Watches in the Wild (Halloween Hijinks, Volume 51)

Disclaimer: Nodus Sector Deep Orthodox. Love that blue black gradient dial. Hope springeth eternal.

This is the fifty first in a semi-regular digest of cool watches I happened to see this week.

Past posts in this series have been hashtagged to #watchesinthewild

As always, my general policy is that I never ask for wrist shots (because approaching strangers and distant acquaintances to talk about watches is already weird enough) so all pictures below are sourced from the internet. People are mostly cool, I try not to annoy them.

---

Being a peace loving sort, I tend to solely catalog the pleasant watch encounters  I have in my expeditions into the iving of watches.  This, to be fair, is virtually all of my experiences.  Watch nerds, by and large, are a welcoming bunch and if you know the language of escapements, brands, and complications, then you're a card carrying member of the group.  No dues required even,  It's lovely.  You all are lovely.

But there's a segment of the watchdom venn diagram that over laps with wealth enthusiasm and douche baggery and that is the story of the Rolex Day Date 40 (Roman numerals) I have for you today.

Image

It goes without saying that I enjoy the Tony Soprano-ness of this watch but I have to say thst everyone I meet who is wearing this watch does have a bit of Soprano sociopathy to them. I'm sure that is a small sample size size thing (given that my father, definitely not a sociopath, owned one) but sometimes a feeling is a feeling.

Anyway, said Rolex Day-Date 40 was worn by a man in an Italian cut suit who cut in front of me at the coffee shop and ordered five caramel macchiatos which made me late for a meeting.

Incidentally, the meeting I was late to was with the firm where Day-Date guy was a junior sales team member where we were due to negotiate the terms of a potential research relationship.  The terms of the deal were bad,  Day-Date guy recognized me, and the senior sales manager was enraged when he realized that his coffee order was at the expense of a potential client.  The meeting was cut short and I ended up getting an hour back to myself on a Friday morning.

I swear....Rolex people. 🤣

Regardless of the price of the watch on your wrist, be good to your fellow man. Or you might see me kvetching about you here in this column. And who needs that?

At any rate, some fun Halloween spots from last week for you all. I hope you enjoy!

Seiko Cocktail Time SRPB41 "Blue Moon"

Image

Seen on the wrist of a prime brokerage relationship manager in my offices the other day.  I complimented it and he looked distantly surprised that I had a recognized it.  We chatted a bit about watches and he talked about a very solid collection of middle of the plate brands and watches (Seamasters, SKXs, Longines Conquests, etc.). Yet another finance guy who doesn't collect like a finance guy.  Maybe I should rethink my reflexive dismissal of bankers and their watch collections.

One of the things that I occasionally wonder about is how it came to be that aesthetics became less valued among watch enthusiasts than specifications, quality control, or heritage.  I get that aesthetics are are vastly harder to measure or argue factually about than whether or not a watch has sapphire crystal or aligned bezels but that prioritization does strike me as odd, particularly in an age of ubiquitous and hyper accurate pocket watches (that incidentally surf the internet and make phone calls).

To me, watches are fundamentally fashion items that tell the time.  This is why I love texturally interesting dials and architectural case design.  It's why I'm somewhat tepid on in house movements (unless those movements do something special) and rarely mind a well regulated Sellita or Seiko movement.  Part of my collection will always be reserved for maisons that have this sort of design forward mentality.

And chief among these is Seiko, which creates the most temptingly beautiful dials at virtually every price point they compete at.  There is no other watch company that does this as well as Seiko and there is no watch line that embodies this more completely than the Cocktail Time.

The Cocktail Time series is a ostensibly based on cocktails developed by the famous Star Bar in Tokyo but I find them appropriately named for an entirely different reason.

Whenever I dress up to go get a nice drink at a bar, I have a watch crisis.  There's a certain joy in dressing up in ones finery to enjoy an evening in the town.  But I have a deep dark secret, whenever I decide to wear a nice watch to a bar I invariably end up denting it. You might suggest that I over imbibe.  I would say that I don't require alcohol to be the clumsiest person in the world.

But Seiko offers the perfect solution, an affordable (in watch terms at least) dress watch with universally stunning dials.  I'd happily wear one of these to the toniest bar in San Francisco and feel fairly certain that someone would notice and compliment it.

And a dent, scratch or scuff need not provoke a crisis. If it doesn't end up coming out, you can always find another.

Cocktail Time, a watch for cocktail time.

