Longines Legend Diver 39mm

Hello fellow Crunchers,

today I tried on the new Longines Legend Diver in 39mm at the AD.

I'm a sucker for vintage-inspired divers and this is my favorite model at the moment. It's so unique and quirky. It's definitely on my wishlist and will be one of my next purchases.

But something is still holding me back. I cannot help but feel that the initial launch of this slimmed-down compressor-type diver is just an introduction and that there's more to come.

I would love, for instance, to see this in dark green. And perhaps there's another, smaller size in the pipeline?

The watch wears beautifully, fairly flush on the wrist, and, as you can see, it doesn't look much bigger than my BB54.

But at 37mm, with 1mm shaved off its thickness this timepiece would be pure perfection.

What do you guys reckon, will the 39mm replace both the 42mm and 36mm or is this just the beginning and we can expect a smaller version of this beautiful diver?

Let's speculate!

Cheers

I think 39 is the sweet spot. They will stick with this size and maybe diversify on dials.

·

Very likely that this is indeed an introduction, expect to see different color dials and different materials for this model. However, I don't think you can go wrong with the black dial! This is also on my wish list!

·

It has gone down very well. There will definitely be more variants released, green would probably be a prime candidate. Longines have a track record of maintaining different sizes in their range also.

·

I tested the blue version of the Longines. Sizewise it’s spot on for me. With the black with no faux patina I say they nailed it.

·

Yes very beautiful watch indeed. I always prefer black dials and this one is fantastic.

·

They did bring out a lot of versions for the bigger LLD, can imagine they'll do the same for this one.

Understand why you might want to hope back for now. Though this version does look very good on your wrist.

·

That would look amazing on a nice strap.

I mean, you name it: nato, tropic or leather. This would look amazing on any strap 😍

Here's to hoping. But this is already a beautiful watch. So even if they do not release a smaller size, I'd be happy to buy this next year.

Love mine!

The Legend Diver line has got 36, 39 and 42 now, I do think there is no other size in the pipeline. As far as dial colours are instead concerned, of course they will come out soon or later. And perhaps there might be different materials that will constitute this proposal from Logines, like bronze and maybe something more daring.

42mm is fine for my gargantuan wrists, the smaller case trend is upsetting my buying practices hugely 😂😂😂😂

·

Why would they do a 37mm if they already did 36?..

·

Looks great. I'm captivated by this watch as well. I will try to go see it soon, can't wait. I'm going to wait and see what else comes out and possibly get it second hand as prices should be lower over time as grey market stock increases.

·

I’d love a 38 or 37

That’s a valid question. The way I see it, is that the 39mm will replace the 42mm. So following that line of thinking a potential no date, COSC 37mm would replace the current 36mm with date. There’s nothing to suggest they‘ll go ahead with this, but the reason I‘m proposing it is based on the COSC certification. Once watches within a certain line start becoming COSC certified, I wonder if it still make sense, for a brand that is trying to move upmarket, to offer non-COSC, cheaper versions of the same watch. It’s a question of positioning. The consequence of this would be that they will discontinue the current 36mm and 42mm. Again I have no information whatsoever that would corroborate this thinking, but am just speculating 🤔

Your speculation appears way off given Longines history. They are known to have a case size for every wrist. Look at how many sizes they offer for the Conquest. The 36, 39 and 42mm range is exactly what I would expect Longines to maintain for at least another decade.

I just wish that they released the 39mm sooner or I would have bought it the day they released it. As it is, I am very unlikely to buy one.

You might be right, as I said, I‘m merely speculating. But I can’t help but feel that the 39mm, compared to the 42mm and 36mm, feels like a different watch (integrated bracelet, upgraded COSC movement). It might be, as you say, that they’ll keep the three different sizes, but in that case I‘d expect Longines to, at least, upgrade the movement in the 42mm and 36mm.

Would it be easier for them to just reuse the 36mm cases for the COSC version?

I mean, 36-37 transition sounds bit odd, when you have already established design. With small items like watches 1mm can really make or break the proportions and I don’t think it also makes sense from a marketing perspective tbf. 36 is “classic” size, and if you are trying to upscale and remove the non COSC version you still don’t want to lose a customers who were on a fence of getting a 36 and if you keep the 36 and add some new colors with a COSC you might sell those people a bigger piece. 37mm watches are also guilty of odd lug widths, so you need to make new accessories just for one new model, while discontinuing previous straps and bracelets.

You do have a point here. Going from 36 to 37, when there’s already an established design that works might not make much sense. The reason I proposed this chance is because the 36mm version of the Legend Diver has always felt a bit too small to me.

·

Wow that the nicest Longine diver that I ever seen. I rather have that one instead of the Tuder.

·

Longines hits another one with a good case size. 39-40 works well for me.
