SOTC musings and help deciding which to let go of

Too many watches for me to wear on a regular basis- thinking about reducing down to at least below 7 or 8 and seeking some external validation (also some thoughts below on each watch if helpful for others looking at the same watch)

  • Definite keepers: Explorer I, GP Laureato, GO SeaQ - these are the ones I reach for every day, the ones that fit my wrist best (6ish inch wrist), the ones that go with my personal style (casual, with sometimes a fun suit jacket over a short sleeve button down for work) - Exp I was also a gift from my wife and is engraved so definitely a keeper. The GP is one of the most comfortable watches I've owned - plus great dial, nice movement, interesting case. GO- comfortable, feels very solid, love the numerals; the only two things I would change about it are the lack of taper on the otherwise excellent bracelet (though I'd prefer one without the polished center links) and the lack of open case back

  • Maybes/likely to stay: Santos medium, OP36 Green, GS mist flake GMT, IWC vintage dress watch - Santos is a watch I wear for dressier occasions, which now I have a true dress watch for, so not sure about its place in the lineup, but it is a watch that is very comfortable and fits my wrist well. OP is just a fun watch and I do love the color. GS GMT - I've owned probably 3 different GS GMTs from mechanical to quartz to SD and this is the one that's stayed in the collection the longest- it's super light and easy to wear

  • Likely to be sold: Oris Diver's 65 Chronos LE, Rolex Explorer II 16570, Monta noble turquoise (not pictured), GS SLGH009 (blue LE with new 9SA5 movement/orbit dial- to me looks more like wood grain) - most of these are relatively new acquisitions and while I like all of them, I don't end up reaching for them most of the time. I am kind of on the fence on selling all of them- but feel like I probably should since they're not getting really any wrist time

  • Others: moonswatch, gshock, green swatch (not pictured) - probably will end up keeping these as hiking watches, summer pool watches, etc

Thoughts? Would love to get out of my head on this and make some decisions so hoping the WC comm can help

I think you've pretty much nailed it, definitely GP and GO must stay. I wouldn't be too precious about the green OP but if you did get rid you'd need to replace it with something else with colour. So yes, I think you've called it👍

·

Agree, your reasoning sounds good and your planned disposals still leave you with a good range of watches for all occasions. Personally, I'd get rid of the Moonswatch and keep the G Shock as my all occasions beater since I question the solidity of the Moonswatch and the strap is way less practical.

·

Sounds like a good plan…if you have too. Looks like a great collection and watches fall in and out of favour so unless you hate them or need the cash or want to buy another watch then good to meet them all.

For me the low cost keepers don’t count. (Watch collection rule: no G-shocks ever count i the total and the moon swatch shouldn’t ever count in in collection sorry) as you have 2 GMTs one could go as both are fixed bezels. The OP and GS are also very similar in style but as you have the GO in blue that can take out the GS and the Oris but as the OP is your only green dial I would be inclined to keep unless you just don’t like it.

Good pt re moonswatch - thanks!

You have a some nice watches and some hard choices. You have an outstanding collection. I feel for you. If you want my opinion, I would to slim down the white dials. Best of luck!

Thanks! No real need to sell but seems like a waste for them all to sit- agree re not having two fixed bezel GMTs, and since I'd likely be down to 1 GS, seems like the exp II should be the one to go... but it is pretty comfy so I hesitate haha

·

The santos and OP should join the definite keepers. One is a timeless classic and the other is a future classic once it’s discontinued (which I think it will be by next year).

I don’t see Rolex experimenting with the colours so much and that celebration dial was like the conclusion. Just my opinion no facts or inside info to back it up.

·

Stunning collection btw. How long did it take you to put that together?

If no need to sell then I would say you have a fantastic collection to enjoy and although you might not wear some today remember you have the rest of your life enjoy the others 😉

·

Fantastic collection. The GO is my fave of the bunch.

Yeah I keep hearing the colorful OP discontinuation rumors which do make me hesitant to sell mine bc it is a lot of fun and it'd be a pain to try and buy again if it gets discontinued... to answer your other q, I've been "collecting" watches for probably 8 years or so, it's escalated over time; I've done a lot of buying and selling and I'm sure I'll do more - even though I normally sell at a loss at least I can wear them for some time and see how they settle in longer term

You’ve done very well! I bought my first watch in 2021 so I’m fairly new. I have that Santos and absolutely adore it. I bought my wife that green OP as well in 31mm so I have experience with these. Definitely don’t sell unless you need the money would be my say.

