Starter collection: Thoughts?

Hi everyone,

im still a college student and haven’t had the budget to expand my collection into more storied brands with higher price tags. For now, I’m a Seiko-holic, and everything else you see here I’ve accrued in high school from relatives

Obviously there’s many more cool Seiko’s you can get. I am a fan of their titanium watches and the ones with the porcelain dials are cool unusual dress watches.  Oris may have something of interest for you, if you want all around daily wear watches.

Hello and welcome to the site from a fellow Seiko fan! I have a number of Seiko watches in my collection. Here are my favorites.

Lovely Seikos you have there! Killer Alpinist 💪🏻

·

I think that you don’t need to think that the price of the watch is how much you can enjoy it. Plenty one can find and thoroughly enjoy without it having to be luxury. Nice lineup you‘ve got.

·

I like that Batman bezel!

I have that same Fossil watch you have. It's not really my personal style, but it can be a good dress option. Actually recommended it to a friend to buy her fiance as a birthday gift for his first watch.

You can find decent prices on some nice Seiko models. I personally own a Turtle and I love it. I had a Samurai briefly and it was cool but I didn't connect with it like the turtle. The Alpinist is a banger. My only comment would be what are you using as a daily? None of those watches feels like a daily. Also. It never hurts to have a quartz watch for the days you are running late. Maybe look at getting a Casio Edifice as they have great specs. As someone else mentioned a Seiko titanium they have those with solar so you won't need to change the battery (capacitor) for a long time.

considered you re lucky guy. when im still in college i just have 1 swatch and 1 fossil watch, lol. but back in the day im not into watch

i wear both Seiko’s interchangeably day to day depending on outfit. (Don’t tell anyone but sometimes I switch them in the afternoon)

As the only skeleton I have, I find myself absolutely entranced by the simple motion of the balance wheel 🤷🏼‍♀️ Takes little to please me when it comes to moving mechanical components

I started collection young with gifts from my uncle...late seventies were the digital age and I had an assortment of casio, seiko digital watches....in college priorities were different and I literally forgot my collection...restarted again in my fifties...you have a very good collection...build it..

·

Looks like you’ve got a GREAT start! In college I just had a little seiko SNK field watch. You’ve got some great instincts apparently, so I’d be proud of that collection if I were you. Well done!

·

Great looking collection. Maybe add a Laco to it for a little German flair.

·

Great collection of watches.  Consider looking at Nomos, it is a good way to get some really impressive quality at the next price point.  Hamilton might be good for that too and / or Sinn.

·
  1. Stop collecting affordables now that you have so many and  start saving up for something in the luxury or entry-level luxury space.
    2. Think about getting a proper dress watch.
·

NICE starter collection.

You don't need to spend much money to get into watches.

Try to get into entry Swiss watches so that you can start to diversify the collection and at the same time understand the difference between Japanese and Swiss watches.

Good luck in your watch journey 👍

Is that a black Alpinist? I ❤️ the Alpinist and I have never seen one like that before!

·

Second hand is the way to go for keeping costs down.

I’d recommend a Hamilton field watch next.

·

You've got a great collection to start from - got some divers and a  chrono and an open skeleton automatic 👍  I love the diversity

Like a few others said above, you could add some everyday GADA watches like some Casio or G Shock (2100s). I would also recommend some dress watches from Seiko or Orient.

My own preference/rec is to check out the Seiko Presage line, esp the Cocktail series.  You get some beautiful and unique dials, with a good automatic movement, in a great price range (esp when on sale).

Can you give some info on the lovely chrono please?

Can you give some info on the lovely chrono please?

It is one of their Recraft line watches. It is a solar chronograph with a V175 mecha-quartz movement. The reference number is SSC513. I have it on a distressed strap from Strapsco.

I have gone back and forth on purchasing a Hamilton; they can be had second hand for around $400, something almost too good to pass up. The reason I hesitate is that I don't know that it would be filling a big enough "hole" in the collection, if you catch my meaning.

I lie awake at night thinking about The Presage GMT's with the porcelain dials.... encroaching on Grand Seiko expensive for a piece from its normal line :/