Moonswatch Moon

Image

On the original strap.  Sigh.

I've largely made my peace with the Moonswatch, particularly the fun colored ones.  I mean if you're going to get a plastic watch, wear it loud and proud.  I myself would not say no to a Mars.

But the grey, metal evoking ones just make me feel a little sad....like the distant flash of recognition on catching a glimpse of an old flame and then realizing that it is actually their much homelier cousin.

Omega Speedmaster 57 reissue

Image

And a real speedy as a consolation prize.  Seen in the wrist of a dad picking up his daughter from gymnastics.  He had Air pods in and I still don't know the etiquette of interrupting people with headphones on.  Like, don't most people put earphones in to signal that they don't want to talk to anyone? But does that hold in and age of transparency mode?  I let the moment pass.

The Speedmaster is the copy paste family of watchdom.  There are too many models that look entirely too similar to each other.  This is a bit of a sad state of affairs for such an iconic watch.

But if you made me choose one of the bog standard Speedy's (ex interesting colors and cases), this one be the one. Fabulous size, incredible movement, steel bezel,  and the best hands of the Speedmaster family.  Forget the white matchsticks and give into the cult of the broad arrow.

To me, these hands are Speedmaster primordial, the way that the watch always ought to have been.  And if you don't like the basic color way, Omega does it in beautiful green, red and blue jewel tones.

This is one of the very few Omegas that move me.

Cartier Roadster Two Tone (32mm)

Image

Worn military style by an Grandma at her grand daughter's Halloween parade.  I never got around to asking her about it, but it was a very cool look amplified by the fact that the Roadster three part bracelet is absolutely beautiful enough to be a jewelry style bracelet on its own.

Being a lover of two tone and the decade plus owner of a Roadster Chronograph, it should come as no surprise that I love this watch.

Red G-Shock square "Coca Cola"

Image

Worn on the wrist of a man in a giant Coke can costume.  I told him that I was genuinely surprised that he managed to find such a fitting watch to match the costume.  He laughed and said that he was wavering between the coke G-shock and a red Michael Schumacher but his wife was giving him the death glare to get the kids trick or treating already.

You and me both brother.

Stowa Antea 390

Image

And some Bauhaus to end the day.  Seen in the wrist of a man handing out chocolate bars to trick or treaters.  I would have asked about this watch but my kids were already halfway down the street before I could talk about it.

I know nothing about the Stowa Antea (aside from how it looks like) but I do have a funny story about the brand to relate.

I once talked to a Stowa representative at a watch fair and he, in his lovely Germanic way, was genuinely puzzled why everyone was so excited about Hamilton's and Omega's history supplying the USAAF and RAF respectively.

"We have World War 2 aviation history too!"

Image

I frankly had no idea how to respond to that comment.

What cool watches did you see this week?

OMG!!! Wait... the douchy junior guy cost their firm the deal? Or, rather, it just exacerbated things, given that the terms were bad to begin with?

The terms were bad to begin with but I couldn't tell if it was just an opening position that they intended to move off of. But the Day Date was going to be the account manager and that was just a non starter.

I have learned over the years that I can work around most product and pricing shortcomings. But jerks just make my life too hard.

My wife came back from her usual Saturday grocery shopping trip hungry and in a bit of a temper, she neglected my advice to at least grab a banana for a fast snack. We decided to visit Tony for a bowl of Vietnamese pho in our our area, I always like to connect with the second generation restaurant owner who wears a lovely Rolex Datejust with a white gold bezel and oyster bracelet. He likes to check out my Saturday watch choices, thinking my wife is clueless to the expense of my adult toys. The man suspects the Mrs controls the family budget since it is always her credit card that pays the bill. Lol. Unfortunately the small diner was slammed so we walked a few extra minutes to a larger less intimate eatery where the original owners along with their adult son were all working that day. I have been an occasional customer for decades there, the owners were once younger arrivals to Canada, originally Vietnamese Boat people who were in a Hong Kong refugee camp before making their way to Toronto in the late 70s working grunt jobs before renting a hovel to start an authentic Vietnamese restaurant. As a first generation immigrant myself I have always admired their work ethic and success that they earned through industry and good timing. I never noticed before but the couple were both wearing gold Rolex watches, he speaks halting English but was affable seating hungry customers to tables, the gold Rolex Day/Date did not seem ostentatious or inappropriate on his wrist. The wife was more arrogant, now comfortable with the family’s financial success, she wore her gold Rolex like a badge or reward for the hard times suffered during the past. Their adult son is not into watches prefers a Harley and at least two high end sports cars that he drives somewhat recklessly. My wife notes that theirs has always been a cash only diner. While we were waiting for our lunch I noticed a non Asian customer walking his crying child outside for whatever reasons, he was oddly wearing a Cartier Roadster Chrono which was a production watch many years in the past already.

