From Alberta, Canada: I’ve always enjoyed watches: learning a lot about technical aspects along with artistic attraction & functionality. I don’t like the aesthetics of ‘dive’ nor ‘plain fashion’ watches. Many vintage (Automatic and Quartz) designs from the 1950s-1970s appeal to me. Recently, I’ve learned a lot about Swiss & Japanese Automatic Mechanicals + Canadian MicroBrands.
Hmm…I didn’t make a conscious choice to do so; it kind of occurred organically. In November 2022, I bought a re-imagined Timex Marlin (Green) but I sold a very old Tag-Huer. My everyday watch is a Casio
Q: What was the first watch you ever owned?
My first watch was a Timex Mickey Mouse watch with a red leather band. It was inexpensive. I was 8 years old and got it for my birthday. It lasted about a year.
Q: Do you have a watch with a particularly interesting story behind it?
I recently purchased a re-imagined Timex Marlin (Green). When I was a kid, my Dad wore a stylized Marlin (1960s). It reminds me of those days. My Dad is 82 now. I recently discovered a (much) closer-looking version of it on eBay and bought it. Just waiting for it to arrive.
Q: What is one piece of advice you have for someone just getting into watches?
Take your time. Do your research. Go for authenticity, not cost. No one cares if you’re wearing a Timex or a Rolex.
Q: What brands have been getting your attention lately?
Timex, Omega, Citizen and Seiko.
Q: What is your grail watch and why?
I have not decided yet; however, I keep looking at the many offerings by Grand Seiko.
