Suddenly Obsessed With Accuracy??

Out of nowhere I've been becoming neurotic over the accuracy of my watches, using atomic clocks and apps to time them to the nearest second. I consider myself a seasoned collector / WIS, so why now? ๐Ÿ’€

There's nothing wrong with appreciating accuracy! I'm slightly obsessed with it myself :)

Get a timegrapher, you don't need an expensive one to start.

I'm thinking about it.ย

I have a timegrapher, and enjoy getting my watches regulated as close to 0 spd as possible. Thereโ€™s a lot of satisfaction in seeing the seconds tick across in near perfect sync with the atomic clock even after a full day of wearing.ย

I feel like that's a can of worms for me, since I'd try to regulate everything I own.ย

There is more to it than just checking the timing... ย If you really want to know how well a watch is running, the timegrapher gives you more information. ย I have a basic one that I bought many years ago, and it has more than paid for itself.

ยท

I sometimes get this way when I wear one watch for an extended period of time. Perhaps, we're all trying to reconcile the sometimes extravagant costs of acquiring these things and their performance. We see other things in life where we pay more, we get something that does the job better. And we expect watches (mechanical) to be the same. ย

It's not an issue for me now, because I rotate through watches frequently.

ยท

You are going down the road to being a watch "techie" and no longer a WIS.

Mechanical watches are just that-mechanical, and will never achieve perfection.

But a watch that's off by +/- 20 seconds a day comes damn close to perfection when you do the math.

Relax, enjoy your mechanical marvels, and avoid timegraphers at all costs unless you want to turn your hobby into a science project.

ยท

Do not listen to the accuracy dealers and do not get a timegrapher. Realize that a mechanical watch that is accurate to +/- 20 seconds a day is ย nearly 99.9% accurate. Don't give into the OCD or your enjoyment of the hobby will take a turn for the worse and you'll never be happy with an "in-spec" movement. ย Don't turn into a "techie".

ยท

You might have some sort of OCD. Can be triggered by a lot of things in life, and is now manifesting itself in the way you relate to your watches. Something to consider.

I already have it unfortunately, so I'm trying everything I can to avoid it with this hobby. @foghorn makes a great point too, and I gotta think of it more 'romantically' rather than logically since that helps.ย

What, do you think this is new, 99% of us watch nerds are obsessed with accuracy of our watches ๐Ÿคฃ

Seriously though, some watches, vintage included, it's not so much about the accuracy but more about the history of the brand or that particular watch, aesthetics play a big part as well, enjoying wearing a watch for it's design elements is more important than accuracy.

Digital watches will almost always be more accurate, unless you spend big on a mechanical piece like a GS and others of that calibre, so this is why accuracy becomes only a side note to owning certain watches.

If you want accuracy at an affordable price buy a G-Shock with either Bluetooth connectivity or with atomic time keeping, problem solved.๐Ÿ˜‰ ย

If my watches arenโ€™t synchronized when I wear them, I end up knocking on my neighbors doors in my robe and slippers asking if the ice cream truck has been by yet.ย

ยท

Recently I've learned that mechanical watches are not about keeping accurate time; Casio F91W will do that much better for a % of the cost. They are about something else. Finding what the "else" is is what they are for. Just my two cents

Time.gov - best / worst watch enthusiast accoutremen?

ยท

I think thats normal. Should be normal. If i wanted jewelry, iโ€™d buy jewelry. If i want a watch, it better be accurate and to the specs. i aint spending thousands on a good for nothing flex machine/ego stroker

Let's be honest... accurate timekeeping is for quartz watches and smartphones. Accurate mechanical watch timekeeping is for watch addicts. Long ago manufacturers figured out how to keep accurate time within +/- 20 seconds a day. Watch manufacturers figured out how to make the watch case out pf precious metals, paint tiny intricate pictures on the dial & cases. Of course watches were a great way to tell time & even a necessity. Watch manufacturers started making very cool tools for specific jobs. Soon people could dive, fly, work around magnetic fields etc. with their timekeeping tools strapped to their wrist. Then it was all done cheaper for more people to become customers.... then that silly quartz thing happened in the 70's. SO... the mechanical watch industry doubled down on accuracy. Gauss AntiMagnetic properties morphed into META ratings. Pilot watches needed to evolve into TESTAF. Water Resistance is 100s and 1000s of meters now. Ceramic Bezels, ย Saphire Crystal.... I could go on.ย

Watch manufacturers make all this important so we keep buying their newly improved products. The watch industry killed it long ago. Now they overkill it AND we love it!!!!ย

Have >5 mechanical watches in your collection. Next day = next watch. In the evening any given watch is off by a few seconds max, that's within my personal acceptance range. The next time I wear the watch I have to set it anyways because it's been sitting in a drawer w/o power for a number of days.

I have way, way more than 5 watches. Maybe 2-3 do not meet above criteria. Usually I have forgotten that the next time I wear one of those less precise pieces.

This is my way of dealing with accuracy. I have too many watches to be bothered.

I think that would be a very healthy thing to do, OCD or not. Good luck! :)

I spent a hot minute caring about accuracy then I realised my $15 Casio FW91 was more accurate than certainly any commercially available mechanical watch ever made and instantly stopped caring.