Most recently while hosting my sis, a niece and her husband visiting from Montreal for a dim sum lunch, some shopping afterwards, met a sales agent at a well known Toronto electronics store who was wearing an 80s Rolex Datejust in mint condition, watch just returned from a full service from Rolex Canada, turns out he is an avid watch guy, noticed that I was checking out a Panasonic Technics turntable minus appropriate cartridge on sale for $5199 marked down from 6k. I said that I had abandoned high end audio a long time ago but was always into watches which at least do not weigh the same as tube amps and electrostatic speaker systems. We chatted, exchanged calling cards, we intend to meet up one free day to chat about watches.

Excellent spots and even better stories. One of the great annoyances of my life is that I don't currently have the time to develop some of these more incidental watch spotting conversations with people (who are certainly into watches) into broader relationships.

I really do love the day date. It has a glam-ness that modern rolex with its stern luxury tool focus seems to be less willing to embrace these days. And there's definitely a sort of person who can pull off a full gold day date brilliantly. My father, a Chinese American physician, wore a diamond dial one for many years and it suited him.

I still have that watch and wonder if there's a day when I will simply age into it. We will see.

Be good, do good, pay it forward. I gotta say you're as genuine and down to earth in person as you are in these posts. It was great to see your brain in action identifying WITW. It really takes a lot of practice, passion, and a deep knowledge of watches.

That Nodus is a great piece but to be fair, I was more enamored by the other 2 watches yesterday. It's cool that every watch you own has a story and is hard-earned. What can I say, I'm distracted by shiny objects. 😂

Appreciate you connecting me to @Mr.Dee.Bater. Looking forward to our next nerd get together

·

Just came to say, your last bit made me giggle a bit 🤏🏻.

Also on the Nodus front, and in particular the Sector Deep, been very, very, very impressed.

Legible, well designed, takes cues off the Pelagos, Sinn, and others but does it's own thing (especially the larger than case bezel), and I was frankly surprised at the level of regulation and finishing that is apparently stock from Nodus.

Lol, I'm just a over caffeinated crazy man with an eye for time pieces.

But I do by and large enjoy the company of watch nerds and my only regret is not being able to do it more!

The Sector Deep is a brilliant example of how important design is to a watch being pleasurable.

There's some Pelagos with the cut out rehaut and stark white markers

There some sinn with the bead blasted case.

But it somehow manages to be evocative without being derivative. I think it probably comes down to a couple of things.

  1. How slim the midcase is (versus the slabbier sides of Tudors and Sinns)

  2. The hand set, which feels pure Seiko

  3. The dual printed bezel which feels like the most useful innovation on the rotating bezel that I have ever seen.

The Nodus guys absolutely nailed it.

I’m with you on the caffeine. Unlimited coffee, Red Bull, and Monster is probably not healthy in the long run. Speaking from personal experience 🤣

There’s a nerd get together in Livermore this weekend. But we’ll get together more in the future🤙🏻

Loving all the love Nodus has been getting by this community lately. Looks like I have to add another to the collection soon! Seriously, f that Day-Date guy. Right move on your part, bad deal or not.

Good pull with the Stowa, I am not sure I have ever seen on in the wild.

Ugh, I too won’t hate on the Mars. On a red rubber strap, would like at home in my bargain box.

Wear it with pride and joy! I wish that I had one dollar for every fella from the Middle Kingdom wearing a totally outrageous watch. It is part of our DNA! I wrestle every day with buying something totally crazy but I rationalize that the sellers are the main benificiaries of our moments of madness! Take good care! Best,

And they even did the scalloping on the bottom/mid case across from the middle of the spring bars.

I really wish more sports/tool watche makers did this. Makes it not only wear/ride better in thicker nylon, but makes it infinitely easier to thread single passes through without removing springbars.

Might be a niche, strap enthusiast issue, but makes my life easier for sure since I routinely travel with one/two watch heads and a ton of single passes.

TBH, I just regret not picking one up sooner...

I'd easily consider them top 5/6 out of all the micros I have.