·

Sounds like you give it a lot of thought. So go for it! Great collection btw!

·

The explorer, the OP and the santos for me!

·

I'd give in, admit you have a problem and buy another box. I think you have a nice spread of styles.

·

Never liked the GP from pictures, but after trying it on.... it's on my list and it's staying there. It's definitely a keeper in my opinion.

Try not wearing each for as long as you can. If you don't miss it, it's time for that one to go. That's my approach lately. Surprisingly I managed to leave my omega 300 off the wrist for more than 6 months, so it's now up for sale.

·

Green OP is an iconic watch, I'd keep it. Other than that I'd agree with your overall assessment.

·

Beautiful, well balanced collection! I collect to build/add, so my opinion is useless here. Good luck! 😂🤙❤️

·

Ive just gone from 12 pieces down to 6 and feel much more comfortable with my collection now.

I did sell some of my nicer watches to fund a submariner hulk and a gmt master II (black/blue bezel), which if being honest with myself, was the main reason for the reduction. That and I wasnt wearing some of them very often.

I do regret letting some of them go (noteably my no time to die and seaweed green seamaster), so may end up purchasing one of them again in the future!

Good luck with your decision.

·

Look you don’t want to waste your precious time , just send them to me and I will mind them for you for a while :)

·

Santos , GO , GS , both , E1 & E2 just my picks to keep . A six watch collection, perfect 👍🏼

That Oris is stunning. Surprised that it's on the cutting block. Any insight as to why you're not fond of it?

Not that I don't like it but I think I usually end up wearing the GO if I want a blue dial or a dive watch

I just cleaned house as well! Went from about 18 to 10 I travel a lot for work when I leave the country I typically travel with one or two GMTs so 10 seemed like the right number for me. I feel like when I went down to fewer watches I appreciated my collection a little more. I still have a few lower budget watches in my 10 that I have growing options down the road. You have an outstanding collection thanks for the share! Also if you want to off the Oris Diver sixty-five is the next on my list lol.

I feel like enough people here have convinced me to try and give the oris another chance haha

I’m gonna be that guy with the random comment, sorry; where can I get a watch case like the one pictured?

Delugs! It's their 12 watch zip box

Thanks! And yes I would be lying if I said there weren't other watches I have my eye on but nothing that's been really calling me lately - the green sea master is also a fun watch!

You have quite a nice collection but I understand the desire to reduce the size because you don't wear certain ones enough. I've moved a couple of pieces out of my collection for the same reasons. I'm a professed appreciator of the Santos and think it is much more versatile than just serving as a dress watch. I think you'll find that it actually pairs well with even the most casual of outfits. You just have to stop worrying about the scratches.

As for the other watches in your "maybe" category, I personally don't gravitate to GS but the SLGH009 appeals more to my eyes than the Mist Flake GMT. As a fan of the GMT function, if you wanted to keep a GMT and if it were me I'd keep the Explorer II polar dial. But it's not me, it's you so I can't argue with the logic that you've laid out on what you'll likely sell.

·

Really tough decision but for me it would be the swatch.

But please keep the Oris. Because if you aren’t I want it (seriously dm me)

Appreciate the thoughts! Totally agree I'm way over subscribed on sports watches- trying to decide if that's just what it'll be for the time being bc that's what I end up wearing or if I'd like to branch out more into dressier options. I have previously had things like the Cartier santos dumont, a UG Polerouter, a 60s chrono that wore more like a dress watch (it was gold) - but those never got much wear, so I moved them all on, but kind of regret selling the Polerouter for sure - harder to find these days in good shape at a decent price

I absolutely love Polerouter, specially in rose gold.

It's just so good looking, sporty and elegant, amazing watch. Pretty reasonable regret, tbf)

I'm more into casual/dressy watches with a sport/tool undertones, like Datejust, Tank, Santos, Royal Oak - you got the gist) I guess my picks are reflecting that. Of course if you are more into tool/sports watches, then it's natural that your collection are more on that side. We don't need to buy watches to check the boxes)

yeah, Santos is super versatile. Tank is also going amazingly good with a casual attire, as long as you don't wear sweats, but Santos don't have such limitations. Amazing watch design by Cartier on those

I’d say you could sell the

- OP(too similar to EXP1 and you said you have another green swatch),

- Blue GS and Oris(since you have a blue dial GO)

- Exp2(since you have a white dial GS GMT and a white dial Santos)

- Either Moonswatch or Gshock(since both have a similar color tone)
