What's Your Elevator Pitch?

Imagine this: You are in an elevator and a teenager with his/her iphone & apple watch enters the elevator. Your watch (real watch not the apple junk) catches light & they notice it and curiously ask you why do you still prefer wearing these analog 'old style' watches?

You have a chance to ignite that spark in this teenager's life for this beautiful world of watches - What would you say in that brief time that will not only make them understand your love for watches a little better BUT also makes them feel they want to learn more? What's your elevator pitch? (And no boring answers that say "Why should I say anything or convince anyone etc - Those may be legit answers but not in this situation because they are too boring- so go ahead - change this persons life for the better ))))))))

I'd say because this watch can go from this;

Thats awesome... great watch

·

great points especially the last one - it would be plain sad on the other hand if someone leaves apple watch for someone lol.. so definitely analog ones have an edge there

·

I'd tell them I grew up with them. Then I'd get off at the next floor whether it was my destination or not.

Thank you. I find it mesmerising just how different it looks every time you take a look at the dial.

·

I'd tell them that it's the perfect combination of art and engineering, and if they loved either, they'd do well to give one a try.

·

Contrary to popular (on this site) opinion, I don't have an inherent problem with smart watches. I personally just like to engage with the time without being harassed with steps, notifications, etc. I don't like having to charge my watch all the time. I think one functional g-shock is more than enough to tell the time and the fact that I own other watches is not a goal others should follow.

So I'd tell the kid thanks and move on with my day

·

Futureproof and I'm not reliant on the grid. Plus it looks better. Also, I'm not a standard issue basic bitch consumer. Reject modernity! I could probably go on about how it's too good for their kind, but I just don't care that much.

💯% with you on that

A watch is a part of your personality. It’s a conversation piece that to another person can be fascinating, bring back a memory or two and be a reminder for yourself of a time, person or place that may be long gone but is with you on your wrist and assisting you every day.

·

“Apple Watches are very functional in todays society but my young friend there is something magical about owning a mechanical watch that relies on you everyday to where you able to form an attachment to your time piece that can’t be fully appreciated until you own one.

By the way, are you on WatchCrunch?”

·

I would say, First, Don’t speak to strangers and mind your own business…

And I don’t speak with ignorant closed minded people imposing their views on others …

Not with strangers inside the elevator… there’s a proper time and space for everything …

First, let me say that I think the hatred over the Apple Watch and other smart watches feels so tired. Let people enjoy their gizmos, it hurts nobody and leaves more watches for the rest of us. That said, if a young man/woman asked me and I was trying to provoke thoughtful consideration/exploration into the hobby, I’d probably say something to the effect:

The least important thing your watch will ever tell is the time. What you choose to wear on your wrist can say many things - what type of person you may be, what you might care about, or even what you aspire to be. What do you think your watch is telling me about you?

They might brush it all off… I am sure many would… but I think having them shift their focus from the actual functions of a watch to the less tangible aspects is a good start. Just my 2 cents. 👍

·

Why Carbs instead of Fuel Injection, Side by Side instead of Over and Under or Loake instead of Nike.

I think it’s how you are made.

"Because mine is a high-end toy that I put it in a nice watchbox to admire. Yours can be found underneath my kids bed bin from Costco. You can also find Buzz Lightyear and Woody Allen in it :))."

Buzz Lightyear and Woody Allen are the same guy.

Hmmmm.. I would do my best! However sometimes it's hard to reach the youth. Especially in small spaces with so many illuminated buttons🙄

Image

Hysterically excellent! Yes, it is hard to reach young people these days. And check out that hat and outfit. Who knows what these crazy kids are wearing?

Ah, ok, so it's a lifespan thing in your eyes? Something has to be able to last a certain amount of time or it's junk from the outset? 🤔

We are strictly talking WATCHES - and the fact that so-called smart watches compete for the same "real estate" - i.e. wrists - and the fact that this conversation is about explaining to a teenager what is so romantic and classic about analog watches as opposed to wearing only mini phones on their wrists and believing its one and the same thing as 'wearing watches' - Everything else that people are trying to oppose, question, probe or prove is their own problem that my post had nothing to do with but i dont care much about that

·
ckim4watches

This pretty much says it all. Note these are units sold.

Image

Bud you are missing the entire point of the post - these numbers are the reason why this imaginary conversation between a person who loves analog/classic watch vs gizmos/tech wearing teen is taking place and about why some people still decide not to follow trends blindly but see the romanticsm of old world and its charm... these bars on that 1 dimension chart can all go off the graph and it would still make no difference to the love that people have becuase its not about units sold - so yeah this says lot of sales but other than that it says nothing

No it says the apple watch is deeply compelling to millions of people. Far more than mechanical watches. And you are missing the reason why.

blah blah blah

·

I both dislike teenagers and think collecting watches is stupid (as much as I enjoy it)- I would politely ask them if they are looking for a slap

My intention was purely to expand on the question and have a gentlemanly discussion to understand your perspective. It's fun, and challenges the interlect to take conversations on tangents sometimes, it helps us see things from different points of view and can grow our own understanding. It is this exploration of thoughts that you call "people are trying to oppose, question, probe or prove"... it is what many would call 'discussion'.

As you say, if you don't care much for it and prefer to talk purely of the boy in the lift then I shall leave you in peace sir. 🥂 😊

and i gave the reply too with respect and expanded on your question about the rationale of this scenario - but when you expand the question it makes it a little too generic - and there the point i am making about analog vs digital makes no sense - for example: a great dish may last only for 12 hours and rot after that but that doesnt mean its junk - its the nature of perishable vs non perishables - so i was also just clarifying that the context here is purely watches and I cant comment on a generic principle here about what is junk vs non junk - theres an old saying : one man's trash is another man's treasure - So its hard to be objective around that but since the subject at hand was a person explaining what is so romantic and magical about good old watches vs the everchanging tech soul-less gadgets and why they are not equals, i referred to that

Ok, I will create another thread for it some time if it's too much discussion for us to manage here 🍻

yeah that would be an interesting subject - how do we define value? what is an objective way to decide what is valuable vs junk when it comes to have a certain measurable indicator

I've said it many times but, value has little if anything to do with cost.

My daughter has a teddy bear, I bought it the day she was born. He's now over 30 years old and is more patches and repairs than actual, original teddy bear. We actually nicknamed him "Thread-bear".

To anyone else he would be worthless junk, but to my daughter his value is beyond measure.

I'm not sure there is any tangible measure for value as much of it is based on emotion and sentiment.