Looking forward to their collab with Raven.

Being a buy sider as long as I have, I have dealt with a lot of questionable personalities. And I have never regretted following my gut in deciding to not work with someone who I didn't feel was going to be a decent person. It was pretty much that simple.

The Stowa was a unicorn, especially a Bauhaus Stowa. I feel like that was an enthusiast conversation waiting to happen. Alas.

Hah!

I can't imagine parting with it but I still occasionally struggle with the wearing.

I have a bit of a baby face so I end up looking like a somewhat doughy Triad member. 😉

I do occasionally wonder about the cultural aspects of watch collecting. I know a LOT of Chinese by heritage collectors.

Gut/intuition/subconscious clues/hunches/experience/"feeling", irreplaceable IMO. Older I get the more I realize, "experience" is learning to heed or listen to your senses.

Called a lot of things in various career fields, but usually wise to at least heed the feelings.

Even in my career field. Not saying let those feeling rule, but keying in on why you are having a hunch/gut feeling can allow you to realize you subconsciously picked up on a bad thing, that only now is staring you in the face. 👌🏻

Great stories my friend!

Love the bit of divine comedy with gold Rolex Backpfeifengesicht dude. I thought such things only happen in movies.

My lived experience is that the rude guy who budges then jumps in a GT3 with a hot girl and then peels out. 🫤. In YVR the uber rich don’t have jobs that can bite them for antisocial behaviour 🙄

And, Funny enough - I tried on a gold day date recently!

Well… I would rock it for a Halloween costume, but it felt too much like I’d be giving the finger to everyone around me if worn as a GADA. My issue, not the watches’

Image

But I have a deep dark secret, whenever I decide to wear a nice watch to a bar I invariably end up denting it.

Dude, I’m way more clumsy than you and can smash into stuff when sober and wide awake. I move fast and furtive and am often surrounded by sharp edged stainless steel. I’m totally getting a star bar, can’t believe I don’t own one yet (been close many times)

My recent sightings were

  1. 1000s of grand seikos, as detailed in my recent posts.

  2. A MAD1 red, on wrist of guy at the MB&F store Rodeo Drive. A super fun and instantly recognizable watch. Go in and talk with Jeffry if you are in the neighborhood, he’s super chatty and very friendly

  3. A standard Omega Speedmaster - at the GS9 event! I had to compliment his watch and his bravery for wearing it in the lion’s den.

He was a bit embarrassed but was attending as a +1 and assured me that’d he’d officially join the GS cult soon. So I didn’t have to turn him in 😜

BTW Thought anymore about trying a Marinemaster or LX?😃

I was amused! And he was junior....like junior enough that I was wondering how he managed to afford a modern Day Date because those things are like 30-40k usd used.

I like Day dates, particularly the older vintages with less aggressive lugs. I have often considered getting a platinum or white gold one as a counterpart to the glammed out gold diamond dial that my father rocked, but somehow it stays in the realm of "I'd like to do something else with the money."

FWIW, it looks great on you and the sizing should be basically perfect. You could rock it.

I am soooooooo jealous of your LA expedition to the heart of Grand Seiko nerd dom. That would have been a watch spotter's dream journey.

I also love that you saw a speedy there! I don't know that I would have been that bold.

As for the Prospex LX....I'll get around to it some day. I feel like I need to drink too much and bid on eBay for one.

Being an elder millennial (with a baby face and no grey hair), I feel the incongruity. I figure it will feel less like a weird look some day but not yet.

I’m super late to this with 2 sick kids over a busy weekend of work. I still need to notch time out for a column of my awkward and infuriating interactions with watch normies from gold Rolex to Breitling Avengers. Your interaction sounds very familiar and actually funny when it’s not happening to me.

Agree with the new ‘57 impression. I’m not a huge Space guy or an Omega aficionado but these are definitely my favorite of late.

Sick kids are no bueno. We are just emerging from our crazy little sick family cocoon and I do not want to repeat the experience. Hopefully you guys don't have anything too serious and are on the upswing.

In retrospect, I was maybe 10% annoyed at the Day Date conversation and 90% amused. It was very silly.

I think I have a tough time with Omega stylistically. For whatever reason, they don't hit. The last Omega I truly had a hankering for was a Globemaster Annual Calendar in rose gold. You can imagine how popular they actually were with the broader watch community.

As I was paying my bill at Chinatown restaurant last weekend, I spotted Lorier Neptune on a NATO.
