Repairing/Restoring vintage Omegas

Dear Crunchers,

I recently decided to repair/restore my Father's vintage Omega 168.047, a watch he received as a gift from my grandfather when he turned 18–or upon high-school graduation...he's not sure.

I sent this in to Omega via Bucherer for a quote and was shocked when I was informed they want €2.700€ to repair/restore the watch. It was particularly annoying to learn that they wanted €1700 to refurbish the dial, although I specifically stated I do not want them to touch the dial or replace the hands.

Needless to say I asked them to retun the watch. Especially considering I can buy this very model online, serviced for under €1k.

Do you guys have a trusted watchmaker that is proficient in repairing/restoring vintage Omegas? I'd prefer if they're in the EU.

Based on what I've read online the work should cost around €1000-€1200.

Looking forward to your answers.

Thank you 🙏

No recommendations but wanted to say that’s a great looking watch. Looks like all you need is a service, I’d avoid using the term “restoration” that might be why they’re quoting for a new dial.

·

Sorry I can’t help with a recommendation but that’s a lovely watch a great story to go with it and I hope you get it done and enjoy it

·

Have you tried discussing the quote with Omega and insisting that you only want a movement service and no work done on the dial and hands? It's your watch, you should be able to decide which operations you want done.

Love that watch!

I had a similar experience with Omega with my PO recently. Bottom line was do it our way or we do nothing and send it back without any work done. Sad but true. I shipped it thru a boutique to Miami. Maybe different in other countries and states. Beautiful watch. Hope it works out for you.

This watch needs no external work, just service and probably that is nothing serious. Is the watch running normally or not? If no movement parts are needed any decent watchmaker should service this for couple 100€. These movements are quite mass produced. One of my favourite Constallation designs ever but don't like 1000 series movements inside

Maybe ask around on german watch group ?

In picture your watch look fine 👌

Thats beautiful. Will certainly get a similar Omega myself 😍

Recently got an Omega Mariner 1 (their first mass produced Quartz) with dead movement.

Ive sent it to WinskisofKinross in Scotland, who specialise in putting modern quartz movements in defunct old automatics to make them everyday watches.

Im not a purist so not fussed about authenticity & it'll look the same cosmetically -I'm waiting to get it back . I'll do a long post when it arrives.

Estimated cost around £200...

🤯 Never thought of that but that's actually a pretty decent idea.

Especially for dead vintage watches if you can put in a meca-quartz movement that can mimic the smooth sweep of mechanical watches I personally think it'll be very cool.

·

Now that is my type of vintage Omega, seriously cool for someone of my advancing years.

Really nice watch 👍

Try YouTube they a lot watch makers across the world, nice watch, maybe just a service looks in good shape externally

We have a good one for #vintage #omega in Helsinki. But you're in Berlin? You should have good local ones too 🤔
