New to the hobby, no interest in Rolex

hey Everyone, new to this forum.

I’ve been collecting for the last four months. Have got a Sinn 104, Hamilton Khaki Auto, Christopher Ward c65, vintage Omega Polaris, and an oddball pick Carl F Bucherer Adamavi (which I actually love even though there’s little brand equity).

I have zero interest in Rolex right now and dont aspire for one. Thought it might be interesting through the lens of a newcomer to the hobby. Here’s why i dont want one:

  • cost of upkeep is more than I want to think about.
  • i dont really have a desire to flex or show off with watches. and it seems that many Rolex owners are getting a lot of their value out of that aspect of it.
  • I lead a non profit. Brand recognition actually works against me. I dont want to sit with a potential funder and show a Rolex while im asking for money for our org.
  • the prices compared to other brands i‘m aspiring to collect are just not good.

Who knows? Over time I might catch the hype bug. But as of right now, I am happy i just gloss over any and all mention of Rolex.

I know that you are new to the forum and all, your bio says that you joined on 1/18/2057, but we eliminated the loyalty oath to Rolex in 2035 after the Great Seiko Rebellion.

I’m hoping to pick up a Grand Seiko quartz myself. I love their design aesthetic.

Grand Seiko is an easy bug to get bit with. Incredible watches!

You don't have to like rolex (or dislike) to be here, so welcome. You've got some nice n interesting watches in your collection, so go on give us a picture or two(save me googling them) 😉 enjoy yourself with us watch nutters.

Welcome and Enjoy! Looks like you have some great watches in the collection. I get your point on Rolex. I think Rolex makes great pieces (I am not a true fan boy I don't love them all - select few) I think Social Media has created the monster around Rolex. Rolex is actually a private charity now. Optics in non-profit work is important & Rolex might not play well even being a charity. There are so many awesome watches outside of the Coronet that we have lots to share! Look forward to seeing more posts

Give it time, you will start to appreciate brands you would not have previously considered.

Welcome, welcome. so many great brands to explore.....if you like Hamilton, you'll probably like Farer for instance. I love Rolex as well, but equally love my $31 Casio. It's an illness. Embrace it 😀

I remember the Great Seiko Rebellion. There were all those rumors about Orient working as a subversive agent for Rolex. Do you know if there was any truth to the rumors?

I heard of war and rumors of war, but I was not troubled. However, I thought that it was weird that the Bambino version 19 had a fluted bezel.

That was a bit strange, but not as telling as the Mako XV, also known as the Mercedes Mako...the Mersubby!

This poor person just wanted to say hello and say a little something about Rolex and accidentally landed in Dad Joke Central.  Definitely not a WUS vibe.

You know them WUSsies aren't welcome 'round these here parts! 🤣

Hello man from future! LOL. How‘s the watch world in 2057? Is Seiko still doing their misaligned indices? LOL

Just kidding. Welcome to crunchy town! We can all dream about having a Rolex. I admire the Explorer 39mm. Don’t think I’ll afford it anything soon. Maybe in 2057? 🍻

Enjoy your stay here! Have fun!

Thanks everyone! Seems pretty cool here.

I also havent managed to get any Seiko either. I neglected to mention that I have some g shocks whichis what brought me into the hobby.

·

I don't like the modern designs of Rolex, nor their cult-persona they've been trying to cultivate. Not that I could afford one or even bother with the ridiculous waiting periods. A vintage Oyster in a funky dial colour would be something I'd like to pick up one day though, I really like the appearance of the classic Oysters and Explorers - vintage, yet they have aged very well and could pass off as a modern design unless you look closely.

How dare you speak ill of our gilded horologic god?!  Crunch status, retracted!

Back to the future with you!  BTW, how is 2057?   Road Warrior 1 was pretty spot on?

The Movie Villain Hall of Fame: Wez | Cult Spark

Not liking Rolex is not a faux pas.  I think in years past they earned respect with incredible quality.  But now are sadly more a symbol of flex culture and showing one's status.  I think white gold tool watches are hilarious.  And this from someone whose dad wore a Rolex Explorer for 50 years.

Well first off, Welcome to The Crunch!

Gshocks are GODTIER. I think 50% of the time a gshock is on my wrist.

Yay, you said coronet and not crown!

😂

You're not alone. Rolexes leave me cold, and there are so many far more interesting watches out there.

I've never held a Hamilton Ventura, or an Accutron - if you put either of those on a table in front of me (or any of the watches you listed in your collection) alongside a Rolex, I wouldn't give the Rolex a second glance.
