This is my father's watch, handed down to me after 40 years of wearing it every day - To most it'll look like a f-ed up beater quart seiko, but every one of those scratches and dings was made by my dad, living his best life]

·

Ever since hitting my watch into an edge of a tile stack. I have learned to not move my left hand as much as possible. Haha!

Or just became aware of my surrondings and actions.

·

Depends on the work. I've got a beater for physical activities that could cause serious damage. Most of the time tho I wear my good pieces. I don't want damage but minor scratches help the watch become truly mine.

·

My advice is wear the watch and let it wear.

I mean.. wear it like you want. If it’s making a safe-queen out of it, so be it.. in the end it’s your money 🤷‍♂️

·

Lol. I go one step further and use my watches for work by letting other people wear them. Just did it with my Nodus Sector Sport.

Nice! I have the Two-Tone Sector Sport and I'm seriously thinking of buying the same watch in Ice Blue or the Yellow. Such a gorgeous piece.

I just bought an A. Lange & Sohne Saxonia Automatik about a month ago. I’ve worn it twice. Once to a wedding, once to the JLC Reverso exhibit.

Although I have an EXTREMELY unpopular opinion here (citing that if you can’t wear a watch everyday, then you shouldn’t own that watch), I believe that IT IS OK to own a vault queen, wear it on special occasions and put it away otherwise.

Otherwise I wear either the Omega Aqua Terra or the Seiko Laurel Alpinist Reimagined on a daily basis for work and weekends.

Noooo, relax, enjoy, let it be, scratches make the watch better
